Would you like the idea of having a Comfort Meter and Bonus Equipment Slot that is solely used to wear items that can either warm or cool the body in extreme climates, e.g., Tundras, Deserts? If I'm running around on a frozen area with nothing but a Metal Bikini, my Comfort Meter should be off; thus, my character should perform less than ideal. However, if I equip some type of wool cloak to keep my character warm, my character will perform much better. The same concept should apply to deserts etc.
I don't know. I guess I'm just a fan of the little things.

Something like that would work well in a game like UO or AC, where the rest of the game is designed to accommodate multiple gear sets and varying tactics based on location/condition. Would really like to see something like that added to some of the newer MMOs, although I can already see the cries from a defeated team complaining that the reason they lost is because the winning side had a GM friend press the "Sleet and Rain" button to give them an advantage. filmoret: One thing I have never figured out is why the game devs hardly ever fix simple problems that arise. It is like they don't care about the pvp community. Nitth: What makes you so sure its a simple fix? filmoret: Because most of them are. Sometimes its just changing a number in a code string other times its creating a few variables. However none of them should take over a few hours of coding. |

Yeah...I don't think so. I mean, lets just go all the way and really be realistic... This discussion was had, and killed 12 years ago. I don't play games for their realistic depictions of living. I don't want to have to 'warm' up, eat, sleep, etc in my games. I get enough of that in real life. |

I would go much further. I really like what Discworld mud has done for their seasons and climate system. They of course have all the seasons, day, night, moon cycles. Temperature, precipitation, storms...it's pretty detailed. They have deserts, tundras, swamps, mountains...all kinds of terrains and environments. The temperature even fluctuates throughout the day and night cycles. In order to stay healthy you need to wear the appropriate clothing. In winter you need warm dry clothing, in summer clothing that provides cooling. If you don't wear the right kinds of clothing, you can become over heated and eventually die. Same with wet and cold conditions. You can get your present condition by typing 'temp' but the game gives you hints if you are feeling uncomfortable, like 'squelching' while walking if you've become wet. So you need to really plan ahead if you are going on a trip. Knowing where shelter is is vital, as being out in nasty weather conditions for too long can lead to death. Here is an example of my character after typing temp. It's chilly here.
Of course in a 3d mmo they would need to provide more visual representations. I think this would add a lot of playabilty to mmo's. Also a good reason to keep differents sets of clothing and armour for the conditions your likely to be in. |

I love the idea as well. Maybe there is a Stamina Bar that dictates fatigue. If it's it's an arctic environment and you're bare like in that picture your stamina pool decreases double by a certian interval a tick or something and vice versa for more humid climate zones. |

Xsyon is in the process of bringing inthe whole comfort thing.
Comfort based on weather conditions and clothing, affecting most actions.
ofc they are in the process of bringing many game feaures in.... |

I approve of this idea, but it wouldnt work with every game. Id love to see it in a future MMO. |

Originally posted by nariusseldon I'd like it in the right setting. E.g. in Fallen Earth, where there is a sense of, just trying to survive, it would make sense. Xsyon maybe too, I only beta'd it, and cant say i read any lore. "Never met a pack of humans that were any different. Look at the idiots that get elected every couple of years. You really consider those guys more mature than us? The only difference between us and them is, when they gank some noobs and take their stuff, the noobs actually die." - Madimorga |

While it's not related to clothing, LotRO has environmental debuffs in Forochel, where if you're out in the cold for long, you lose cold resistance; you can build a fire and stand by it for a while or drink certain drinks to temporarily remove the debuff. Some places in Moria have a poison debuff that increases the longer you stay in the area... If they didn't go overboard with them, I'd like to see them elsewhere. Having a system like that based on clothing as the OP states could be cool, too, if designed well. If you have to being 8 different outfits with you everywhere you go, that could prove to be annoying. |

I'm all for your idea and there's definately players out there that are really eager to see a developer really take the steps needed into making our MMORPG's next generation. We have seen some improvements in the MMO areas as far as gameplay, grouping, dynamic events and the actual functioning of these things. I hope developers also do not forget to evolve the RPG element that truely makes our games unique. I feel that a project along those means would take a good amount of backing finacially and a group of developers that actually had a focus on providing evolutionary RPG elements. The game doesn't have to be entirely based on providing groundbreaking RPG elements. They would be used to support the world and breath more life into the characters. More so tertiary elements than primary or secondary to sparkle the little things in throughout much like what OP suggested are IMHO some of the concepts I'm really waiting to see in titles. Blending our games no so much to mimic life and make them like jobs or more work than fun. Those type of things can have a great draw for both the hardcore and casual and would have a good place for more social interaction in games. The evolution of the /emote kinda |

Originally posted by nariusseldon It adds alot to RP, IMO. It's a bit offputting to me to be up in some artic mountain area and see some girl run by in a chain mail bikini. Maybe it's stuff similar to what's suggested here that's what keeps me subbed to LotRO. With dread and hope effects where things are actually visually brighter when your hope is up, and dark and murky when dread sets in... Same with a suggestion like the OP's. If there was a system that gave a visual representation of (dis)comfort coupled with buff/debuffs, and that you could choose to respond to those needs, I think it would help draw you into the environment a bit more. But as I was saying earlier... if it was done in a way that would have you changing clothes every 5 minutes, that would be pretty lame. But anything that helps reflect the world environment(not taken too far) would be a positive, IMO. |
