I'm so confused, and i'm just looking for a quick answer (sorry if this is the wrong place to post this) Blizzard Dota is made by Valve Correct? Who is behind Dota 2? I heard there were issues between Blizzard and Valve, but I seen them sponsoring it in an ad on their site. Can anyone quickly fill me in here? :P |

From what I know; Dota was a mod for WC3 created by the community. Valve does what valve has always done and hired said community to create Dota2, which is not associated with the original Dota in any way other than developers and name. That is why Blizzard is suing Valve. At least I think it is something like that |

Well i understand where DOTA came from (long time warcraft fan ;p) I thought the lawsuit was over Valve using "Blizzard" in their game name "blizzard dota" |

DOTA 2 is made by Valve. Blizzard DOTA is made by Blizzard. DOTA was a mod of WC3. Upon seeing it's success and the fact that there is an entire genre just waiting to be captilized upon, the modders (there were 3 different groups who eventually worked on it, and some strife between who actually "made" DOTA. Originally there were like 20 different DOTA mods, and I even made one myself) went to work on different games. Those who wanted to create something new went to LoL. Those who wanted to stay true to their initial game signed with Valve to make DOTA 2. I think litigation involves Blizzard owning WC3 and by proxy any IP that are created as part of the modding community (essentially they are claiming they own DOTA title since the game was made on WC3), though I could be wrong. |

Originally posted by Xiro Hmmm, I'm playing Dota2 and I haven't noticed anything mentioned of Blizzard anywhere; including the name, it' just DOTA2. I could be wrong, Never played the original so what I'm saying is based completely off of things I have read. |

you can read the history of dota if u like. here the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AnQfdSEqGDA its a 3 part video. VALVE trying to trademark the name DOTA. BLIZZArd is counter suing because they claim that DOTA is a trademark for the community. and because they wouldn't be able to use the name DOTA for there own BENEFIT of selling there game. |

the lawsuit is just about the name 'dota'. after the people at valve announced the development of dota 2, blizzard decided (after 7 years) to create their own dota (blizzard dota) and release it as a mod in the upcomming starcraft 2 expansion (heart of the swarm). they also filed a lawsuit against valve (in november 2011). valve was trying to trademark the term dota. if valve wins, they will be the only one able to use the name dota. if blizzard wins, the name 'dota' will remain as it is right now.
you could have used google for that :/ |
