I don't know. If you are looking for a "World of Warcraft" type game. I don't think either of these games fit the bill. You're more likely to enjoy Guild Wars 2 although the GW2 community is going pummel me for using WoW in the same breath as Guild Wars 2 but I do think it has more in common with WoW than either Tera or The Secret World. Although, if you're really looking for a WoW type game, you're probably gonna wanna play RIFT. |

depends on what you want, I have played both and TSW is very unfinished and will not be ready for its release date in June, also the questing and flow of the game is not fluid at all.. you end up being jolted many times in a bad way as in.. wait wtf does this mean? why was I sent here? why did that quest update? do I really have to drop this quest to pick up this one I found while doing another? Also there are very little choices you can make other than which quest to do and you can only do max 3 at a time but this is usually only 2. Whats funny is there is a lot of talk about choices while you follow the trail to your quest objectives without knowing why. Tera on the other hand looks AMAZING but it is a Korean grinder and if you like those games you will be happy. However... the animation stops are a major pain in the butt and were a deal breaker for me. Example the mystic has a long range teleport forward.. nice huh for a clothy? Yea... no because after you teleport the camera has to catch up to you before you can move and it takes almost as long as running there.. so now the player or mob you were avoiding just caught you anyways.. pretty much its only useful if the other player is stuck in their own animation, unable to control their toon. There is no cancel attack button. A third game in the mix which I have also played is Guild Wars 2. In MY opinion it is a much better game and there is too much to point out here if you do not know it. If you do then decide whether it is for you or not. I had a ton of fun playing it and cannot wait to get a hold of it again. Here is a thread in case you aren't familiar with GW2. http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/337506/page/1
Good luck in your decision and I hope you like whichever you decide on.

TSW is set in our world and uses our lore to make up its story. The get rid of lvling in the traditional sense which is great. They unfortunately should have used the wow questing model over their own because it has HUGE flaws, but they did try here. GW2 semi action based combat with dodging. They has completely redone their questing system and its sorta like Rifts done real well and all over. They have done away with traditional endgame and gearing and made improvements to things like crafting.

Looking at your posts you seem to doom games for very little faults and if you actually enjoyed GW2 _that much_ you must be casual oriented gamer. One thing worth mentioning is that GW2 doesn't have an endgame, there's no character progression once you hit the max level 80. You will only get gear that's slightly different statswise although having the same power tier as "quest" rewards around 80. Tera does have an endgame revolving around multiple tier dungeons and PvP (PvE/PvP gear treadmill) and they've also introduced some sort of endgame "raid" content in the latest korean versions. There's also enchanting gear which takes a lot of gold to manage so getting the gear to drop and successfully upgrading it to +12 will take awhile ;J TSW does have 525 skills to unlock (will take a long time), Tiered 5-man dungeons (Funcom is the king of 5-mans), 10-man raids, PvP warzones (FvFvF zones) + "battlegrounds" and a story that expands in every content patch. Basically unlocking the skills / gear treadmill / more story is what to expect. GW2 is something you enjoy a lot while levelling up but you hit a brick wall at 80. From there you can either do dungeons for cosmetic gear, do WvWvW for cosmetic gear or go Structured PvP that is balanced and completely unaffected by gear/Cash Shop. If you enjoy endgame in mmorpgs don't choose GW2 in any situation. Tera & TSW both have a long endgame and will keep you playing for a looong time much like WoW.
IMHO, In the end it boils down to: Endgame: Tera&TSW > GW2 Traditional combat: TSW > Tera > GW2 Action combat: GW2&Tera > TSW Graphics: Tera > GW2&TSW (Style preferance ofc) Polish: Tera > GW2 > TSW (GW2 shows better polish than TSW and Tera has already been out in KR) PvP: GW2 > Tera&TSW (Tera/TSW might have "fun" PvP but the balance is in Structured PvP for GW2) Developer/Publisher: GW2&Tera > TSW Questing: GW2 > Tera&TSW (Events are far more interesting/fun than anything shown on Tera/TSW at the moment) Animations: GW2&Tera > TSW Story: TSW > GW2 > Tera Casual friendly: GW2 > TSW > Tera ( This is just prejudice, Korean game with grind, I doubt it's casual friendly in the end) Hardcore: Tera > TSW > GW2 (Obvious) Price: Tera&GW2 > TSW (( Tera has monthly, but cheaper box and no CS. Also the option to buy game time with ingame gold makes it cheaper if you are HC. GW2 is cheaper if you plan not to use the CS and you are casual, thus not having time to farm gold in Tera.)) This list could go on and on and on and on... But the point here is that ALL of these games have GOOD qualities. It depends on which are your priority. |

You can't compare promises to a game. At the moment TSW is only promises of a game, but people haven't had enough chances to play to really know about the game itself. TERA has had multiple beta weekends so it's already possible to evaluate it as a game. Do you want to buy Funcom's promises or TERA? |

Try before you buy, it's that simple. If GW2 doesn't have an open beta as GW1 did, i will be reluctant to buy it, regardless of the ridiculous amount of footage I've seen of it. This game has very little footage, no open beta (yet.. we'll see) and offers a lifetime sub as if it were expecting an early doom.

This is my personal opinion, i tried tera and i never got into it as it just bored me to death, but why do people say bad things about funcom, im sure thay done 2 good mmo's anarchy and age of conan and both going strong today plus funcom have a acount system where you can play free and only have so much you can do and pay where everything is unlocked. |

I think TSW is a game for you if you want to get involved in the story and use your brain while doing quests. TSW to me is a bit of adventure game/mmorpg crossover. The character development system is also quite different from what you are used to. All 500+ skills available to any character and you get to compose your own from 7active+7passive. Different compositions will be good in different situations and you can change between them whenever out of combat. You can also save your favourite ones together with the gear that fits the composition. TSW is a Funcom game which atleast earlier has ment that its going to be moderatly hard. In addition the quite flat power curve of the vertical progression which means that after reaching the top of the vertical power curve you can expand your character horizontally with lots of content still at a good difficulty. TSW looks to have some of the best dungeons in the game and if you get tired of your current role or if the party you are in is missing on tanking, healing or dps, you aren't stuck. You can just change things around. A very good read is this article: http://www.pcgamer.com/previews/secret-world-dungeons/ From the conclusion of the article above: Closing notes I would not buy TSW if I was into twitch combat, it's not that kind of game. If you hate puzzles or want a game that is easy and straight forward, I would skip it as well. No idea what the OP is since WoW originally was pretty hardcore, while lately it seems it's more of a easy mode casual game your grandmother could pick up and enjoy... |

I'll be taking the wait and see a few months out approach with The Secret World and Tera. TSW has me a bit worried with the lifetime subscription from the start. When I see lifetime subscription, I see "we don't think this game is worth paying for on a monthly basis for years to come". Sounds a bit silly and probably is, but it makes me a bit wary of it. Tera seems too anime for me but I'll be waiting a few months to see how it goes. I've been burnt by so many mmo's the past few years that didn't pan out to be any good, I don't want to waste my time or money on them if it's not a solid product. I'm not as forgiving with mmo companies as I once was. You have one chance to grab me and keep me, after the first month you have to work to keep me. It amazes me that people these days are fine with mediocrity when a game that's been in development for over 5 years comes out and doesn't even have basic features expected in today's mmo's. I think that's part of the problem we have with mmo's. The customers are too much fanobois they don't hold the companies accountable for the slop they keep producing, and why should they produce better when the fanbois will pay for mediocrity and lap it up like pigs.

Just my own opinion and not knocking the game or people that want to play it but Tera was not worth the time or effort to pay a subscription. I thought when I first read about it I thought it would be great but when I got into beta it lost my interest all together the game mechanics just did not do it for me I tried to go more along the lines of the story and that did not do it for me either. It may have great potential higher in the game but if it lost my attention the first 30 lvls I would never make it. As for Secret World I have yet to make any choice in the matter since it has been delayed and only can either read the newsletter sent to me on the game progress maybe one of these days in an open beta I can acutally comment on it or when more game articles from other places become readily available. Other then that the only game I guess I will be playing is GW2. |

TERA without a doubt is the game for you, its smooth, good combat. Tsw is bulky slow combat and does not appear to be a smooth game, doesnt matter what anyone else sais, tera is the game for you. Has immersion smoothness and everything your looking for. I have seen alot of gameplay videos of tsw and can already tell it will be an average game at best, but i have played TERA closed beta and can tell you that its one hell of a game, and most likely mmo of the year. So yeah without a doubt the game for you is Tera its released soon anyway so enjoy :) |

Can you please give me some links that backs up your claims that TSW is not or will not be ready for launch, all testings and videos claim othervise My suggestion to this is.. They are VERY diffrent games, almost diffrent genres..Both are MMO's thou.. Whike Tera is focusing on "a sort of action combat" and a rather picturesque world and maybe not so big focus on quests and story. It's a traditional and manga inspired fantasy fair..For a game that uses it's action combat system as a main sell, I can't see this a "super succesful" as it was rather slow and dull, atleast in the beginning. Some say it get's better post lvl 20 thou..I'd say this is the MMO for the player who does not bother if the quests are poor but the action is good. The Secret World is an attempt to make a MMO with inspiration from HP Lovecraft and King and is set in an alternate "our world", with much focus on story. You can only have a very limited set of quests so that you wont loose focus on the things at hand. It also has a rather unique way with their skill wheel and that you don't "level" your characthers, you unlock skills in the wheel instead and can úse difrent builds for diffrent things all the time.. I'd say this is the MMO for the story hungry supernatural fans, that likes some action but also loves a great puzzle now and then and doesn't bother if a game has an instance or not.

Originally posted by thark Well, I don't have much to go on. Admittedly, much of it is on gut feel, past experience/track record of Funcom, and a few posts such as this one here from the recent PAX that makes me wonder. http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/346230/So-I-got-to-try-The-Secret-World-at-PAX.html If the game was really ready for launch, it should be following a traditional ramp up cycle and we should see more activity around an annouced open beta. (including plans to drop the NDA and a couple of press releases) Now I just double checked, and found this on the offical TSW web site "Open beta will not be initiated before Christmas, but will be a part of our strategy next year prior to our June 2012 launch." http://www.thesecretworld.com/news/the_secret_world_open_beta_clarification Did I go to the wrong place, because it seems odd that this web page is so outdated, with neither an announced open beta yet nor did they bother to update the page with the latest pre-order information. (Yeah yeah, I know, they are too busy "polishing" TSW to waste any resources updating the web site, where have I heard that before?) But assuming they are having an open beta they're going to have to get cracking. When AOC launched there was a clear open beta period and I was part of it. So again, call it just a hunch, a lack of really solid information about the title in many areas, we know way more about GW2 than TSW at this point, GW2 is already going into open beta, and they don't even appear to be targeting a June release date. But somehow Funcom is going to pull it off when ANET isn't going to try and appears to be way ahead of schedule and revealed much more of their title at the same point in time. Let's turn it around on you and ask why you believe they are on track for a June release, I'd be interested in hearing.

Imo im getting TERA, EA is worst for a reason, theyve failed every game ive ever played besides the old james bond series for consoles and BF3, they suck. secret world may "sound" amazing and i think it does but at the same time i know better than to trust EA by now. and i love TERA, im honestly not all that hyped about gw2 cause i dont have any experience with it and not interested in getting any, for now anyway. so out of all the new games TERA will be my main. |
