There seems to be a mass of threads about GW2 hype around at the moment. For the life of me I don't see much hype at all from official sources, certainly nothing compared to what I experienced with SWTOR. Is it a case that the bad experience of SWTOR has made everyone ultra wary or is it something else? Reading between the lines I see a lot of negative posts coming from SWTOR fans and have to wonder is this some kind of grudge match? SWTOR actually had relatively few negative posts until almost a month after release and those were quickly stomped on by fans. GW2 has yet to reach open beta and is already receiving more than it's fair share of criticism. To make matters worse, there seems to be little to complain about other than 'HYPE'. Play fair guys, at least let the game get out the door before trashing it. This hate train looks manufactured otherwise.

I recall GW2 hype threads long before TOR even released. I just figure it comes with reaching close to 9 on the hype-o-meter thingy. For every minute you are angry , you lose 60 seconds of happiness."-Emerson If you can't argue the point don't say anything at all. |

I honestly think it's just years of a hype-disappointment-new game-hype-disappointment etc etc. War, Aion, AOC, Xsyon, Rift, DCUO, SWTOR, so many games have been overhyped to the stratosphere and then so many of them turned out to be "meh" or just plain fiascos... This cycle probably started with VG. I remember the community's excitement about the awesome list of awesome features and then the horrendously buggy and laggy launch.
Problem is, this cycle seems to get shorter and yet more intense each time.

The only people to blame for hype is you for buying into it.

People are excited but nervous. I don't think it has much to do with SWTOR, except maybe one fan in particular who just seems to badmouth GW2 and its fans at every turn. no GW2 won't kill WoW, but it's time to move on and quit worrying about those people still playing it. - eyelolled |

I read your OP and decided to take a stroll through the SWTOR forums. The Butthurt hasnt worn off from the prelaunch days. There was just something about that crowd that .......nevermind. People cant really say they were legitimately fooled with swtor, the writing was on the wall. Both pre and post NDA footage didnt look promising. There was a lot of GW2 followers who would go over to the SWTOR side and purposely started trouble. That same plague is going to strike these forums until launch. We cant complain now that they are doing it. I just spend more time elsewhere now. |

For me made me want to buy GW2. If SWTOR was the game that I wanted it to be I would not need another MMO style game for the next couple of years, but because it is not I decided to go ahead and preorder GW2 since I know I'll end up buying it anyways out of my need to play MMO's.
SWTOR did nothing to dampen my desire to buy and play more games, it just dampened my desire to play SWTOR. I want to be Uncle Owen again. |

There are many videos from beta around the Web. And they will continue to pop-up, which means, there is going to be more criticism. This game better be good. Some people are at the brink of quiting MMOs. Sad indeed. |

I might still buy GW2 but I have no plans to treat it as an MMO. I expect the PvP to be blah and then endgame PVE to be worse. To me it's just an action rpg with a cash shop that is to be played to the end and then find the next game to play. I will not play a game with a cash shop ever again. A dev job should be to make the game better not make me pay so it sucks less. |

Originally posted by DecoyTrooper I get that. I also hope the game doesn't have major problems. People have to understand though, that this isn't your 'normal' mmo. At least not what we've come to expect from typical clone releases over the last few years. If you haven't played the original Guildwars, it might be a shock to the system. |

Skills change based on weapons used. EPIC! All the need to do is keep adding more weapons like whips/flails/crossbows and things! They dont really even need new classes(but will probably be added as a cash shop thing). |

Originally posted by jacklo I can't see that happening. Not with how many changes they've made from conception until now to facilitate those who are "conditioned" into playing a certain way. "For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction"- Isaac Newton. Apparently that goes for mmo ratings as well as physics... |

The only factor that caused fans of SWTOR to be disappointed was EA/Bioware's dishonesty. They clearly marketed a game that did not resemble the launched product. (HD textures were removed, the static worlds, 100 v. 100 Ilum PvP didn't work as adverstised, etc. etc.)
This isn't the fault of GW2 fans. So if there is any obtainable "payback", it's being misdirected. The source of the SWTOR fans' ire is EA/Bioware. Their best bet at exacting revenge is to cancel their subs. Speak with their hard-earned money. This might grab the attention of the industry with a clear message of, "Hey! You bullshit us . . . we'll walk away with our wallets."
Either GW2 is going to be a great game or it isn't. I have no personal stake vested in it. Nor will I go on the warpath if it isn't stellar. Re: SWTOR "Remember, remember - Kakk says 'December.'" |

Well, you have to look at the "hype" here because this is where you're posting. This site has a hype meter and it seems like 85 percent of the posts are about Guild Wars 2. By the way, I don't think TOR was a disappointment. Just unrealistic expecatations for any game. |
