I really feel that OP's assumption is somewhat correct. Look at the current trend with gaming in general. Bioware has done the okie doke on people with ME3 but they sold record amounts of the game anyway. Diablo 3 is going to have a real money AH and yet people are slobbering in anticipation for it. Anet is seeing all of the hype over this game and I am sure they will capitalize on it somehow. Do you really think they care for their customers more than they do the almighty dollar?! I can't say it won't ever happen, because I honestly thought I would never see guild wars 2 have an official forum, however, I find it highly unlikely. Guild Wars has been around since April 28, 2005 and it is still populated and no cash shop implemented. Part of the reason I believe is the infrastructure. Now, obviously I have no proof of this numberswise, but I'm going by the eye-test. Guild Wars released 3 stand-alone titles and 1 expansion pack from April 2005 to August 2007. The amount of purchases of these alone is a hefty cashload. Also, I, along with most people I know that still play, have bought cosmetic armor, more character slots, etc. Again, more income. I believe the new model is to "borrow" from Warcraft and sell cosmetic items in the cash shop, I mean seriously, everytime Blizzard unleashes a new $25 mount, there's a million of them flying around. It's bananas. B-a-n-a-n-a-s. TLDR:: Plenty of ways you can make $$ as a developer without selling "get-aheads" in the cash shop. |

While I agree that the OP is making some big assumptions, he's not completely off in his logic. Those servers are only going to stay lit up so long from box sales revenue. The game is going to be reliant on either consistant box sales, large quantities of cash shop sales, or leaning heavily on the library of other NCsoft (the publisher, for those that aren't aware) games that are Pay2Play, a library of games that are slowly switching to the hybrid sub/f2p model. If the launch numbers aren't up to expectations, which given many peoples budgets combined with the number a big name games that have recently launched or are about to, is a distinct possibility, then I could see ANet (at the behest of NCsoft) dropping smaller content packs more regularly and sooner than expected. Now, I seriously doubt that these content packs would be of the same scope as the GW1 expansions, and therefore would be cheaper, say in the $20-$25 range. Those servers are going to require a steady stream of income to stay running, no matter where that income comes from. And in all reality, it's all going to boil down to Anet getting out of the blocks with a really stellar launch. |

Originally posted by bigsmiff Who said that aggressive CS is the way to make the most money? As you have probably noticed, it leaves bad taste and results in a lot of people quitting the game, which doesn't really work for B2P game that relies on expansion sales. Have you considered the possibility that fluff CS is actually the most profitable option for B2P model, and going more than fluff will actually net them less income? |

I know it long time ago that gw2 will be same old one in new clothes, specially now when i know that Elder Oblivion goes online i cant see a reason to buy this game. And yes it is normal to earn money for your hard work, why you wonder about that- do you work for free or what? |

How do I run out fo content in -competitive- PvP? Did Starcraft ran out of content? Did CS ran out of content? How do I run out of content in WvWvW when every 2 weeks I get to face new people in huge territory control battles? Yes, sure, the PvE content will most likely be cleared by some noli-... hardcore players within month or two, but tell me how it's different in subscription based MMOs? Even the supposedly "best end game pve" MMO - WoW get's raids half cleared even before they hit live server, and who says I need to be "first" to do it? I don't have to, there is no major benefit of me rushing through the content, I can do PvP as soon as I'm done with intro/tutorial section. |
