What is "real"? How do you define "real"?

3/27/12 10:11:58 PM#1

I've been bored these days, and while waiting on Guild Wars 2 I need something to pass the time with. I've been looking around for MMOs but few grab my attention, this is one of them.

I've been looking for something different, tired of the WoW cartoon feel, I also want to try my new rig on this game to see how well it does.

The huge download puts me off a little, and also the F2P model, it seems like it has many restrictions, If the game is good though I'll probably be willing to dish out the 35 bucks for the 3month subscription, hopefully GW2 will be out by then.

Guess what I want to know is, how good is it combat wise and lasting appeal. Does it have a good long lasting value? I tried WoW for about 4 hours and got bored then because of the same old quest system and the combat wasn't any entertaining either, it would be dissapointing to try this game for the same time and get bored of it.

The combat here is supposed to be more dynamic, not your standing around casting spells or swinging a sword, how true does this hold on? How is the PvP in this game, balanced or imbalanced? Will I be smashing skills until I kill my target or is moving around rewarded?

Are the quests entertaining? is this more of a group game than solo? Open world PvP or how does it work?

At last if you don't think it's worth it, is there another game that you would recommend? For example I tried skyrim but it didn't hook me, maybe because I feel lonely in the world, I mean the game is nice and pretty but I couldn't hang on it for too long, after it took me an hour or so to do 2-3 quests which were okay in terms of entertaining me.

Anyways leave a small review if you can, I'll be sure to check them out tomorrow while at work, would be a nice read ;)

Remember... all I'm offering is the truth. Nothing more.

I'd say it's worth a try, but I might be biased since I did enjoy the game.

It's a good game to test a new rig, I'd honestly say that it is one of (if not the) most beautiful game these days when it comes to enviroments (characters too though they feel a bit wooden sometimes). You won't really fell most of the F2P restrictions until you're higher level except maybe for the limited bag space.

On the combat side, I'd recommend you to try a melee char first. At least from my point of view, the caster chars fell kinda boring, mostly spamming the same skills over and over, a lot like other games, while melee does feel different because you actually have to manually swing your weapon, and the combo system feels fluid and very nice once you get used to it. Also it's not exactly tab target. You can target an enemy, but seems to be mostly for visual help, since whoever your sword hits when it swings (or when you activate a combo), gets hit by it, so moving around to place as many enemies as you can where your sword will hit them is very important.

On the quest side, that is the same old. Most are the basic fedex/kill 10 rats/kill this one guy/bring me 10 bear skins style, though there are quite a few that are more story based which makes them more interesting. There are fewer of them once you leave tortage at level 20, though. Grouping is a very valid option but you don't have to. The population when I played after the transition to F2P seemed healthy enough and had no problems finding groups for quests when I wanted to, but most quests are soloable.

Can't talk about the PvP, since I played on a PvE server, but heard lots of people returnign to the game and enjoying it after they introduced the more hardcore PvP ruleset server.

What can men do against such reckless hate?

worth to try? Yes

Worth to keep playing? No.

The game lost the vast majority of its players for a reason and yet somehow Funcom thinks going the pay trap route will work...well, it didnt.

they claim 600,000 people created accounts yet log in and ask the players, maybe a few hundred stuck around  and payed to keep playing...the rest stopped because the majority of the content is pay to access and even then you are limited to only  a few gold pieces and chat which can only be unlocked via subscribing.

Oh and you can only create the base classes, the rest are locked.

Funcoms shop is also crazy expensive, the newer expansion is $70.

Yep...$70 for an expansion...to an almost dead game. Funcom is screwy, they more than likely could have stolen a million F2P players if they had implimented an actual microtransaction shop and made a ton more money and allowed people to expierence the game.

It worked for DDO and its making several companies like frogster filthy stinking rich.

If you've never played Tortage then that is a good zone. Fully voiced and fairly good quests. After tortage the quest quality drop quite a bit. Because Funcom didnt have time to make the content as good as on tortage for the rest of the game. So your mostly outdoor running around killing X mobs etc.

Some zones have been created after launch and are quite a bit better for example, Ymir's Pass (55-63) is a very nice zone, and ends with a high quality dungeon at lvl 62-63. Then there is Tarantia Commons at 76+, and the new Turan area at 50+. You can also play the newer Khitai 20-40 zone, but it's harder than the original zones.

Age of Conan is probally one of the best PVE games onthe market, graphisc are amazing, combat is great and a nice move away from the standard tab target stuff...

There is a half decent player story that is fully voiced going through the all the game up until lvl 80, then a bit of voiced story gonig to the exp zones.

The rest of the quests are your average Themepark quests and work pretty well, some nice group dungeons throughout the game and a lot of zones you need to play with others to complete the quests.

PVP is not too bad with your standard instanced battleground type things and some massive PVP areas..

Also Clans can build a keep to get extra bonuses in different things..

Sadly i was more of a ahrdcore PVP/sandbox type person so i moved on, but it did keep me playing for over a year..

AOC is well worth a try

The game's graphic style should appeal to you then, its gritty and the graphics are amazing. Most of the performance issues have been ironed  (including a recent engine update to the same engine that The Secret World is using) out so it should run really well on a new rig.

The huge download puts me off a little, and also the F2P model, it seems like it has many restrictions, If the game is good though I'll probably be willing to dish out the 35 bucks for the 3month subscription, hopefully GW2 will be out by then.

The F2P restrictions, aside from the class restrictions, are not really noticable until max level, when youll want to get better riding training and start doing Khitai content / raids / alternate advancement. The leveling process in AoC isnt that fast though, it will take you a while on your first character, so theres no reason to upgrade until you reach the endgame.

The game has lasting appeal, doing the faction grind in Khitai and mastering the Khitai dungeons will take you a fair while. The quest system is the traditional MMO type, although they are all well presented in the dialogue.

The combat here is supposed to be more dynamic, not your standing around casting spells or swinging a sword, how true does this hold on? How is the PvP in this game, balanced or imbalanced? Will I be smashing skills until I kill my target or is moving around rewarded?

The combat is more dynamic than traditional MMOs, its like TERA but less arcade style. Weapon combat is based on collision detection, although as a caster you will just be tab targetting and casting, although dodging and blocking is still important. You can dodge, active block and change your defence focus (which direction you block more damage from).

PvP isn't balanced. Last time I played Guardians were pretty overpowered, and before that it was Rangers. In fact, you will get absolutely destroyed in PvP repeatedly until you get the Rank 5 gear (which you can now buy outright in the cash shop... which is a bit annoying).

If you are fighting someone of equal rank, then yes, moving around and combo skipping is very important to winning. But there is a big gear disparity for PvP.

Are the quests entertaining? is this more of a group game than solo? Open world PvP or how does it work?

Mostly kill quests, the dialogue is good if you are into that, but the game is mostly about kicking ass and taking names, not doing fluff quests. Its definitely group focused at end game, and there are some great dungeons to do as you level, but you can solo the whole way to max level. There is open world PvP areas and castle seiges.

Its free to try. Its a good game and the end game dungeons are some of the most challenging and intricate that I have done in a MMO. I just left because I ran out of content, but there is plenty there for a new player.

Anyways leave a small review if you can, I'll be sure to check them out tomorrow while at work, would be a nice read ;)

Hey guys, thanks a lot for your input! I'm downloading the game and will give it a try when I get home from work :) I decided that I'll be playing this and Aion when it goes F2P on april 11, the graphics also seem good and the supposedly no restrictions are appealing. So with both of these I should be entertained until Gw2 I hope!

The king and the pawn go back to the same box at the end of the day.

I am going to give it a good run tonight... I just downloaded it again and finished installing, however, I had to run to work so in about 5 hours I will be heading home to see how my lvl 60 toon is. I haven't played since the month after release... hoping that it is in better shape than gold day.

Definitely give the game a spinn. It's one of the most obvious and best games in the MMO market. Many people have not tried it yet because of headless bashing from people that heard from people that it was bad at launch. Since the new dreamworld engine now finally got implemented in february I think the game again is mostly pure win. be sure to choose the right server. FFA PvP can be quite unforgiving and a bit of a harsh experience if you start with that. :P Good luck.

No...lol, just no.  First saying many haven't tried it is silly...that game had a MASSIVE launch.  Most people will tell you the same thing.  Game was a lot of fun, past level 20 was very buggy, easy grind so getting to end game was simple, but at end game was nothing to do.  So, everyone quite after the first 30 days.  Now they've added end game content...but they have no population, so...not much there.  I resubbed to check it out...its super dead...another dev launching a game that could have been good, but launched it incomplete...you just can't do that with todays demands.

I'll also say it's worth a try.  At least for a little while.

Is the game good, well no otherwise it wouldn't be f2p:)

Combat is novel for  a while but isn't that different from the standard 1 for big wallop, 2 for bigger wallop etc just here u need to hit a combo of arrow key first.  O.K. to start but i found it starting to feel a bit same old, same old after a while with a bit of an arkward interface.

I was on ta pvp server and seemed to be a bit too much of a gank fest just after it went f2p and haven't tried again since(noob island was quite good but after that got bored quite fast).  So didn't get to try anything balanced.

As said noob island is pretty good quest wise, with some group stuff in there.  But afterwards seemed very much a grind.

Also didn't think much of the cash shop model.  Some pay 2 win stuff in there for the low levels and seemed very restrictive to me.  Example you get a choice of 4 classes but only 2 chars slots(accross the board not per server) so only really 2 classes to try out unless u want to make more accounts.

What I'd recommend.  MMO wise dungeons and dragons online.  Combat is much better than aoc and there is more to keep you occupied.  Also a lot of group content as u get higher. Limited pvp though

Single player.  Try Dark Messiah of might and magic.  Got this for £2 of ebay brand new and played it through 3 times in under 6 months.   Has a more classless skill system and very good combat engine, bit short though and the skills are a quite limited   but the magic was very well done and supports several different playstyles.  Casting ice spells on steps and watching zombies slide down them was far too much fun:).

Been playing on and off for almost 4 years now, and I I can say its worth a try ;)

Tortage (lvl 1-20) is a singleplayer experience with MMO features meant to be different from the rest of the game, after lvl 20, only story quests and a few other selected gets voice overs. I think its 2-3 voiced quests for every lvl 20-80. Maybe more.

F2P can be played until lvl 80, but money restictions and bagspace might be a letdown, but I think that until mid 50s one can easy play on free unless one wants more freedom earlier, and just want to test it. Never been a F2P player myself, always premium.

Combat wise, choose a melee class, not a caster, and you will get a new experience. Many funny & interesting quests, especially the newest areas after release.

Play it, and enjoy it :)

A month ago I bought "Rise of the Godslayer" and "The Savage Coast of Turan", plus 60 days of premium account for just 29 Euros (it was a special offer though).

Haven't played since beta, and so far I've been having a ton of fun

Edit: It was 29 Euros, not 19 Euros.

Any new or returning player to WOW, send me a PM for some help getting started.

3/31/12 9:20:09 PM#18

AOC is free to play, which makes it slightly overpriced.

All kidding aside.. it is free, and if you enjoy messing around with new games.. the first 20 levels of AOC are fun and worth the download.  After that it will become a little more iffy.. but again.. it is free.. so play to level cap if you keep enjoying it.  I think DDO is a better free game with more options, there also isn´t anywhere near the split in the community as there is with AOC (f2p vs subscribers).. you can mingle more easily in DDO.

If you are an ex-wow player and want to come back. Scroll of Rez gives 7 free days, boost a character to 80 a realm and faction change. Send me PM for an invite. Only 1 per day available

Age of Conan is not worth playing.  If you feel alone in Skirym, you will really feel alone in age of conan, only one EU server has any population.  You disliked WoW's combat without giving it much time but WoW has the best combat system of any MMO on the market by a long shot and is one of the reasons so many people play it, it just feels more fluid and the abilities are balanced well for PvP and PvE.

The only thing Age of Conan does well is drive players away due to low quality PvE, boring repeatable quest is the whole end game,  The raids that work and get raided are three years old the other raids are buggy and never get done.  PvP is broken and there is not much of it anyway,  empty servers but no server merger planned.  This game hasn't had developers for over a year as the company has all manpower working on another MMO so trainees do all the game updating and besides breaking something to make the servers unplayable it is easy to tell that little effort gets put into development.  There are plenty of MMOs that people play and it depends on the nitche you are looking for, PvE, PvP, Fantasy, or whatever but AoC is mediocre on all levels as an MMO and even though Skirym has issues it is still a much better questing game and has a much bigger world than Age of Conan.

If you dislike Skyrim and WoW, chances are you don't like the RPG genre so maybe try something else. GW1 was popular because of the PvP arena and WoW is the only other MMO that copied it.

If an MMO is good people will play it, played MMOs are league of legends, WoW, SWTOR, Aion (very grindy PvP game), EvE, LOTRO, and GW 1.  All but SWTOR have been popular for a while now.

The combo system is a broken game mechanic that should of been striped out long ago.  Its a complete waste of 5 buttons on your keyboard that should be used for abilites.  or is it 7 butoons even?

Raiding is fun

Graphics are great

Zones are really well done

PvP combat feels sloppy and disorganized, kind of like watching bum fights

The only classes that feel someone right to play are the non combo classes so casters I guess. but I hate playing casters

For PVE the combo systems is passable but it fails hard in dynamic situations like PvP

This game could of been THE game to play if the combat mechanics werent so god awfull
