OP  3/05/12 1:10:45 PM#1

Just watched this video from Yogscast:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=tP1INgvPmVE

I know that there has been some controversy about events not changing the world and what not, but this video has a wonderful example of how chaining events work and how they can change the world (albeit temporarily of course).

In the video, Lewis and Simon are exploring a mine when they see an event in progress where they have to defend the mine foreman from monsters.  After the mine foreman successfully repairs the drill, he uses it to create a tunnel in the mine to an as before, unexplorable area.  Then a new event starts where the boys have to collect ore and deliver it to the miners while being attacked by monsters.

After they get enough ore and the miners refine it, the mine foreman runs outside the mine with the boys following and proceeds to talk to an NPC out there about where he's going to take the ore and then runs off again.  The boys didn't follow him, but it's very likely that the event would have continued to chain from there.

So after watching this video, what do you all think?  I think it was pretty obvious that the event changed the world, but at the same time, if the players didn't bother to follow the mine foreman, they would have never known.  I think it may explain how some players had the impression that these events don't really change anything.

Are you team Azeroth, team Tyria, or team Jacob?

Facts do not require fiction for balance.

I saw that too... I was like "Dudes, follow him. FOLLOW HIM! Gah!"

There's a quote from Colin somewhere I saw recently where he recommends when an event ends to hang around and listen to conversations that may come up... they often lead to the next link in the chain, so to speak. This demonstrates that perfectly.

Oderint, dum metuant.

I was just about to start a thread about this video and the newest one they posted today. The two newest videos show what it might be like to adventure in the world.

The newest one shows them moving around to the different events that are going on in the area and doing different things to finish the events.  One example was that they had to catch Dolyak calfs in the area and when they did, the mothers started to attack them. Then out of the ground came the skritts to kill the calfs, that they then had to protect.  All that in one little starter event.

Then at the end of the video when they wanted to move out of the Norn starter area and into the next map, an escort event started which would of led them to an area that had an event that they never completed.  Awesome stuff in my oppinion.

These videos confirm what I've been thinking about GW2. The game almost has too much to do, which is awesome, because all that content, plus the dynamic nature of the game, equals a game I can see myself playing over the long term. Given the rash of MMOs in recent years that have failed to keep me interested for more than a month or two, I'm really looking forward to getting back into an MMO that I'll want to keep playing and that will have more content than I can expect to experience.

It's also clear that there will be plenty of content you missed that you may want to go back to, or at least experience with lower level friends. Why didn't any other AAA MMORPG developers think of level scaling before this?

Well, I know I'm going to be bumbed out when the press beta content runs out and the NDA prevents anything new for the next couple months or so.

BTW, thanks to Yogscast for really making the best of the time they had in the press beta. Too many seem to have squandered the opportunity to provide loads of in game video, or are sitting on troves of raw footage they've decided not to leverage. Kudos.

Meh... I think the vids themselves give ArenaNet an idea of what Lewis and Simon think of their experience. Those feedback forms are really there for us lowlie peasants, if we get a chance to have a go, in the coming weeks.

I know! but honestly they need those polls filled out by as many people as possible... in every beta that has them it can only help the game

What I really liked was today's video showed how non-linear the game is, when it comes to PvE leveling. About halfway into the video they already had the choice to go right to a desert-like zone, or left to a snowy zone. Both have the same level range.

People complain about how linear today's themepark's questing is (Rift, SW:TOR, TERA). Well this is about as non-linear you can get, with a themepark title. Well maybe they could have removed levels all together and the personal story, to make the PvE even more non-linear, but still... cannot wait to have all these options.

I believe in life before death... So dont forget to enjoy it while you still can.

3/05/12 2:56:25 PM#12

This is a linear event chain.... People are lead by the NPC's, felt very naturall, questing together with others by just following the NPC's. But why didn't they invite eachother to group and chat?

Can you guys imagine how awesome the bigger multi threaded evetns will be?

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

Yeah, that seems common in the press beta.  I think when they get some actual players in the world with a stake in the game's success, they'll start getting a whole lot of feedback.  Still it's a bit irksome.  Can't consider balancing these events if no one is telling them what they think about 'em.

the player isn't that good but it's understandable as they only got to play it for a weekend. he's quite informative tho.

Interesting.  He was in the event the whole time but only received silver participation.  I guess just spamming skill one has some draw backs.  :)

The Game rewards you for participation, not for simply being there. It also works to counter people who just run with the pack and don't actually do anything. Or botters? In the distant future. You have to actually participate and contribute to get Gold. Just being there and hitting 1 on a few mobs... not going to get you far

I know.  He participated pretty much the whole time but mostly just spammed skill 1 and occasionally casted other skills because he was explaining the game and talking about it.  I was just merely pointing out that it wasn't enough to get full credit.  I think that is cool that you have to fully participate to get a gold reward.

Seems most of the press appears to do that. Which yes...I find incredibly annoying and extremely lazy. They're only experiencing something they supposedly enjoy already and getting paid to do so or looking for payback from their simulcasts but can't take a few fucking seconds to fill out a poll to play a small role in helping to improve the overall value of the game and experience of players? You know...the same game that later on some of these same people will be responsible for evaluating and reviewing the game? Or creating more simulcasts about their gameplay experiences?

Give me a break...not like they have to write an essay for each one.

1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.

2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.

At the end when he's talking to the new vendor after capturing the calves, you can see the next event starting up. A charr and a sylvari are talking and agree to travel together, which begins the escort event.

My bad, wrong link. I was watching both yesterday's and today's videos.  Changed the link & Master10k also posted it.
