I don't play much games.

I rather pick few carefully and then usually stick to them for long.  That's especially true with mmorpg's.

Anyway

MMO & MMORPG wise :

Currently:

- nothing - no interesting games with business model I can stomach (too many microtransactions out there)

Longest played / Best past games:

- UO

- SWG

- Lotro (went to shit in last years, f2p transition just speeded it up).

- EvE Online

Single player - mostly STRATEGIES and SP RPG games. Sometimes  fps and rts but that's rare.

Played in last year or so:

-  Civilization IV

-  Football Manager 2012

- Skyrim

- Warcraft 3 TFT

Just finished playing:

- Kingdom of Amalur - game IS SERIOUSLY BAD.  Overall ideas are well bearable ,but totally screwed game design (game gets stupidly easy and repetetive after lvl 10 , + too streamlined and simplicized + lack of any challange from lvl 10-15 upward even on hard from level 15-20 game is totally faceroll , when first few levels can be hard). Reeks of badly designed button masher and was advertised as crpg which it is not.  + quests like taken from usual mmorpg(go kill 10 bandits) put in single player game - AWFUL.

Best past single player games:

- Fallout 1 & Fallout 2   (Fallout Tactics and Fallout 3 were bad / average)

- Baldur's Gate 1 & 2

- Civilization 2 & 4

- Heroes of Might and Magic II , III and V

- Master of Orion 2

- Tycoon games , Sim City ,

- Unreal Tournament

+ Flashback : Quest for Identity

Prefer to pick games that are diverse, cheap, "lite", interesting gameplay & design

  • dos-box: dungeon keeper
  • iOS: async. corp, league of evil, fifa12, Traveller AR (shortly)
  • indie: unepic, spelunky, spacechem, zombie atom smasher etc
  • (PC main: "GW2" & EvE (both eventually) the next list.)

I'm sorta against consoles though they work for others & generally new PC titles compared to what else is already available don't consider cost-effective. For mmorpgs, looking for more niche, more world interactions...

I basically play anything that isn't a sports or racing title released on PC.  FPSes, RPGs, and MMORPGs tend to eat up most of my time.

Im in the same boat as elikal and just1.*huggle both of them*

I play just about all kinds of games with the exception of sports. For some reason the only sports games i get into are the wacky ones like nba street in gamecube (KICK TO NUTS FTW!) and the mario sports mix o.o

Umm...but yeah my favorite genre tends to be sim games. Majesty 1( 2 sucks) dungeon keepers, dwarf fortress etc keeps me coming back for more all the time.

Tbh i dont think ill ever be able to strictly stick to a mmo. Ill always end up going to other games like mvc3, little big planet, lil kings story, tactics ogre, disgaea, mario, sonic, pso, modnation racing, terraria, gta, saints row, metroid, dragon quest, etc.

Been around awhile. Usually play single player games I have like Dragon Age, Skyrim, and Civ IV with many mods.  MMO's - currently playing EVE... but just discovered that they are trying to reverse engineer ShadowBane and that it is in closed Beta. No eta of anything else.. but that is a game I would enjoy returning to.  The current games coming out are ok but too soloable for even myself and I like solo play.  I think that there should be challenging games for those who like that and easy games for those who either cannot do well in a challenging game or can not devote a lot of time to them.  Not all games should be easy, however much those who like easy games whine.  There should be hard.. the mobs chase you down and kill you or the gankers are loose or  it is war kind of games.  There is a market for them, but the problem is those who want to play every game and want them to be easy whine. Just my opinion.  ShadowBane's revival would be a nice start.

Currently bored with MMO's.

I'm another one of those that will play about anything except for sports games an will on occasion play racing games(nfs carbon/grid). Always been a huge fan of shooters(since quake/tribes/HL1) and always will. While I am the type that loves to explore and have freedom to create and play a character my way and be immersed, I will not accept substandard or dull combat. Loved the freedom of choices of how to play in EvE,DF, and SWG but the combat made me quit. Not to say that combat is the only part of MMOs I like it just that it needs to be there and be well done. Neocron was the only one that stuck the balance of everything I wanted and I'm fortunate to have played it in it's prime.

With that said, I have ended up playing many more themepark mmos even though they don't fill in the bubbles of All My Favorite Features list, they fill more than sandboxes do in the end. But I'm played enough of these and they don't seem to improve in the ways I like. I'm about at the end of themepark MMORPGs and ToR will likely be me last.

Edit: Ment to say that I go through/aternate on 0-2 MMO in a year typically only playing one at time if any. Singleplayer games about 10 new releases and a few revisits to old classics. Will play console games but only with friends or family.

Let's build the ultimate MMO 1 feature at a time

Correcting wrongs on the Internet...

3/11/12 6:40:40 AM#30

I play MMORPGs, RPGs (action and regular), CORPGs, racing games (arcade and simulation), sports games, FPSs (tactical and fast-paced), real-time and turn-based strategy games, economy simulators and the sort, other simulators (more on the lite side) both on PC and Xbox360.

I don't care about the genre or style that much. Or for the setting as long as the game is good. That the moment to moment fun factor is kept high and everything works as they were inteded.

The type of games I don't like are JRPGs and fighting games (the Tekken, Mortal Kombat kind). And I tend to pick street/track racing games over rally games.

I prefer the console controller for all the games where I have to fly or drive and  for sports games. I don't care if my RPGs or FPSs are on the console or PC although I dislike bad console-to-PC port as much as the next guy. Strategy games are generally for PC only although Kingdom Under Fire was very, very good.

On top of that, I love competitive E-sport PvP in pretty much any game that is out there. I have been succesful in E-sports in the past and I love to master new games and test my skills. I love the challenge, the chance to improve and the tension and drama in high-profile, close matches.

Used to be a big fan of single player RPG games for the PC back in the 80's and 90's but since the turn of the century it's pretty much been nothing but MMORPG's for me.

I do try an occasional single player title from time to time, most recently Skyrim, but between the fact they lack the company of others they also lack the charm of the old school titles. MMO's aren't the only genre to have suffered a decline over the years. (Bring me back my damn graph paper!)

As for consoles, those are something that my children play games on, I'm afraid I was too old to be part of that evolution of electronic gaming. (But I did play games on mainframes back in the 70's)

No, you're not alone.  I usually play one game at a time.  I'll throw in some NES/SNES emulator games too for fun.

Most people don't get married to a single game. Even many of the truly dedicated players have a small stable of alternates that they regularly play.

MMO sandbox games are as exciting as watching paint dry.

This.

As indicated in Op, I go thru about 10 new SP games per yr. This is besides games I go back n replay.  The Mass Effect series I have played thru 8 or more times each....probably 400 or 500 hrs worth. Which is trivial compared to Marvel Ultimate Alliance 1. That game was mega addictive to me, as even though you knock out all acheievements, you can keep replaying to try to fill out all powers on all characters. I finally gave up after like 8 or 9 months of playing daily.

I currently have 52.2k gamerscore on my 360 profile(base game is worht 1k for all acheivements, plus some extra for DLC). My library is around 100 360 games. Some I dont like, and go right back to the shelf in the  5 minutes it takes me to remember why I didnt like it the first time. Lego Indiana Jones 2 and Enslaved are prime examples. Others because they give me the damn willies.....Dead Rising 1/2, Dead Space 1/2, and Alan Wake are prime examples. Why did I buy them in the first place? Ask the vicodins.

Others hang around until I get a lull in new game releases, and then go back to finish them.  I try to complete each new game when first purchased, even if I dont knock out all acheivements. Easy to do if a month only has one new game you buy, but rough when a few titles ship in the same month.

After 5 yrs of EQ, I just cant hang with the same game more than a few weeks. Some may last longer, but you can bet I will be moving on to something else no matter how much of a grip a game appears to have. It doesnt mean I wont play a game here n there....I simply wont stick with one.

Asking Devs to make AAA sandbox titles is like trying to get fine dining on a McDonalds dollar menu budget.

I mainly play MMO, and RTS stuff...I use to play more sports/action stuff on like a console, but not so much anymore...Little bit of madden/MMA stuff here and there...Use to love the EA NHL games too.

I prefer Hybrid/Sandbox type mmos: UO, EQ, DAoC, Vanguard, SWG (yes, it needed work/balancing, not a NGE).  Looking forward to GW2, TSW, EQNext (depends when I get more info), ArcheAge, WoD (single race is kinda disappointing)...

I like the Starcraft, Warcraft, Civ type games (play a lot of others also, but stuff like this).

I also like first person shooter stuff, but I have a PS3, and everyone I want to play with has a Xbox360, so I may buy one sometime.

When it comes to MMOs, I generally only play 1 at a time, I may do 2 when GW2/TSW comes out, but it is hard for me to play more than 1 mmo at a time...I play other games while I play it, but usually only 1 mmo.

I like my fighting games 1v1 - Capcom 2D fighters, Virtua Fighter series
My action/adventure games spg console - Metroid, Zelda, Ninja Gaiden
And my mmos non-combat or as close to sandbox as I can - crafting, trading, roleplaying

I also religiously scour and play indie games.

Let's see what's currently installed:

MMOs:    DC Universe Online, Wakfu, Lord of the Rings Online, EQ2, STO, Mabinogi, Perfect World, Dragon Nest

Single Player:  ME1 (bargain bin), ME2 (bargain bin), Minecraft, Skyrim, Oblivion, Morrowind, Rail Road Tycoon II, Sims2 (all non-stuff packs), Medival War, Medieval War II, Shogun 2, Rome Total War, Fallout 3, Fallout NV, Civ IV, Civ V, Terraria, X3 Reunion, Tachyon the Fringe, Deus Ex and XCom UFO Defense (Dos Box).

Co-op:  TF2,  Left for Dead 2

Quite a few of these games are games I only play with my daughter or friends -- Minecraft, Terraria, Wakfu, Mabinogi, Dragon Nest, Pefect World, Team Fortress 2, Left for Dead 2 -- and I won't play them on my own as they're not otherwise captivating.

Except the co-op shooters above, I don't currently play shooters.   I stopped somewhere around Doom 3 which I did not finish.  I also used to play Madden but I thought the franchise mode sucked and playing it against the computer was boring, so I don't.

That is more games than I could complete in a yr, and I am home 24/7 due to disability.

As you mentioned..... you dont actually play a number of those except when certain conditions exist. As stated in OP, I go thru about 10 to 12 new games per yr(when I say new almost all are new release, but some could be used or "bargain bin" as you stated.....but all are games I have never played before), besides any repeat playthrus on prior completed games. Running thru my old copy of Baldurs Gate or Heroes of Might n Magic isnt the same as a new game purchase, as they were purchased & completed in prior yrs.

So on avg, how many new games do you go thru per yr? Or do you simply keep playing your older games, and checking out a few FTP MMO's.....maybe grabbing  game or two per yr?  Which if you have young kids, is probably about all you can do.....been there and done that. Lean yrs for sure, but makes ya a man to stand by your kids. :)

FYI the reason for this thread is to check who is actually enjoying the games being produced these days, and what is actually liked by forum users.

I don't really 'go through per year' very many games because I look for long-term playability/replayability as a primary concern.   Only the CRPGs tend to get used up, the rest are 'replayable situation games.'

I'm still on my second-play through on Skyrim, third on Oblivion and while I have probaby put in 500+ hours over the years in Morrowind, have never finished it...   I have yet to get more than half-way through FO:NV as I tend to wander off story then decide 'hey, this other kind of character would be cool...' and start over...  (45 hours total game play and I've made it to Vegas 3 times now...)    OTOH, I played through FO3 twice.   Despite the jerk-off ending (which they changed and I haven't played.)

Most of my games are old.   I've had them for years and years.   Last year, I bought the two ME games bargain bin.   They took 60-hours between the two of them to complete and considering what I've read of ME3, I'll need to wait a year for that bargain bin sale.   I bought Skyrim and played it for 136 hours since I bought it 11/11/11.

But look at the rest of my list.  Tachyon is 12-years-old.   Rail Road Tychoon II is 14 years old.   Civilization IV is 5 years old, Civ V is 2 years old.   Shogun 2 is a year old.  The other Total War games are even older, some were released a decade ago and the newest, until Shogun, was Medieval II which was released in 2006..

I put in 8-hours into Wakfu with my daughter this weekend.   I put 6 into DCUO.   Didn't play any other games.   (I also don't watch TV.   I have one.  It's for the consoles that my wife and daughters use.)    I might have played more, but I have a torn rotator cuff and it really bothers me sometimes.

And while I'm not, but for the rotator cuff, disabled.   I am retired.   And there are a lot of other time-wasters I don't do.  For example, as I mentioned earlier, I don't watch TV.   It's passive and bores the hell out of me.    My in-the-home entertainment is games and reading.    My out of the home entertainment runs towards the arts and hiking/nature walks.

I'm not sure. So far,the only games I play are Assassin's Creed and Final Fantasy series. I'm more into MMOs/MMORPGs. I have a tendency to look for real player interaction rather than AI interaction.

I'm no gamer like some are.  I don't even own a console.  I buy maybe 10 to 15 games a decade, not per year.

Went through a FPS phase starting with Wolf3D and Doom, up to Q3A.  Played a bunch using id Software's engines, games like Heretic II.  A few others like the original Unreal and Half-Life.

Coop RPG LAN party games in the early to mid 2000s.  Neverwinter Nights and Dungeon Siege are two main games from this era.  Also got into SP Morrowind and Oblivion.

Since starting in MMORPGs around 2006 or so with WoW, I play them almost exclusively.  I still play Morrowind and Oblivion on occasion.  Not much else.

After years of well mostly mmorpg and the occasional fps or single player rpg , started since Ultima online and for the most part played hardcore to UO, Everquest and Wow, even tho i tried it all (swtor being the last one to date) i stoped.

That maybe will sound strange but after 15 years of mmorpg i am back to regular gaming, and i feel like a gamer again, playing well less and enjoying myself immensively.

I love both gaming world, enjoying starcraft 2 and battlefield 3 on pc and Street fighter X Tekken on console wich i play competively in tournament (played sfiV before), i also play and own tons of games of every style.

When i played mmorpg i faced the problem that it took me too much time, and since i am not the most hardcore guy and i alway keept a sane playtime schedule i had to pretty much only play mmorpg.

For years gaming genre as a whole evolved and i was still blindy playing mmorpg (that only my opinion), sometimes regular online game feel closer to the mmorpg genre then mmo itself, i discovered brillant title like dark soul.

So i guess that make me an ex mmorpg only gamer converted to general gaming :) And as a note i would say that i still enjoyed immensively my time in mmorpg and i could be back for a more casual friendly game without raid and stuff like that but i am not sure cause i think mmorpg game is more a hobby or passion than a game.

sidenote i played to swtor for the solo part for about a month and alone but haven't touched mmo  since 3 years

MMO sandbox games are as exciting as watching paint dry.

I completely understand.

It took 5 yrs of EQ to get me where I never wanted to stick with the same game for too long ever again. Too many good games come out each yr to be married to an older one.

I think the guy in Dazed n Confused said "I get older and the games all stay the same age".  Well it was something like that. So a person might as well enjoy them all.

Asking Devs to make AAA sandbox titles is like trying to get fine dining on a McDonalds dollar menu budget.
