In EQ2 many quests, in game events, monsters and such depend upon day and night cycle.

That is just true for the old stuff, and they removed a lot of it when they revamped the start zones around q and freep. There still are some stuff, like those hunters in the wood in antonica but they are fewer and fewer.

On the other hand can certain weather spawn mobs in GW2 as well, like thunder can spawn lightning elementals and that is a new at least to me. :)

My favorite day/night cycle is MO. Truly dark. Even though most people turn up their gamma at night.

As far as day/night second favorite is EQ, then darkfall and then lotro.

Day/night cycles are awesome, but...... I dont know. I'm a coder and I can't see why it hard to code at all.

Its not a new feature. But at least its a feature in that game again. Too many AAA titles chose to not implement it in the last year and most of those who had day& night didnt  use it as a gameplay-relevant feature.

The sad thing is that its actually worth to tell if a game got it in these times.

The real big question about this cycle is:

Who comes 1st, the night or day?

Lineage had it better, even the gamma wasn't that much help back then. Elves had IR vision in a predator (bad Arnold movie) looking style that worked though. Other people had torches, or saw really badly.

I miss that in modern AAA mmos.

what IS cool is that some events (probably dealing with ghost ect) will only trigger at night and some only during the day. I love that they are actually USING the day/night cycle instead of just having it in the game.

FFXI is the only other game I can think of where certain mobs only came out at night and it made for some really fun moments.. the sun would be going down and eveyone in the entire zone would all mass run to the zone entrance because the insanely though ghosts and skeletons would come out at night.... great memories!

A nice change of pace from the constant day/night in other games and MMOs, or the day/night not being dynamic and only happening at certain parts of the story.

This is revolutionary because a lot of games are starting to get rid of the day/night, because it is much too hard to code. However, Arenanet sees the power of the day/night and even has certain events happen depending on the time of day.

Arenanet has proven that even the hardest thing to code in a game (MMO or singleplayer) is day/night and they've done it.

Nice job Arenanet. :D

thats cool!

is there also dynamic weather (miss sandstorms and stuff from the good ole swg days)?

As we said earlier, most of the old MMOs did the same including EQ and Lineage.

Night was darker than this in Lineage 1? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Saw-Kc2Ogk

I played L1 for a week or so, and dont remember the night that well other than it looked black and white.

Yes, and that can also spawn events.

Day / Night cycle is a great feature that adds immersion and realism, but it certainly is NOT innovative or revolutionary.

DAOC, Vanguard, LOTRO, Xyson and MO, as well as others I cant think of right now all have day night cycles if i recall correctly

Other new games coming out soon such as ArchAge and (I think) TSW have a day/night cycle too so GW2 is not alone there.

It was really black, but I played during the few months of the western beta, they might have chickened out later and made night lighter...

Heck, the noob zones had torches placed out so people could see. :)

Again, this weather effects and night/day change mechanic is nothing new.   At all.   Other games did it and other MMORPGs before it did it and many of them did it well.

The thing is, those mechanics have been forgotten and replaced with things to grab the attention of the newer generation of gamers that aren't impressed with playing a game that simply attempts to make them feel like they are in a living world.

Now, GW2 is bringing them back, and all the people who got into this genre post-WoW think it's a revolution.

Kind of cute, but unfortunately, it's still incorrect.

That is the ONE thing this MMO is revolutionary for? OMG, why did I click this thread?

I wish a mmorpg would have a change of season. But is most probably expecting to much. I have played once a strategie game, where they got a change of season, where a river froze and you could use it as passage.. or the other side of it, and the ice broke and your tanks/infantry/whatever broke through the ice.

Day/Night cycle are rather common, but neverthelss better than nothing, or better than not having it.

Hehehe fun thread.

It's obviously not revolutionary, but it's a nice feature and I'm glad it's in the game :).

Are you team Azeroth, team Tyria, or team Jacob?

Originally in Fallen Earth night was so dark you had to use a Flashlight/headlight (hit 'F', it still works) just to see. People hated it, so it was changed. Honestly even now I find the day/night cycle in FE to be a bit of a pain in the arse and would just as soon see it go the way of the dodo.
