Originally posted by Yamota The combat in EVE, much like in UO, isn't about the buttons you press during combat. It's about picking your battles wisely and then identifying and countering your oppenents' strengths and weaknesses. The battle started when you were docked, where you chose the ship and modules you were going to take to battle, so while you may only have 4-5 buttons you are pressing during combat, you chose them from a rather large selection (to avoid sematics and nonsense number quibbling I won't even touch the number of combinations and ships) based on what your goals, strengths and team needs are for your excursion.
filmoret: One thing I have never figured out is why the game devs hardly ever fix simple problems that arise. It is like they don't care about the pvp community. Nitth: What makes you so sure its a simple fix? filmoret: Because most of them are. Sometimes its just changing a number in a code string other times its creating a few variables. However none of them should take over a few hours of coding. |

Originally posted by Kuro1n Excellent video. Really shows the tactics involved in this game. SP are irellevant past a certain point. Solo guy was able to take out 3 ships in a gang, described the mistake he made that allowed an enemy to get closer to him while fighting the others, and then got popped before warping his pod out. Still, wreaked a little havoc all by his lonesome against a group. |

Originally posted by Sheista and not a spreadsheet in sight.. one of the annoying accusations often levelled at Eve is that its a spreadsheet game, about the only time a spreadsheet program would be handy in Eve is if your an industrial and you have to juggle a lot of resources, compare prices in different regions, and boring things like that. |

The PvP in EVE is much like combat in real-life. Hours upon hours of boring preparation, menial tasks and planning combined with few minutes of pure terror and excitement (adrenaline rush). "The person who experiences greatness must have a feeling for the myth he is in." |

Get into a group of pilots that you can associate yourself with and the game takes on a whole new meaning when your has a purpose. If you're really interested in getting into the meat and potatos of nullsec warfare - send me a message - I happen to recruit for my Corp. |

I do not enjoy the combat in eve, but I would hardly describe it as the OP does. My issue with the combat is that for small scale engagements a good pilot/fc will know who is going to win a fight without engaging. This leads to a whole lot of no fighting in my experience.
While I find large scale battles exciting, they are not exactly interesting from the individual pilots perspective.
I have seen many players accurately asses the combat when they say "If it is a fair fight, you're doing it wrong." The problem is, unfair fights are not fun or interesting. The only interesting aspect of it for me is the planning and the luring pilots to engage when they shouldn't.
As someone who could not possibly FC, the only things I really enjoy about the combat are planning my fit and flying with mates. I have a good time trying to come up with interesting traps, but finding willing accomplices is usually an issue. |

Originally posted by ironhelix Someone who actually knows what it's about. Eve isn't for everyone. Combat isn't on-demand like todays MMO's. You CAN find combat, in one way or another, pretty easily but to get really good combat usually takes loads of setup, logistics and planning. I played Eve in some of the higher echelons of combat and I've had some of the most heart pounding and glorious combat in any MMO. |

I think their latest analogy that better describes combat in eve is related to Magic : The gathering
When you bring a ship to a fight in eve its more like bringing a deck of cards that you have customised. And your fleet is a bigger deck comprised of even more customisation. Not to mention each pilots physical skillpoints and actual experience.
As such, the combat situations you find yourself in, can often be similar....... but never the same! |
