Any fool can know. The point is to understand. |
Just thinking about GW2 and then all of a sudden this dawned on me. Why are there xp scrolls if not to facilitate grinding? Being a long time gw1 player I felt that xp scrolls in that game were more about getting rid of DP (death penalty for the uninitiated) rather than actual skill point grinding. However in GW2 with an increased level cap and a new leveling curve I have come to see the usefulness of these items and question whether or not these items will adversely affect the game world. Short term view - People who get scroll drops / buy scrolls will level faster. Power disparity in W v W. Mid term view - There will be a huge demand for these items and prices will be exorbitant. Long term view - These items will become useless to maxed chars and filter down through bank/alts/selling. Prices lower to a more reasonable level. This is all under the assumption that you can trade xp scrolls. I remember a screenshot of one but don't remember if it's BOP or BOE. Just food for thought. Edit: Upon further reflection I see I did not post the positives for scrolls. Leveling alts, helping friends get levels faster, a temporary helping hand to get you through a tough area, reward players who will enjoy risk - using it while hunting bigger game. Play for fun. Play to win. Play for perfection. Play with friends. Play in another world. Why do you play? |

If there are XP boosts, my guess is that they are there simply because people are dumb enough to buy them. |

I could see using them for an alt if I just really wanted level 80 asap for WvW.
Edit:
First time through the game though, no way. |

It'd be useful for alts, especially alts for the same race since there will probably be a lot of overlap on story instances as well as early game DE's. If you stopped playing for a week and all your friends have moved onto a higher level area, you might want to use one to catch up to them. |

XP Scrolls in GW1 count towards the Survivor title and maxing it out WITHOUT them is unthinkable. GW2 will obviously have a similar Displayable Title. |

Just because people may want to speed up the process does not mean its a grind. Also leveling is not really the grindy part in most games, its the gear treadmill after you get to max level and ANET has been very clear that there is none of that. The bonus to WvW is not all that important, at best it will only matter for the first month or so and even then it will balance out becuase it is assumed that every server will have a similar number of people using them. Leveling takes about 90 minutes per level for every level past 20 or so, thats a fine pace for me. That means getting to level 80 takes around 100 hours, which is more than fast enough for my tastes. |

I know I would have paid Blizzard to level a toon faster the second and third times around.
I'm sure people will appreciate the option as their number of toons increase. |

[citation needed] I follow a lot of articles and haven't read anything about XP scrolls. |

I'm entirely sure that GW2 will not have XP scrolls in microtransactions, because it's entirely against their philosophy on the game. How the adventure of leveling is just as awsome as the endgame is. Why have an item in microtransaction that quickens and cheapens the experience while leveling up? |

Originally posted by iller Guess I did the unthinkable, hurray for me! We really need separate forums for every newly launched game. There can be the anti-<MMO> one and there can be the 'what general discussion should be' one. All the lamenting can happen together where each can find solace in like minded can't-move-on-ers leaving the rest of us to actually move forward and discuss meaningful and relevant topics. |

In GW XP scrolls were useful to obtain skill points. This are endless and are used in crafting and buying skills. I cant find any use of XP boosts in GW2 with all the information we have |

Originally posted by Magnum2103 Loads of games offer bonus experience as a reward. That's common. What he's saying is that there are XP scrolls being sold on a cash shop. Really, until I see that direct from ArenaNet, he's talking out of his heiney and this whole thread is rendered null and void. There's no use arguing over something that someone has just invented which has no correlation with reality. |

Who cares? someone will always level faster than me anyways, I plan to take my time leveling up while exploring and enjoying the game. As long as leveling don't beecome a long boring grind like in games like RoM it doesn't bother me the least if all of you spend real life money on stuff like that. |

Some people want to level faster for whatever reason. Maybe they're a serious WvW'er and want to get a 'real' level 80 as soon as possible ect. Since the game isn't focused on a level treadmill as a means to get to 'good stuff', exp scrolls will mainly see use amongst people with less time and serious alt-a-holics :) I can't say i've ever been against exp boosts in any game really. |

People like to think they are lvling faster.. if they want to by xp scrolls let them. They aren't hurting anyone :)

The only people where XP scrolls make sense are those who have very little time to play, so their speed of progression is so slow it becomes a source of frustration. If your playing the game normally so that you fall into the range it was balanced for, your speed of progression is fast enough to be rewarding. At that point, progressing even faster doesn't gain you anything. At worst, you actually diminish your game experience since you rush through content without actually playing it. |
