Over on another thread Arachneus1 made the below comment,

"Honestly, if you do not want to represent your server to the #1 spot in the WvWvW ladder, then that is about as far as you are going to get for what your looking for"

and it got me to wondering.

I seem to recall reading somewhere that transfering between servers is going to be relatively easy/low cost?  Is anyone able to confirm that or is it still under NDA/unknown?

Knowing how "some" players are,  I wonder if server moves are easy and on demand if there will be a penchant for some players to migrate over to servers that are on the top end of the WvWvW ladder?

I do recall reading that there was some sort of cooling off period on the PVP side of the game with regards to transfers to reduce/eliminate this sort of behavior, but can't recall what it was. (perhaps a 3 week waiting period?)

I realize that any "true" GW2 player would never do this,  they'd be interested in acheiving glory on their own merits.

But fact is, I recall during Aion that people would frequently start rerolling on servers/sides that "won" more often than not, and I wonder if we'd see the same phenomenon in GW2, where players transfered or re-rolled just to be fighting with the better players on the winning servers.

And at the end of the day, does it matter in any way outside of bragging rights whether or not one is on the #1 server (i.e. are there any special rewards for being at the top of the ladder?)

If not then perhaps the incentive to swap won't be all that great.

And if all of this has already been addressed in another thread please forgive my ignorance and I would appreciate it if you could point me the way.

You chose a homeserver. So if you visit a different server, you still get the WvWvW buff from your homeserver (if there is any buff atm). Changing homeserver is not as quick to do.

who knows at this point, maybe server transfers will be a limited selection. We know they already will have a time delay for WvWvW.

They could always limit transerf choices by population, WvW ranking ect. Maybe they will.

There will always be the type that want to get into the best guilds and achieve #1 status. Recruitment resumes and requirements proving your skill and dedication for getting into raid guilds. I don't see why WvW would be any different. As you mentioned it happened with Aion.

While I have no care for it I do not think that sort of thing should be stopped. If that is how people want to play then they should be allowed to.

Unless a server wins over 90% of the time what will really be the point. There is no garantee that the server will win again next round. Also depending on how many servers there will be, server matchups will no doubt be in flux constantly for the mid range. Meaning you can't really predict which servers are better then the others. Think rock paper scissors in that respect.

The only time I will switch servers is when I find a community I feel at home at.

This is one thing I hope they charge buckets of money for.  Maybe a one time low cost switch within the first week or two of launch, and after that, you might as well just buy another box.  Otherwise, the cheesier members of the community will be server hopping twice a month.

I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.

So the whole chosing of your homeserver has been removed already? I read in some interview that you can switch servers all the time, but your original server will stay your 'homeserver' and thats the one you WvWvW for.

I believe in life before death... So dont forget to enjoy it while you still can.

Well, basically most people will stick to their server because of server pride..

And those that switch servers are mostly the people that want an easy ride and so will degrade the level of the top performing servers...

As long as your server has enough people to maximise the WvWvW game, youre all set.

I vaguely recall reading what the WvWvW buffs you get from winning were, and they weren't all that great an incentive to tempt a person to swap servers.

"For the Angel of Death spread his wings on the blast,
And breathed in the face of the foe as he passed:
And the eyes of the sleepers waxed deadly and chill,
And their hearts but once heaved, and for ever grew still!"

I have yet to see a game released that didn't have some exploits found quickly by players to cheat the system. I think the real question is how will they handle it when it happens. Will they just collect the money and allow it to happen or will they change the way they do business to make their playerbase happy.

Although not really a PVP player myself I know how bad it must feel when people are able to exploit a new system to hit max PVP rank or gear in a very short period of time.

What exactly does #1 in the rankings do for someone? Will those boards lose their value and have no meaning like the game rankings on some websites due to people finding ways to manipulate the system? I guess only time will tell and how a company handles cheaters and exploiters is huge for their reputation with gamers.

You can swap servers to play PvE content with friends at any time for free. Your Homeserver remains the same and any benefits of World v World or battles you participate in is for your Homeserver.

If you want to change Homeserver there's a fee and a timer preventing you from randomly switching to the highest rank one after the rankings are done at the end of the 2 week server match ups.

WvWvW just doesn't seem fun enough to where players would go through such an expense.  It is literally something you have to pay to do.

I don't know about the price stopping people. In WOW its 25$ and people do it all the time just to be on the same server as the number 1 guilds even when they are not in them. In WOW its actually kind of like being fined 25$ if you chose to play on a dead server just to play the game. Its a good chunk of money for a database change in their system and it surprises me that Rift does this for free.

I do think allowing server transfers kills server pride as there are always people coming and going but at 25$ per transfer I can see why its worth it to a developer to provide these services.

Here is the information so far:

- You do choose your home server.

- You can switch servers at any time for PvE.

- In RvRvR you must represent your home server. Benefits for your home server performing well in RvRvR are based on your home server, not what server you are playing on at the time for PvE.

- You can pay to switch home servers.

- RvRvR works on a 2 week rotating roster, you wont always be going up against the same realms, so the benefits of switching realms arent that great unless your realm is consistantly terrible.

Thanks for the information, I guess it will come down to how expensive it is to switch home servers.  Make it 25 bucks or something like that and I think it will disuade many folks.

I mean, there should be a way to switch your home server so a person can switch over to PVP with their friends or guildmates if the manage to start on a different server at the start.

I guess in the end, since your server will always be paired up against a competitive one, there's no advantage to switching except for the folks that love to brag about how they play on the most competitive or victorius server. (and you know those folks are out there, they're the same folks who always seem to be rooting for the winning Superbowl team year after year, even though different teams win)

Yeah I just saw the latest PvP post on their Facebook and saw an interesting line:

http://www.playerattack.com/news/2012/03/26/preview-guild-wars-2-world-vs-world-pc/

"Most other games that have a cross-server system choose to group certain servers together, usually based on the respective population levels, factional balances and the like. Guild Wars 2 is going to keep track of how well each server is doing in WvW and every two weeks will match them up accordingly. Thus, servers with a very active and successful WvW population will be matched against others who are similarly accomplished, rather than constantly smashing the same outmatched or outnumbered opponents."

Makes it sound even better, going to keep it competitive.

You might see a little bit of it early on I think, but with people spending money on certain servers for items and what not I think they'd be hard pressed to move and basically lose that stuff. We'll see..hopefully it's not an issue.

Early on people might do that, but I don't expect the servers to be completely balanced until at least a couple of months after launch anyway.

Since the population cap in the WvWvW instance is so low I don't think this is going to matter. For people to swap servers there would have to be a much larger cap than what they have. It really isn't very large compare to real open world PvP battles in other games.

I would like it to be much larger than it is now.
