Yes instead support companies like game-stop who also rip customers off for a profit.. The used game market is a racket.

I have a feeling that this year we will see a lot  online game close and not just from EA. Before you could kinda skate by  with less than profitable numbers; now it's sink or swim.

This sword here at my side dont act the way it should
Keeps calling me its master, but I feel like its slave
Hauling me faster and faster to an early, early grave
And it howls! it howls like hell!

What is wrong with buying fun games from EA?

I played Dead Space, Dead Space 2, ME Infiltrator .. all good games. No regret of giving EA my money.

If you want to fund companies that pull the sort of stunts that EA does--and shutting down online games soon after release is far from the worst that EA has done--then it's your money, not mine.  But don't act surprised when they take that as you being okay with such schemes.  And don't complain when they decide to make some game you bought break a year after release unless you buy additional DLC for it, or whatever dastardly scheme that they'll come up with next.  Because you knew going in that EA would have no qualms about pulling shady stunts that they think will make them more money in the short term, and you were fine with it.

Also, put on the tin foil hat day.  I will put mine on for the thread.  Back in the day, you bought a game and you could keep playing it.  Heck, last year I played wizardry and pool of radiance (ssi gold box) using dosbox.  With all this online requirements to prevent stealing, that wouldn't be possible.  So it's as if we are renting a game from blockbuster.  We need to get a statement up front as to how long they will support a game.

Screw EA.

It's not a racket.  If I had an EBay account with a high rating and the time and desire to buy and sell games directly I could.  When I use Gamestop to do my used game trading, they simply profit from my laziness.  And there is nothing wrong with that, it's the basis of most commerce.  It's not like you're going to starve to death if you don't get that two year old XBox game for $10 instead of $20.

And this is coming from a socialist, in case you couldn't tell by my sig.

I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.

I'm sorry that you apparently think Gamestop is the only way to buy and sell used games. I prefer Craigslist, e-bay,  and Goozex.com myself.

And the only ones Gamestop are ripping off are those who allow them to. I only buy older  used games from Gamestop when they're dirt cheap, not at launch when they're only $5 less than new.

Is the used car market a racket too? What racket am I in if I sell my old tools? Or a used television? How about when i sell my used cd's or dvd movies, what racket am I in then?

Anti-used game people are hilarious in their arguments. Somehow, you guys think video games are special compared to every other thing in the world that gets sold used every day without complaint.

Sometimes there are things in life that are more important than a few dozen hours of entertainment.

I have been banning EA for a few years now.  At some point gamers are going to have to understand that being a better consumer is a much better way of getting better games than pissing and moaning on an internet forum.  We are capitalists, like it or not, and money is what drives this industry right off the cliff.

They shut down mostly the F2P IPAD ones as far as I can tell so not sure what the issue is.

EA produces some awesome games though like Alice: Madness Returns (best 'game is art' example other than Journey/Flower), Dead Space, FIFA. I have no problem giving them my money; esp if it has 'Made by Bioware' logo.

There was a comment by an Apple executive, 'people are more concerned about their iphone not working than working conditions in china'. It isn't very PC but I have to agree with it since yes, I am concerned more about my Iphone.

Wonder why there seems to be more haters on the internet?

Read this by an actual marketing guy to find out why.

MMO sandbox games are as exciting as watching paint dry.

You forgot not only Madden, but my favorite enjoyment of all....Michigan Wolverine college football which is represented in the NCAA series.

Throw in BW games, and a number of other titles they produce, and folks can wail all they want about EA. I know I will buy the games that interest me regardless of who it is made by.

Asking Devs to make AAA sandbox titles is like trying to get fine dining on a McDonalds dollar menu budget.

So is hating EA the new hip thing to do nowdays?

At least EA give players dedicated servers to play on instead of poor quality peer to peer ones.

I see nothing wrong with shutting game servers down that very few people play on. It called smart business, you don't keep running servers for games barely anyone plays anymore.

EA does some really stupid stuff that I don't like (day 1 DLC) but trying to bash them for shutting down game servers is pathetic.

i find uo and daoc too old for me to play them with cluncky mechanics and dated graphics, but EA would be #1 in stupidity if they shut down warhammer knowing that game can be a huge success going free to play with cash shop (balanced cash shop)

I'm not sure EA would ever adopt a F2P.   They have something with Warhammer...   The Eternal Trial or some such...    It caps at 10.    When I read that, I just moved on...    Most MMOs are pretty bland and childishly easy to level 10.     Also, even the free-trial isn't working.  They're in the process of 'free server transfers' for what I presume is the next round of server closures.

EA clearly states in the single player games you buy that have online they do not guaranteed online play past 1 year of release.   Read the back of madden, nba live, nhl, fifa all of them say this including need for speeds.

You miss the point.   EA would rather do nothing positive if, somehow, it meant that someone, somewhere might enjoy something they did without giving them their pound of flesh....    Their pathological desire to provide the least amount of goods and services for the most amount of money does in more companies than you can shake a stick it.

It is a bad, short-sighted business practice.

Which is why I don't buy them.   They give you hardly any credit for what you turn in, then hit you for close to retail.   It's bull.

Rather than buy used, I just wait until they hit bargain bin or some such.   I don't have to play a game on immediate release.  In fact, I find it's better to let others waste $60 on crap games like DA2.

EA has become increasingly harder to avoid because they buy good studios and drain the life out of them. I lost respect for EA when they made the most scruplous act I've seen in gaming buy buying the football licenses for some 20 years, making other football studios impossible to make real nfl games.  They couldn't beat the competition so they bought up the material needed buy their competitor.

Since EA has bought Bioware, we've gotten a lackluster DA2, a by the numbers Old Republic, and a ME3 game that was rushed out before an ending was completed.

I don't care mucha bout the Shutting down part of this thread.  The games in that list look to be exactly as described by EA... DEAD.  No one playing them.

As for the rest, the operation 10 dollar bull$hit...

As much as I hate EA and I know they're trying to steal every penny from customers and offer little in return (most games they publish are trash)...  It is true, hosted online services cost money.

A better question to ask is, will GameStop be selling games that require this 10 dollar card for LESS money now?  Or will they still be full price + 10 dollars?

Hopefully people who play these games will stand up and refuse to pay full used price when they have to drop another 10 on top!

How is it short sighted to divert their resources from aspects of games very few people enjoy to other projects that will effect way more people? It's just the logical thing to do and I bet if Valve did something like this no one would say anything.

The irony here is a lot of people stating how people should never support these terrible mega-gaming-conglomerate...since they do put profits ahead of passion and quility..and customers....

And how many indy mmorpg gaming companies shutdown their passion projects that were focued on the community and the gamers who play them?

Point is, theres a lot more indy gaming companies out there that desperatly need funding and support.  Problem is these people who hate SOE/EA/ECT wont spend a dime on a game that wasnt funded with millions of dollars or made use of a 100 man development team...something only the conglomerates can afford.

So my question is...do/will any of you put your mone where their mouth is and support (enjoy?) a game thats buggier and a work in progress because its made as a passion project with the customers intrests first?  Or will we laugh at their funny fail attempt to compete with the conglomerates?

I see a lot more people who say they dislike the big studios but when it all comes down to it they wont spend a dime on an indy project that may have grown into a good sized studio that actually cared about the players who made them big (something those conglomerates lost about 30 mergers ago)

Just sayin...lot of these companies are or are borderline bankrupt because we just want that new shiny themepark that your gonna hate in 30 days anyway, and whos company is going to dumb it down for more first time mmorpgers ect....and offer more ways to suck you wallet dry ect.

*edit* was funcom the only indy company to make it big and stay independent?  i mean that company was built off anarchy online...and look at how many people hate them for their imperfections...i know theres got to be more success stories of indy companies making it big and not merging with a conglomorate

Yes, youth needs a crusade and hating a game company that everyone else is demonizing is the cool thing to do.  Most people follow suit rather quickly just like people who say they like to dress different.  They end up so different they are just like everyone else.

Most people can't see beyond their own noses and are so quick to judge a for-profit company for doing what it must, make money.  Then, they claim that because they are making money in {x} way, they are greedy no good son's a bitches with little more thought and logic used apart from emotional responses.  Even giving an opinion to the contrary will likely call down the holy avengers who crusade against the practices they love to hate even though they are giving their money to the types of companies they so viciously lambaste on the forums every.
