Those characters who got bumped to lvl 50 in SWTOR pvp were able to participate in warzones, but if they were caught out of position and had to 1v1 a true lvl 50.......GG. Edit: Forgot to answer the OP. Yes, I would buy the game now. Without a doubt. |

Even in it's unfinished state, it offers me more of what I've been looking for in MMOs than any other I've played, or expect to play in the near or distant future. It would mean waiting for sylvari before I could create my main, but I have enough alts lined up for norn and human to tide me over in the meantime. |

You pretty much are doing this or worse when you do the pre-purchase. You are actually buying the game, just for access to the beta and 3 days head start so regardless of whether you like it or not from what you see in the beta, you can't back out like in a pre-order. |

Originally posted by DeserttFoxx Understandable. This is not progression mmorpg. If your main thing in mmropg's is hardcore raiding then you would be propably bored in GW2. I mean propably you will be able to find hard 5 man dungeons , and maybe some challanging open world bosses / events ,but still GW2 will offer you no instanced raids at all and close to none gear progression.
In WvWvW level will matter (even thou you get bumped) but after you hit max level you propably will be preety much even ,unless they will add some gear dependancy but I doubt and they seem to imply that they don't want to.
Instanced "arenas" PvP - you get max level + gear in there since I don't know level 2? You get auto bumped to max level + you can choose some high weapons and stuff.
Is is worse or better than progression based heavy raid mmropg?
Neither.
Just diffrent.
So you're propably doing good to avoid.
I always repeat , do research and know what you buy , then you can avoid being disappointed and angry.

What current state? How do I know? If it's not done, I would say no. I don't need another mmo feeling rushed because of time/cash. Do it right, or fail is imo the way it's been for years now with this genre. GW1 did it so right, I would really be turned off if they dropped quality and let it out unfinished. I also stopped jonesing for games a long time ago, saves me $$$.

Originally posted by Maephisto Yep, SWTOR tried that with their battlegrounds and it sucked ass. Not sure how it will fly in GW2.
And no, I would not buy the game in its current state. I no longer am the kind of gamer that will buy a pig in a poke. I'll wait and see how the game does once it is released into the wild, where it is no longer protected by the devs and their marketing department letting us see only what they want us to see.

I'da bought it back when it was GuildWars: Utopia. ...and woulda payed full price on release... Seriously. As each chapter of GW1 came out they just kept getting better and better. I'da been playing it right now instead of reading these stupid posts thhat are always doom-mongering one of the highest rated game franchises ON mmorpg.com (that isn't even a real MMORPG!). Infact, I'm not gonna finish this post b/c it's GREEN DROP WEEKEND and I got some green weapons to go farm. Have fun stewing in your own boredom without me ya sad little whiners... |

I'm already going to pre-purchase on April 10th, for access to what could be as few as two or three beta weekend events leading up to launch. So, if the question, as edited in the OP, is if I would buy the game now for full access to the 24/7 beta, then the answer would have to be yes. Originally posted by Tardcore In WvW, i am guessing it will play out much like it did in SWTOR warzones (im speculating here). If you are level 2 and zone into the mists and get caught by someone significantly higher in actual level, it will probably end badly. I just cant see how it will work out in any other way. That being said, even in SWTOR, by the time you reached lvl 16+ you could reasonably contribute to team mechanics in warzones (this kinda changed by the time people were in full champion/battlemaster gear). If you ran off trying to be a hero, you got stomped. I think this will play out similarly in WvW. |

Originally posted by Tardcore There are some big differences in how it will work in GW2 vs. SWTOR. TOR used scaling, with out skill and gear unlocks, for PVP arena based combat. The nature of balanced team, arena combat in confined spaces really relies on balance for their to be fun for both sides. There was nothing balanced about the TOR version of PVP scaling. In GW2, the arena based PVP scales not just level, but gives players access to all the skills, traits and max stat gear, making it completely about skill, rather than PVE world based character progression. There are even a few differences between the TOR scaling method and scaling in WvW in GW2.
In GW2, you do earn skill points for leveling, but there are also many skill point challenges, with a wide variety of win conditions, through out the game world. A character can have more skill points at a given level than another character, if the player actively pursues skill point challenges. Level isn't always the determining factor in skill access for GW2. However, a reminder that the advantage for one who pursues skill point opportunities is diversity of skills to chose from, not the raw power of skills available to that character.
So, in GW2, there would be a sizable disparity in WvW between a level 2 character and a level 80 character. Not only the difference is gear, but a level 2 character whould have access only to the weapon skills they have unlocked and their heal skill. However, the disparity between a level 30 and a level 80 would be much less pronounced, since the level 30 would have all skill slots unlocked and with wise skill selection could have a full compliment of active skills just as effective as those of the level 80 character. Scaling of stats occurs, which cuts down a bit on the gear advantage, though the level 80 would have more traits slotted.
In most games, even a level 70 would have little chance vs. a well equiped level 80, no matter how good the level 70 player was and how bad the level 80 player was. The advantage granted by level disparity in GW2 WvW is much reduced vs. standards set by other titles. Skill will play a much bigger role, but true level will still provide an edge.

GW2 is not going to be like so many hope for. They don't have tons of money to toss at this. And every kind of game, mmo get these silly threads before the game launchs and will give up tons of money for sight unseen. To much time has passed. The graphics look dated and you cant go by some video. If you get the chance to see it before you buy then do what you want. But lol try not to use the word "hard core" when your going by some video.. I know you got in the beta played it blah blah.. Good game but so much of it has changed.. buying it? Not yet.. |
