Yes, i will be waiting for atleast 3 months. After playing MMO's for 12 years i really don't get hyped by anything any more. I will wait for reviews, player responses etc. and after that decide if i'm going to buy it or not. Playing the first week or month can be a real pain, while developers are usually still repearing some critical bugs and there is just to many people playing at once. |

I definitely get where the OP is coming from and i generally apply a similar logic these days in my game buying ventures but since it is B2P GW2 does not warrant a wait and see approach in my book.. Another important factor for me is getting a hands on before buying most games and i have been fortunate to get to play GW2 and every indication and feel to me is that the hype is not hype at all... For as little as $60 pre-purchase is a no brainer to me even if i had not got to try it first because anet being a relative new kid on the block with one awesome release has not yet destroyed my confidence in them to deliver and hopefully they never do.. Games that are on hold for months (wait and see) if ever due to trust or other issues are D3, TSW, Tera...
Playing GW2.. |

Unless you're short on cash, I see no reason to avoid this games release. You can check back with GW2 whenever you want.. if you know you're going to buy it in the future you might as well buy it from the start. You can still wait til later to play it properly, but you can at least try it out and know for sure whether or not you'd rather play it later. Plus, launch time is FUN. Who cares if u get kicked and have to queue sometimes. Seeing masses of people in the starter zones and the whole 'brand new' thing and chat channel zerg is FUN. Some people take it all too seriously... |

I've decided to completely avoid the launch day hype the only way that makes sense to me.
Already pre-purchased and will start three days early.
Take THAT hype-machine! |

Originally posted by Boatsmate You know, I've actually wondered about that from time to time too. People are so ready to believe that companies hire people to do their undercover PR as disguised customers and regular people, so if that kind of PR is considered effective, then why not the black PR or anti-PR kind? Heck, smear campaigns has managed to destroy political careers, damaged the reputation of celebs, politicians and other public figures and prevented some politicians from winning elections and some of that was done by hired PR firms. It's a proven fact in many other situations that such kinda smear campaigns and destructive PR works and that people in general tend to believe the worst of others quicker than the most positive of others, so why would it suddenly be unbelievable when it comes to games and a multi-billion dollar games industry? It's not as if there haven't been rumors from time to time that third party companies have been involved in practices like that for Activision Blizzard around other MMO launches, and who offered other game companies like SOE something sortlike claiming that they had helped keep WoW's playerbase stable throughout other major MMO launches. But it wouldn't be done inhouse. Just like with other industries, if it's the case then Activision Blizzard's Kotick would simply hire an outside PR firm specialised in that kind of dirty work and probably give it an umbrella mission and target like 'keeping WoW's playerbase and revenues at this and that level around and after other AAA MMO launches', and leave it to those outside parties how they'd help realise it. Plausible deniability and that sort of stuff. We'll probably never know for sure. |

Originally posted by Volkon Oh you showed that machine. Going to pre-purchase toomorrow also. As I already said, there's no point in waiting, except if you want to save your money if it fails, but then again you buy it and that's it. |

avoiding a game due to well-deserved hype is dumb |

Why isn't there a poll? I was curious about the numbers. ^.^
Anyway, nope, I'm not waiting. Five years have been enough. Also I have yet to purchase a game based on hype and to feel disappointed afterwards, since I usually can get a pretty good idea what I'm actually getting into. Watching gameplay videos and getting a few hours of gameplay time during betas etc usually gives me a pretty good idea whether I'd like a game or not. |

Why i should avoid it?, no monthly fee, i can always quit when i want and return as i wish. Game looks decent (at least) and will be worth the initial price. |

Besides that why would we avoid this game if tommorow is pre-order and access to beta? Unrealistic hype? Where? By whom? Did you read any reviews, did you watch any videos? You either love it or hate it. Can you avoid posting for 3-6 months before your unrealistic hatred is gone? |

Naw, not terrified of disappointment. Been to too many opening days, I (personally) enjoy them...pleasant sort of chaos, usually. |

I would think 3-6 weeks not months should be sufficient to know if any game is OK to spend money and time to invest in. By then the state of the game is known. More importantly the beginning areas have cleared out and the economy is more balanced than at the very begining. 3+ weeks is my rule and has served me well. Kept me from buying FF14 and SWTOR at all. If GW2 has major issues I will know it and if not I will buy it. Certainly not in a hurry to be part of the initial onslaught on launch day. |

Originally posted by jondifool Hype doesnt hurt anything apart from the individual that cannot make up their mind even though there is a ridiculous amount of video coverage out there. Or for those that are really trying to find something to complain about like the OP given their post history of this game. A hyped launch that is disappointing 3 months afterwards has nothing to do with the hype. It has to do with being a poor game. Since there is no sub fee then if one is wanting to try it out there is no difference between $60 at launch or $60 3-6 months later. Now if someone was wanting to wait for a sale I can see that, but that is different then avoiding hype. |

If by hype you mean showing us content and letting people play the game in demos and betas, then yeah, I guess there's been a lot of hype.... |

Nope.. hype is in the eye of the beholder and I played enough Guild Wars, and read enough about Guild Wars 2 to know exactly what I am getting and I know it will be well worth the $60 so I will pick it up. How much I will play it at launch is another question. I am a Diablo addict so it will be probably be taking up all of my time. |

Originally posted by itgrowls This has never been the definition of hype. In my 30+ years of existance, until GW2 fans started making this claim, I had never before seen it. I have been reading these forums for years and this has never been the definition used for hype until GW2 fans started using it. It is a way of basically saying "ignore they hype, its not really hype." There seems to be a push from some GW2 fans to redefine what certain words mean. Even redefine their own views on certain aspects. There's one frequent poster who in his/her sig use to have levels of acceptable cash shop items. The only acceptable form listed was purchase of new zones/dungeson. Unacceptable forms included vanity items that should be in game such as appearance clothing, mounts, etc. Things like exp boosts were also "wrong." Well after the discovery that GW2 would have these things in the cs. Bye Bye signature with that list. It is ok now apparently. |

ANET, with 3 games and an expansion under their belt, has an undisputed reputation of having the smoothest game launches for an MMO, plus their credo of releasing only when it's ready gives me confidence that they will not botch the job on the big day and i dont have to worry about queues on Day 1, because there will be no queues thanks to the innovation of overflow servers as for the hype, i have fairly been realistic in my expectations of the game. my expectation is not that this is the messiah of the MMO genre. my only expectation is i'm going to enjoy the hell out of this game for a long time!
