Well the Hype meter on this site means nothing anymore.

I will wait until a week after release, read the forums, than decide if I want to waste my money on it.

GW1 in my book sucked!

Yeah man. This will be my main reason for not buying it day 1. GW1 was utter trash IMO. I played for 2 weeks back in 05, got to 20 and there was nothing to do. I will read the forums here and check out reviews before i buy it.

Currently Playing: SSFIV AE, SFxTekken, SWTOR, WoW. Waiting for: GW2, Resident Evil 6.

I think a reasonable expectation for this game would essentially be a Skyrim type game that'll probably have much more content, multiplayer, and much longer lasting appeal and probably more interesting combat at least to me. Which would already be my RPG of the year, of ALL years especially considering it's at a similar price to Skyrim. Dat content.

Did you finish the campaign? Scratch that if you weren't playing the prophecies game in gw1 for the pvp which what you played was essentially a tutorial for, then you were doing it wrong.

It's a mistake to judge GW2 in ANY way by your feelings of GW for a couple weeks in '05.  For one, the two games are very much different even when talking about the WHOLE of GW (today's game/game world).  Secondly, comparing it to the very early stages of GW, the very vanilla, pvp-centric game that initially launched is an even worse thing to do.  No, there wasn't much to do in Prophesies pve-wise, but a lot of that changed along with the game world becoming many times larger.  GW2 is larger than all of GW, many more activities, and not instanced.  It needs to be judged on its own with little weight on GW1.

I think in general user voting and "hype" is a poor means of judging a game.  Fanboys and haters tend to just vote 10 and 0 respectively.  I personally never vote a number, but I do give my opinion in text for those that want to read it.

For me my biggest fear over the hype on GW2 is, look at the rating on this site for GW1.  It is rated tied for second best MMO of all time LOL.  Now I know some really enjoyed GW1, but I doubt any would consider it the second greatest MMO of all time (behind Rift apparently sitting at #1 LOL).

I personally thought GW1 was unplayable with its invisible walls, horrible camera implementation, and just overall clunky interface.  But judging from the "hype" meter it is apparently the second greatest MMO of all time.  So is this just GW2 fans also voting up GW1 in sympathy then?

Now I've gotten swept up into the GW2 hype on at least 2 occassions now and have stepped back and taken a deep breath.  I'm going to wait and see and hope it pans out, but I've been burned so many times before by "hype" the last thing I'm going to do is be persuaded by a hype meter...

GW2 "built from the ground up with microtransactions in mind"

Ha, I imagine you poking me in the chest as you ask that.  "So do you think so, huh?  So?  Do you think so punk?"  LOL.

Do I think GW2 is like GW1???  I certainly hope not and I'm constantly told its nothing like GW1.  It certainly has different features but it also shares similarities too.  Skill system is similar it seems.  It is developed by the same developer.  It doesn't have a subscription fee.  Etc.

But my point wasn't whether I think GW2 is the same as GW1.  I just used the GW1 "hype" as an example of hype that would lead you astray.  Hype that is flat out wrong in my opinion.  And if GW2 dissapoints (I personally hope for a smash success) it wouldn't be the first hyped game to fall flat...

GW were on the list long before GW2 got up there. It is a great game but not everybody likes it. The same could be said about any game on that list however, but GW ain´t up there because of GW2.

The hype of an unrealeased game is a little silly, people should really wait getting so worked up until they actually tried the game they are hyping, but looking forward to a game that seems interesting is just how we humans work.

All that said, GW2 is still the release of the next 12 months that seems the most interesting.

I think GW2 is already the highest hype game ever on this site and then you want another scale. What about getting real , and realise the real job is not building unreasonable hype, but educating fans in what actual to exspect from this game. Some thing hardcore fans of this community have done for years.

sigh again!

Nah it's really just the way I talk, I don't even get mad. I usually laugh but text doesn't translate well over the interweb.

I personally don't like hype threads like this, as it brings in people who don't know about GW 2 to come a post their dislike.

I haven't pinpointed any claim of why it's overhyped where as I'm dead ass when I say this many can show and explain why they are excited, but ot many can show and explain how it's overhyped.

I can show, explain, and even give my experience as to why I'm excited. I only found two who claim to be dissappointed and funny enough they played the game at the convention year 2010. We know the drastic changes from year 2010 to 2011 to 2011 to 2012.

When people claim their flaws in overhype or how this game will fail they don't even hit the right things, lol I mean the shit is funny, because even I someone who is excited have only one real concern. Consistency...

Consistency is what will make or break, if what we seen, played, and experienced is and will be consistent then I doubt high dissappointment.

Recent MMOs hide a few features and don't show it either because thereisn't much to show to back their claim/statements.

How ever it's life, personally I have never been excited for an MMO to where I felt certain that I'll enjoy it. First I started off a SWTOR die hard but , it occured to me that actually trying and playing a game does give a better result than looking at trailers, yet that's all [just me].

Haha that's funny. Right after opening this thread up and then going back to check the hype of GW2, the hype increased to 8.75 from 8.74. Maybe it was already on 8.75 for a few hours now, but I just noticed the change hehe.

I haven't checked any comments here but seeing that its already 8 pages long, I have a feeling that there are arguments already been made whether GW2 deserves such hype or will live up to it.

Looking forward to EQL and EQN.

This game, if anything, needs to be down-hyped. People are building up unrealistic expectations of the game in their heads (similar to another game which released recently) and are only going to end up disappointed when they ultimately aren't lived up to.

I already see fans going completely apeshit over the slightest negative remark about their 'precious game'. Hell, just try going into a GW2 thread and stating that the combat looks like 'nothing special'. You'll be immediately flamed, have people post videos, accuse you of trolling... it would be funny, if it weren't so sad.

People need to calm down. It's only a game. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go cry over the fact I won't be buying ME3 (kidding, kidding).

If you are talking just about these forums then don't go to guildwars2guru forums because they are pretty mean sometimes, and most of the negative comments are trolls so it can get pretty bad.

I do not think this game is over-hyped yet.  I also think it is in the interest of long term players to get it hyped because you need as many people as possible to buy the game so that Anet has the revenues to focus lots of love on it.

I also think this game deserves all the hype possible for many reasons, not the least of which is that it is going in a new direction from other MMOs and seems to be delivering on quality content from what we can gather from the press beta.

1) PvP that creates an equal playing ground that doesnt requre a gear grind or levling grind.  Of every kind of MMO structured pvp this actually does seem like it can be an eSport, and the Dev's committment to ingame tournaments is really promising. I do not think this is an overhype at all, it can be a serious reality.

2) Skill based flexable/fluid class roles.  You are not totally locked into one role, you aren't a useless tank, you aren't the focus fired healer, and everyone plays a role in dps in PvP.  What is funny is even if you are still of the mindset of being support or control you still have to dps, and coordinate with the other players.  The pvp videos show this and it does ad a very serious challange to the content

3) Challanging content.  Go watch the pve vids and some the pvp videos where if you do not minimize damage you aren't gonna have a heal bot that can pick up and protect you from stupid mistakes.  And whethere or not this is a long learning curve it does demonstrate an added layer of complexity to the game play that players will have to adapt to, because standing in the stupid in this game will make you look bad real fast.

4) Elimination of Faction imblances and Massive World PvP.  Most the recent big mmos have not focused on this at all and made this a serious component of their games.  And for those that have it didn't work out very well, this decision to not have factions develops server community balancing mirior factions and will help quel the issues that SWTOR has created.

In conclusion, I do not think this game has a problem with hype because based on the current evidence it is a game that is very palatable. Now I would agree we should not artifically inflate the hype of the game, but there is cause to be excited about this game, and those hopes should stay realistic, but with the exception of a few posts I have yet to see anything or any viable argument as to why some aspect of this game will be a fail.  Though the trait system needs to be fully released and see what all the 12 major traits are for each line in each profession.   This game is ahead of the curve because there is not a segregation between leveling and end game content, it fits together well.  And with 900k apps for beta I believe that the game can become very polished and not be met with countless issues like other MMOs on release.

Don't jinx it.

Ok >.< (...so far so good though :D. Wooops shhhh...)

Edit: Just browsed through the comments and surprised how clean this thread is! no flame wars or anything! Well done folks :D!

i think that the hype for the game is needed if nothing more than to get the attention of game publishers and developers, and get them to be fearless and innovate the genre instead of trying to copy (and failing miserably) the financial success of WoW
