My desktop is randomly possessed by Cthulhu?! Hell I just thought I needed a new heating fan. I used to play MMOs like you, but then I took an arrow to the knee. |

I would love a survival horror MMORPG. Rather than have it as a town as the main area, as i think that would limit the size of the game. You could still have a 'silent hill based zone' which would be more mysterious and spooky than the rest of the game, with areas within the town perfect for grouping, especially to tackle a chain linked quest, with the final boss encounter being dramatic, as well as gory. So instead I would go down the angle of some mutant virus having spread across the world. With it being set initially in some country, either based on, or the actual USA. Probably it would be best to make it a country, based on the US, so that lore could be created. However, it would be familiar enough, with cars, cell phones, modern day weaponry. Future expansions could add new countries, and more lore, expanding the mystery of what happened. It would have loads of possibilities. Instead of just grinding out xp by shooting zombies, you could have it rich in stories, with relevant quests. Ultimately, there would be plenty of rumour and conjecture as to what has occurred. Perhaps it could have been a virus being developed to create super warriors, which went wrong and created mutants out of the population, with varying degrees of power. Perhaps it was to fight a secret battle between the vampire lords, and the lycanthropes (which are not just werewolves, but werebears, wererats, weretigers, etc). Perhaps the vampire vrs werebeast war was ongoing for centuries, and only comes to light because of the virus. Either way, there could be three factions, plus a neutral one. Now, you might think that a world blighted by this virus would suddenly look odd with loads of players running around. Either the game begins several years after the original tragedy, and human players have learned to adapt. Having taken over certain cities and towns as their homes. You could actually do something with player housing. Being essential for storage, especially with weapons and ammo. You could buy various booby traps to protect against unwanted visitors, even ´pet ´ system which you could earn through quests . But a lot of home defence would be required for when either faction attacks took place, like a vampire blood raid, or non faction attacks like a massive, mutant attack. Just imagine how scary it would be if the air raid sirens were blaring, and through loud speakers you heard a voice constantly saying, 'warning, warning, we are under attack. Protect yourselves.' neutrals would stay and do their best to defend their house, or trailer. Seeing about a hundred or maybe more mutants approaching. If you were in a human guild, you would be classed as being a militia. Not only should your militia have a proper base, which would level up depending on guild/militia achievements, and length of time your militia was in creation. This would open up more powerful defences, and better bases. All of this would be classed as a starter area. Crafters in this game would have a crucial roll. Mods for weapons, farming and cooking for essential food. Hunting, which would be generic for all factions. Vampires would be the bad guys. They would have a reason for pvp, as you can actually get temporary skills on killing humans. Their guilds are based on bloodlines. I am going to post this just now as my battery is running out. I'd like to explain more about this game.

I would LOVE a zombie apocalypse MMO with permadeath. The trick is you need a HUGE world and limit the number of players and communication so you aren't constantly bumping into other survivors. It should be a chore to find another survivor just as it should be a chore to find shelter, water, food, medicine, clothing, and weapons. |

Originally posted by Boge that'd definitely be a cool mmo to play. Maybe a world the size of Second LIfe? Or something extremely large like it. Thus the things like finding survivors and water, as you said, would in fact be a chore. But what if players are palying for like a month and just get an extremely large group together by chance? They could potentially stay alive forever with enough effort. And with something like this, what would happen when you logged out?

That is just inefficient. If you want the experience of "not bumpping into other surviviors", have a small group multiplayer game. Greating the large world with few in each area is a waste of development resources. |

It really isn't possible to make a survival horror MMO. Unless you want something similar to current MMOs with zombie mobs, but with some sort of survival rule set. |

Personally i wouldn't play it, i'd rather stick with single players for that genre. Any MMO with that aspiration would have to be HEAVILY instanced in order to keep the atmosphere going. Otherwise you'd be making your way across a field in the pitch black, barely able to see your hands reaching out feeling your way only for a naked chick to pop up "gold plzzz, plzzzz, nd potz, plzzzzzzzzz". Always keep your words soft and sweet, just in case you have to eat them. |

I think World of Darkness is the closest you will see to Survival Horror, you will be the monster tho. Currently bored with MMO's. |

What if you just created a character and get randomly dropped into the world? The modern world. The object? Survive. Progression is how long you survive. Maybe have a giant skill tree that is the same for everyone...but you can acquire skill points based on how long you have survived and certain actions within the game and spend the skill points in any direction you like. Build weapons, vehicles, fortresses, etc. Anything goes.
Hell, you could maybe even go as far as having players that succum to the zombies have the option of hunting players as a zombie for a completely different progression scale, or achievement something or other =P. /shrug Could be fun.

Answer? Hes mostly complaining about the community, that is all that text is. QQ stacked in a pile. The problem is the safety in games, you are never in danger and you can always read your funny "AREA CHATZZZ LOLOLLLLLOOOLOLO". What is needed is a big world and lesser communication to remove that safety. Why should players see each others names? Make it hard for people to find others. Make people able to backstab each other and the safety would be thrown out of the window. |

Originally posted by Kuro1n Names should only show briefly, and between players within a certain vicinity of one another. Same with communication...players should only be able to communicate within a certain distance...a bit further for shouting....nothing beyond that. To add that feeling of fear...the true feeling of fear...you could make it permadeath for that character upon in-game death. Would make it meaningful beyond a simple respawn and a crappy meaningless debuff. |

filmoret: One thing I have never figured out is why the game devs hardly ever fix simple problems that arise. It is like they don't care about the pvp community. Nitth: What makes you so sure its a simple fix? filmoret: Because most of them are. Sometimes its just changing a number in a code string other times its creating a few variables. However none of them should take over a few hours of coding. |

multi-faction- human- zombie\mutant\ vampire\lycan thingy etc leader board for days survived, humans\zombies\mutants\vampires\lycan things killed, things saved\cured Players will start off as human but... humans, vamps, and lycans can be mutated\zombified infected. they woould be different skills and attributes for each combo, and the convert "leveled up' their apperance would change. (think some of the bosses and higher level enemies for resident evil and other games) Players being on both sides will always keep things interesting. Of course there will also be npc enemies too. |
