I thought mmorpgs were about progression, if I automatically wanted to get into the fray of things and have a game about 100% skill, wouldnt I play a twitched based FPS, mmorpgs should be 50% skill, 50% progression |

OP - Uh yeah, GW 1 was set up that way, too. However, people who chose that route did not have as good gear as people who progressed through the game levels. They were competative, but not as well geared. Not news. I make spreadsheets at work - I don't want to make them for the games I play. |

The OP lost me, what is he talking about? Source links would be helpful. Also....if it's anything like GW1, I'm not surprised and am kind of glad they are doing it that way, it lets those who just want to PVP have fun right away, just like in GW1. Makes everyone happy. |

Only for the duration of the "competitive PvP match". Once you step back out into the game world or go to WvWvW oyu will be what ever your level is. |

When you have a competitive pvp you make it just so. Also it's why you shouldn't have to play something you don't want to play in order to play what you want to play to have fun. It's why people say endgame starts at level 2.
You don't stay level 80 and all that other stuff unless you play competitive skill base pvp. You also get something called glory, get cooler skins, and upgrades like precision and what not but doesn't make you stronger. You have WvWvW which doesn't boost you to level 80, you can progress in that mode, same as just doing pve. Only thing about WvWvW is your health get boosted, so you can't get k.o in one hit. So yea really it's that way. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ns-IIn-DG-c Try to argue this please. Oh also if you quote me and it's to argue my point, if I don't respond it means I haven't been corrected by you and/or I haven't seen it. Remember I don't mind admitting I am in the wrong. Take care :D |

OMG someone is doing something different than EQ/WoW/WAR/AoC/TOR/EQ2 etc. etc. No way it's going to work, I mean, everyone here just LOVES the fact that all these MMOs do things the same way right?!

When you zone into the Mists you are level 80. However, its not the same as being a level 80 and zoning into the mists. Once you zone out you are back to what ever level you were, and obviously once you are 80 in good gear you will be better off than someone who is level 1 stepping in with nothing and being buffed to make it a competition.
If you check out some Mists PVP vids you can see next to their level an (80) So it would appear like (80) 15 as it does in this video. |

Which is why I've been saying GW2 isn't really a "proper" MMORPG in the traditional sense because they've tried very hard to reduce/minimize the progression aspect of it and flatten it out more into a FPS model of leveling the playing field for everyone. But no matter what you call it, there is obviously a huge playerbase who want this sort of title, so it will do great.

[mod edit] Anyway, to get back to the topic, when you enter the PvP area, you get boosted to level 80. At least, that's my understanding of it. I'm not sure if it's also the case about competitive type of PvP. OP can do the research himself and post his findings here. Based on those findings we could enter a discussion I supose, but then again, the OP didn't show any willingness to do so. Guild Wars had the option to create a level 20 character, which was the maximum level there. Skills, weapon & armor enchanments you would normally earn while PvE-ing, needed to be unlocked with the PvP currencies you earned while PvP-ing. |

I like to play like X You like to play like Y Because X is better than Y, Y should not be allowed because my way is better than yours haha mr poopy pants!
Thats pretty much what I get out of all these posts with people complaining about optional gameplay. Its as if options are bad and people should be forced to do everything the exact same way...so I can then also go complain someplace else about how everything is the same in every game and that the genre is stale. “I hope we shall crush...in its birth the aristocracy of our moneyed corporations, which dare already to challenge our government to a trial of strength and bid defiance to the laws of our country." ~Thomes Jefferson |

You can spot those with no history with GW immediately. GW was/is 2 games in one. On one side you had those who pretty much PVP'd only, and on the other, those who PVE'd only, with a few that did some of both(yes, I'm generalizing) From my experience, those that PVP'd only, had absolutely NO interest in PVE, period, and one thing that appealed to them was not having to go through hours and hours of what to them was boring gameplay, just so they could get to what they really wanted to do. Therefore, it is no surprise, that Anet is going to carry that philosophy over to GW2, because they have 2 distinct, loyal fanbases. They are going to take care of both of those groups. I'm guessing with much more crossover this time. Those that don't get it.............too bad. |
