I'm not impressed with the implementation of mounts in mmorpgs. I think GW2 will be overall better without them. I don't know, but they sorta suit a sandbox world more, horses and the upkeep of them eg back in the day a horse cost a lot and that's why knights had them and few peasants did and losing such would be a big economic loss or russling them a suitably outlaw thing etc... In themepark mounts boil down to = SPEED I think devs prefer to keep movement speed constant (below a certain max) for map sizes between events ie not 2 gears to design DEs and WvWvW as well as lower than MOUNT SPEED so that players may possibly end up exploring off the straightest path from A-B also but also using insta travel points can be planned how that affects travel/timing between localities... To get from A-B where it's a distance over a certain length, as ppl said they have instant travel for that problem of inconvenience which is better possibly at convenience than mounts? So by using INSTA travel and removing faster speed you solve both problems more effectively is my best attempt to understand why NO Mounts = Better game. 1. Convenience over longer distances 2. Planning player movements timing/between localities to work with DEs or WvWvW - distribution of content and player density in/out of a locality? 3. More social without mounts zipping at speed?

You dont need grassy landscapes because there's snowy ones already. Guess what, some people like grassy locations more than snowy ones.
It's no secret that blizzard makes millions by adding vanity mounts in their store. It's because people love mounts, a simple fact. Heck, they added free mount to the "get back one of your friends to play the game again" campaign, I doubt they added the mount reward because people hate mounts. |

Originally posted by Ecoces It's not really hate, it's more of dislike, at least in my case. The problem is, in majority of recent MMOs mounts served no function other than looks/speed boost, and speed boost can always be achieved by other means than mounts. If a developer owuld actually bother to make mounts matter, by either designing a mounted combat system or added some additional functionality to those mounts I'd be perfectly fine with them. With GW2 however, since You can teleport between discovered waypoints there is absolutley no point to have another fast travel option around. As far as issues with mounts being there for just vanity: hit boxes, blocking NPCs, blocking view, interfering with mobs (especially since GW2 combat is mostly built around directional/ground target combat rather than tab-target). Rather than thinking how mounts broke MMOs tho, think how they improved them. Because among AAA titles I can't find a single example of mounts actually improving the experience. |

like you said "who needs Maces ... you have swords" well i like using maces and I like having a "glorified speed buff with a cool skin". |

Cash shop availability... Nag, 60% speed...................10 bucks Workhorse, 90% speed.......30 bucks Race horse, 110% speed....50 bucks Spiked War Race Horse......75 bucks Mount armor (Spiked War Race Horse only)....20 bucks

so the other BS excuse is "hey lets remove something because it can cause griefing" man if developers listen to that philosophy i would hate to see what else would be removed. |

Mount's are just speed buffs anyway. I'm sure they will add flight sooner or later, maybe we will get jetpacks for certain missions. I can live with using stargates or whatever the latest fashion is to move around. The lack of subscription fee will be the main incentive. ![]() |

Originally posted by Ecoces It's gamebreaking in that the content is not the standard kill ten rats/turnin system of questing, the world is alive with events all the time and they want you to explore and experience the world, having a mount that goes 210% speed or that flies over the top of the world will break the game in that it will take you away from content while you are running and will allow for the easy completion of jump puzzles and other puzzles in game.. Can't imagine why people can't conceive the simplest of things on these forums. Oh and I just love the idiots who are still holding onto the notion that the store is going to have something more then clothes and mini pets. Read much people? Didn't think so.... |

Mounts would not ruin GW2. I don't think that not having mounts was a matter of principle. it's just a feature that they didn't think was necessary so they didn't implement it. Personally, mounts fall pretty low on my wish list. They are a nice gimmick...but they are largely cosmetic. It's not necessary to have mounts to give a speed buff if that's what needs to be done (see, spirit of the wolf from EQ, or sprint from SWTOR). I kind of see mounts on the same level as "flowing cloaks," cool if you have them, but not really a big deal. I think there are a lot of folks here that grossly inflate the importance of mounts...but that's just my opinion. I would LOVE to see mounts in GW2 implemented in a less gimmicky way. For example, if mounts were treated as a "weapon" that replaced your first five skills and could be used tactically in PvE and WvW. Are you team Azeroth, team Tyria, or team Jacob? |

Originally posted by lykan2428 Interesting, you are right, it seems they have removed the line after people went crazy over the change in wording. Whatever, there is a cash shop, selling cosmetical items, transmutation stones, etc. similar to the GW1 store. They haven't officially announced all the item categories it's going to have, only that they won't sell items that give a power advantage. |

Originally posted by Creslin321 Agreed, wouldn't it be much better to make a mount an actual in game thing. That when mounted becomes a battlehorse with it's own skill and health bars. For travel it should have limited duration and if killed in battle, you have to actually buy another mount. That's why I agree with mounts being an inflated thing, it has no sense of value or worth, it's a gimmick item. |

if i am running past content ... then i didn't want to do it anyway so whats the difference if i zoom past it a bit faster? |

Originally posted by Distopia There was a change in the wording, phrasing it more general than just cosmetic items, basically including convenience items as well. The line blurrs a bit when you say 'advantage'. They still exclude raw power items like better weapons or gear, but they might sell convenience stuff like XP scrolls. For some people that's a big advantage. |

Originally posted by Creslin321 I have to agree. While I am a mount hoarder in WoW, I never really missed them in games like AC1 and DAoC (I played before they added mounts). Fast travel seems to be the mount and "taxi" replacement in GW2, and I think it's a perfectly reasonable solution. If they added mounted combat later on, that would be fine too, so long as it doesn't become a necessity. |

Originally posted by Ecoces But maces in gw2 are far different from swords compared to other games and I never said I didn't like mounts but just that to me they often feel lackluster. The game has already been designed based on no mounts so that the waypoints are well divided and not too far to be reached on foot. I don't care if they put mounts in at all, I just hope they won't be simple speed buffs but something more like they made swords vs maces different. |

Originally posted by Creslin321 I agree. If ArenaNet wants to implement mounts in the future then I wouldn't mind them taking the time to implement them, so that they are more than just cosmetic speed buffs and actually have an impact in-combat. Mounted-lancers ,archers and riflemen would be a perfect addition to WvW. Mounted Expansion anyone? |
