This is a terrible idea on so many levels I just don't know where to start. Goons and somethingawful are a terrible thing to use as a role model for anything in the world. What unites SA / Goons is a strong culture and system of values, although hardly organized, standard, mainstream or acceptable by many, they do have enough common "out of game stuff" that is strong enough to band and keep them togethter, even more so considering the drudgery that large scale EVE can be. Since the EVE sandbox fosters for different kinds of playstyles without being overly judgemental and gives players lots freedom, in the end it was a match between the "peg that doesn't fit anywhere else" and a "all purpose womb". MMORPG crowd doesn't have a common culture or set of values, we are basically people that like to play different games, shop around, follow the market and try out new trends. I feel most do not commit too much to a single game and over time prefer to step back and play other things. So basically we would be starting in a new game with a guild made up of people that like to switch games and don't really have that much else in common :) |

I'd support an official or unoffical MMORPG.com guild of sorts, though like other posters have mentioned, I can only imagine there being some difficulty as to deciding what is we're going to play together. Regardless, this community really isn't as full of assholes as some people like to believe, which is probably being more confused with the spirit of debate than it is actual negativity or discordance. Yeah, people around here argue. It's a public message board. What do you expect?
All of that said, bring it on. If it takes playing together to prove to some of you maroons that this community isn't entirely compromised of trolls and dingle berries, I'm all for it. Let's play a game! "This is life! We suffer and slave and expire. That's it!" -Bernard Black (Dylan Moran) |

Originally posted by Loktofeit ^ Haha, well played. I agree that an mmorpg.com guild would be a recipe for disaster. Everyone is much better off finding guilds that fit your personality, rather than forcing coexistence among players whose personalities you clash with on a fundamental level. Concerning this strange pseudo-nationalistic "if you are not with us you are against us" sentiment expressed by sinjin, there's just no place for it in MMOs, especially not in GW2, which seems to be striving to produce a flexible, cooperative, friendly gaming environment. We don't need that mentality, which has crippled empathetic relations among cultures in the real world, perpetuated and legitimized in a video game world. Blind loyalty to any entity, especially something as silly as a guild tag over your head, is never a good thing. I welcome a system that encourages you to actually forge relationships and earn the respect and loyalty of your fellow players in order to keep them in your guild. Wannabe dictators need not apply. As for myself, I already have a strong foundation of gamer friends who I am extremely excited to play GW2 with. We've played many MMOs and other games together over the past decade, and we all have a ton of respect for each other as players and people. I also look forward to meeting new gamer friends in other focused guilds, because, you know, we don't ALL enjoy the exact same aspects of MMOs to the exact same extent. If one of us wants to go RP in an RP guild for the night, go have a great time, I say. /endthreadderailment

Originally posted by Lawlmonster I don't thik it's a matter of everyone being asshats, far from it, as most people treat others with respect as long as they receive the same in return. The problem I see is so many different gaming mentalities coming together under one guild tag. Originally posted by Distopia Yeah, you'd certainly have pockets of individuals doing their own thing, though I think that's almost impossible to avoid in any gaming community. "This is life! We suffer and slave and expire. That's it!" -Bernard Black (Dylan Moran) |

I recall the mmorpg.com guild for Vanguard. There were so many different types of players that it just could't work. There were the couples who were more interested in just playing together, there were the players who wanted to explore many classes/races before leaving the trial island, there were some players who were impatient because they wanted the guild to hurry up as they wanted to get to the raiding.

Aftter rolling an Engineer, my first act as an mmorpg.com guild member would be to hand you each a grenade without the pin. Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not. |

So now ppl are arguing that there is no real philosophy behind the mmorpg guild, no real representations of beliefs ??
Because Goon Swarm from the forum site somethingawful.com were about being the underdog in EVE and overwhelming the enemy by having hundreds of them use tier1 ships and doing constant suicide runs, slowly wearing down the enemy etc.... They wanted to prove that the many weak can destroy the most powerful aliances etc. And Goon Swarm also loved trolling and causing mischief as part of their core philosophy.
The core philosophy behind the mmorpg guild is that most of us here are very passionate about gaming, even as a way of life etc. Sure u might be very busy in rl but u can still have a strong passion for games, even on a casual level. Sure there are imbeciles here in the forums, but ive also witnessed top forum contributors who are quite reputable with being pretty sophisticated individuals themselves, and can not only extrapolate their ideas into a very cohesive manner, but also show subtle humour that can also be pretty brillant to read.
So mmorpg guild does have a philosophy like Goon Swarm from somethingawful.com. I say our philosophy is that we have many who are passionate about gaming, and we have some of the most respected and intellectual leaders/contributors here than anywhere else.

So a guild full of 'bads' who spend their time in vent arguing about sandboxes vs themeparks and crying about the unfairness of it all each time they got killed?
Let's face it, it would be nothing at all like the two guilds you mentioned OP. Still it could be comedy gold, for the others guilds in the game. |

William Murphy is a man of action, he didnt listen to the critics and the excuses, hes a real hero and created an official mmorpg guild for TERA. i just want to applaud him for bravery. and i would be forever grateful if he created one for GW2 with own subforum too etc.. |
