It's called advertising and marketing. Nothing new. Business are business.

This is why I trust the posters in the forums (even with all their hatred and fanboism) more than the official reviewers.

Tells me the staff liked the game

There are a lot of games with a much lower rating than WoW yet WoW has millions more players than most of the games above it.. combined.

Kind of tells me ratings aren't everything and people should probably decide for themselves.

I ll tell you this personal story. I used to make a fanzine about comics and such with some friends. Things went better than expected and some publishing company contacted us in order to convert our fanzine into an actual comercial magazine.

Before the change, we could say anything we wanted about anything we wanted. After it, we suddenly had to be careful about our articles becouse we were talking about products that the companies were paying to advertise on our magazine.

I bet you get the analogy.

It tells me that mmorpg.com posters don't represent what the larger MMORPG player base thinks.

Sorry staff rewiews/ratings are just as useful as user reviews/ratings. Both are so skewed and twisted by outside influences and are hardly non-biased or objective.

These days you are better trying any game you even show a slight interest in(and almost everyone offers some kind of open beta or try before you buy). Reviews/ratings/hype meter mean jack #$#!.

I usually put my rating of a game right between what the website reviewers say and the forums user says. But in regards to this site, a good percentage of the forum users are bitter, bitter gamers so it's hard to rate without playing a game myself.

The game has a lot of people playing it, so apparently judging a game off of the lunatics who inhabit this site isn't always the best indicator of how good a game is.

Actually, they're the best.    "Professional reviewers" are completely dependent on their advertising revenues they get from the game companies they review.   It is not really bandied about, but many of these developers have gotten reviewers fired for bad reviews.   And then there is, of course, the perncisous influence of money.

Or, as Upton Sinclair best put it:   'It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it.'
 

If your paycheck depends on you (a) hyping games for big developers and (b) not noticing huge flaws...    You'll do that.    It's human nature as you are DEPENDENT upon thier good will.   Just like some fawning courtier to some Emperor.

Grats on your nerdery.  Now, let me ask you this, who is more likely to give a game a 1 out of 10 as a rating just out of spite if they don't like a game?  Mmmorpg.com, or the bitter, hateful people who post on this site?  So even if mmorpg.com is a bit over-generous in their ratings, do you think their rating will be more or less accurate than the children who run around giving 1/10 scores to games they are opposed to on a thematic and philosophical level?  Seems to me it would be pretty easy to drop a score nice and low out of spite if you were a hater of a game.

 Well put, best to let the bitter boys talk and pay them no mind. They are easy enough to spot, same goes for over zealous reviewers such as those at IGN. The real review is in the middle some where.

You know how, when you are extremely hungry, that ANYTHING looks and tastes great just to curb your hunger?  Yeah...that's how I view any review of SWTOR up to date.  Due to the glut of not so filling MMORPG releases in the past 5 years, I think the newness of SWTOR is why it did well in ratings from "pro" reviewers.  Heck, even I fell for it due to sheer boredom with other games.  It took getting to 50 and rolling alts to realize this game wasn't really a 5 star offering at all and more of a, well there isn't anything else in site, so lets just settle for what's available.

Hopefully, in the next few months we finally get some 5 star offerings that show us how bad SWTOR really was.  On the plus side for SWTOR, maybe they will have some nice competition to make them step up their game and actually try to reach that 5 star status.

Have you ever seen a review by an official writter saying that a game is plain bad? Ever? Once in your entire life?
