My question kinda seems obvious, especially to those who have played the original guild wars but I wanted to open it up to discussion anyways. For those who don't know, the "original" Guild Wars classes that are also present in guild wars 2 are the Warrior, Necromancer, Mesmer, Elementalist and Ranger. The thief "kinda" resembles the Assassin, and the Guardian is "kinda" like a Monk/Paragon type class but nothing that really matches up.
Of course, when I say "matches up" I mean in general playstyle - majority of the game is changed so it's not exactly fair to make a direct correlation.
Anyways - the reason I'm making this post is because I wanted to see how people thought about choosing their guild wars 2 class in comparison to the GW1 group. I was a HUGE Mesmer player, played that class for years. When I found out the 8th class was a Mesmer I was so excited -- but the game play video's don't resemble the Mesmer class I used to play (or maybe, I just haven't watched enough). In contrast -- The Ranger is maybe the only class I didn't have at 20 in the original game (despite playing Rangers/Hunters in all other games) but ironically, it's one that caught my attention the most in GW2.
So, after all my rambling, what about you guys? Were you dead set on a class because you played for so long in GW1 and what are your plans for GW2 or are you going a completely different direction?

At first I wanted to start with the engineer or the mesmer, but I will return to the ranger once more. I just love the versatility of this profession and the fact the rangers are usually underestimated. So, after 3000 hours of enthusiastic play on my ranger in GW1 and a long break between playing GW1 and GW2, I will return to my old love. |

Necromancer was my first and main char from guild wars. Loved the versatility it had back in the day and hopefully i can replicate similar game play with the necro this time round again. MM build was my favourite, running around with a horde of undead was leet.

I'd love to play my monk or paragon but that isn't going to happen, so I'll be starting off with another necro. Loved death magic in GW1, and think I can actually be a little bit of a minion master in GW2. I think you can have 4-5 minions up if you fill your non-weapon slots with all possible minion skills.
I'll give it a go. Everything creates huge amounts of negativity on the internet, that's what the internet is for: Negativity, porn and lolcats. |

I created my chars in GW1 in the following order: Ele/Mes Monk/Mes War/Monk Needless to say I loved my Warrior. While Guardian may have been a natural progression for me, I just love the Warrior class in GW2.
If I ever make an alt it would probably be an Ele/Guardian. Main is gonna be Warrior. Currently Playing Random shizzle!
Waiting on TERA, GW2, TSW |

In GW I was a human ranger/elementalist. Since I can't be a "ranger/elementalist" in GW2, I will make my first character an asura elementalist, and my second a sylvari ranger. :) I know, I know....that sounds generic, but I'm into roleplaying and that is part of the decision for me.
I also have a squishy but deadly assassin/mesmer. I might make a thief and a mesmer, but I doubt I'll work with those until later on. Those professions are a bit more complicated, and I think I'd like to go with a couple of easier profs to start out with. President of The Marvelously Meowhead Fan Club |

Mesmer in GW1, Mesmer in GW2. I love the profession so much, I have two of them and neither are PvP dedicated. |

Originally posted by Unlight I loved the profession as well in the original but I'm worried it won't be the same in GW2. I'm not sure why I feel that way, but after watching the videos it looked more clones/shatter combo's compared to punishing your opponent for using skills or actions.
Nothing will ever come close to how awesome the Mesmer was in the original for those who liked it.... lots of people didn't like the playstyle but the ones who did REALLY loved it. I (like you) was one of those people :)
If I can get the same play style out of the GW2 Mesmer, then there's no class debate at all for me. :D |

What was your main in GW? I know I'm going to miss my Ritualist :( My main was Necro, will be the same in GW2. |

Originally posted by Cammy Oh, I'm just in it for the corsets. j/k ... that was GW1. Any female clothie gets to wear them now. ;) Actually, I think they will play very differently, but I think they will also be one of the trickier ones to master. But most importantly, I think they have the greatest potential to make your enemies pull their hair out in frustration. Happiness is driving your opponent insane with rage. I think the new Mesmer has the capacity to do just that ... and look faaaabulous doing it! |

Kind of hard with my main profession, my Monk. And my most played alt? A Dervish :( |

I'm returning to Mesmer, which was my main back when I PvPed a lot. Although recently I have been using my Ritualist spirit spammer to farm achievements for the Hall of Monuments. I really hope Ritualist makes a return in a GW2 expansion, the class has amazing potential and was one of the most unique I have seen. Obviously the healing will have to go, but I think a spirit summoner definitely could work in the new design. |

I'm still torn between going for a Warrior (Which my main in Gw 1 was) or a Ranger with a greatsword focus... can't really decide, but I do have a strong feeling that I'll go for the melee Ranger. Well, okay, my old main used to be an Ele, so I will make one of those too certainly, and a Necro, and a Mesmer! Only thing what bothers me still is the fact that every special effect has to be so overdone and flashy. And the fact that a greatsword is ranged on mesmer, while 1h sword is melee.. who the hell got to figure that out? The greatsword animations for one look ridiculous. Well, those are just design decisions what I stand against, but still, won't judge before testing.. I'm looking more and more forward to GW 2 every week. Oh, did you ask about races? I will go for the Norn, maybe one Human can fit into my account too... perhaps even a single Sylvari to test. We´re all dead, just say it. |

Yeah they have said they recognize the particle effects are an issue so they are working on it. The fire burn effects in particular are pretty crazy. |
