So I get home from work ready to jump back into the world event in SWTOR and I log into a disappointment. Over 120 people, huddled together, infecting each other and dying afk in order to farm the latest currency without actually having to play, or socialize, or really do anything at all. Same thing happened on Ilum with kill trading. One could blame this on Bioware for not spotting an obvious exploit. But really, it comes down to why the feck people play mmos these days.

I mean, finally, we have a morsel of actual mmo content in this game and what do people do? AFK for the rewards. Those of us trying to take down bosses legit are sparse. Not enough people to take one down atm. So frustrating. Whats gonna happen when instant gratification becomes the norm in mmos? That reality is just around the corner. In fact, it is being embraced and heralded as the next generation.

I feel the need to find a briken, low pop, hardcore indie mmo and just enjoy playing with people who also enjoy playing. Because the majority, it seems, doesnt give a shit anymore.

Makes you miss the days when you had to play your ass off to get a small amount of currency or a piece of gear.

The old saying is dead, it is now "Patience was a virtue, which required hours we now either dont have or want to invest in with proper substantial rewards for time spend idle or no".

I am sorry it's playing out like that. It sounds like it was a great idea and I would have guessed that the comunity would have responded favorably. I suppose on some servers it went over well, but events like this are the things that can make MMOs so exciting.

yeah. what sucks is that i played this morning and it was great. but 8 hours later, its business as usual. and the worst part is this is on an rp server. I was hoping for a game oriented crowd.

Why are you putting the blame on players? If something can be exploited, it will be exploited. Games should always be designed with that in mind. Always assume the worst. It is the fault of the designer, not the player.

I would say everything its exploitable when we talk about computers; so some refrain its expected yes. No to please me, or others ofc, but to sustain itself; or will simply vanish imo.

Sorry, what are y'all talking about?  What is this event?  Some sorta open world boss fight?  I don't need the exploit explained, I assume it is a reward for being in the area, even if you don't contribute.  There should always be a minimum number of hits to show active participation.

If cosmetics aren't content, why don't people demand a cheaper game done in full grayscale?

Yah, this is one of those things you don't like to say, but it's true -- if something can be exploited, it will be.  Always.  Without fail.  It has nothing whatsoever to do with 'Instant Gratification' (really, little does -- it's more a hobgoblin than anything) and everything to do with human nature.

No, it is the fault of the players that many lack any sort of honor and will cheat whenever its possible to do so.

The fault of the developer is in expecting better from people and not preventing them from falling to their baser instincts.

What do you expect? You know full well that the event was mostly over after 8 hours and all that is left was people wanting the green/black crystals, rakghould pet, or infected companion customization.

1 green crystal costs 83 DNA

Nobody knows how long the event will last so they aquire the DNA in the fast means possible which is by turning into a rakghoul, exploding, and infecting others.

Funny how the event starts with warning people to not goto tatooine because of an rakghoul outbreak but after it is more or less over, everyone has brough the plague to the station and WANT to infect each other.

I think I'm due for another vaccine. The urge is coming back...

BTW are RP servers really about roleplaying? In newer MMOs I didn't know the whole server still did that.

When the gameplay is not fun and it becomes a mindless grind for titles/achievements/gear what would you expect. People don't want to PLAY games anymore, they simply want achievements that they can flaunt to other players.

You could take 2 epic quests that take many hours (for discussion, lets say 8 hrs). One quest, the reward is not given until the end, the other, gives smaller rewards as you go.
The former quest reward is significantly better than the latter quest. But because the latter continuously gives out stuff, many would prefer many but smaller rewards, because to them quantity > quality.
People love their stuff. And they want a lot of it

This why you don't have rewards for pvp that don't get taken away from the person you killed.  Otherwise it get's exploited.

I'll agree its human nature but not everyone does it.

Anything that is exploited... whether like this or use of 3rd party programs.   Simply comes down to the fact that its not in the interest of the game company to ban people... and banning accounts is really the only thing that would change it.    The "afk" for currency crowd falls under that little "spirit of the game clause" that every ToS/Eula include.

Oh well.. whatever I guess.   I quit TOR months ago.. but for people still playing that want others to take part in the game with them... its pretty sad.

Seems in keeping with the first law of MMO development:  When thinking up a new feature or content, put yourself in the shoes of the biggest exploiter asshat griefer troll you can imagine, and ponder how you would use that feature for your intentions.  There's just something about anonymity that brings out the worst in people...

Haven't you seen the Felicia Day thread over in the GW2 section? People falling to their baser insticts seems to be the norm now and developers should always have that in mind. They shouldn't treat their players as human beings, but like animals.

I've seen it and have stayed away from it, since.  Some of the comments I've seen when Pokket posts here are pretty bad too.  Seems like there's nothing a woman can be that won't generate hate in some men.  And other women, for that matter.

http://www.cracked.com/article_19785_5-ways-modern-men-are-trained-to-hate-women.html

Back OT, Kyleran is mostly right.  Many devs consistently underestimate how low a player will stoop to game the system.  Like I said earlier, one of the biggest priorities for new concepts should be to figure out how a person can exploit it and/or use it against other players.  I know it sounds cynical, but it's the truth.
