600 sounds a lot but if memory serves right, wow alone is run by over 5000 employees. So it isn't exactly that big of a deal from my point of view.

Think of it this way, firing more than 10% of your workforce, thats huge, I don't care what Blizz says.

Since you (nor I) know nothing about their business...it's kind of moot.  How many offices do they have?  How many employees at each office?  How many 'assistants to the assistant'?

All I can go by is when the company I worked for downsized (9000 people out of a 120K workforce)  the VAST majority of the cuts came from 'middle' management - the supervisors/managers.  Since none of us know how 'top heavy' they are - we can't make any sort of valid call.  It might not be as 'huge' as you think.

With the rapid expansion they've had, I can definately see them being bloated in multiple areas.

And what the do is relevant how?

Lets do some simple math here, they had a rather significant decline in their paying player base, recent tittles havent been any where near as successfull as hopes. Im sure they didnt fire people for financial reasons.

It is relevenat because thats how big corp runs. Some divisions might be cut off completely. Some division might be trim down because they dont need that many people to work on the same thing anymore. Corp trim unneeded people to max their profit. They dont pay people to sit around and do nothing. It might not be obvious at first but when viewed over one or two years and it is not hard to find out they dont need that many people to do some jobs.

Do you think Microsoft is hurting ? if not, why are they letting people go ?

Bingo! So what you are saying is they ARE firing people for financial reasons. You do realise you just acknowlage it now right.

If they truely had so many people sitting on their hands all day they where doing something teribly wrong. Thank you!

It most definately because of a rather significant decline in their paying playerbase and the lack of "hoped" success from their recent releases. But you are right, the sky isnt falling, they arent going backrupt and wow wont be closed down any time soon.

But it does definately indicate they arent doing as good as they used to. Thank you for acknowlaging that.

Aren't we jumping into conclusion too fast ? Project comes and goes. There might be some position needed when a project is started and as time goes by, those positions are not needed anymore. Why should the company keep those people in their jobs that is no longer needed?

No company is operating out of charity. For sure, Blizzard is not running the company for the benefit of the employees. I suppose you never work in a industry that has position shuffling and projects changing ? I hope you don't have to.

When it comes down to letting go of people we don't need in the company, we trim the fat fast as well. The company is glad we have them with us when we needed them but they will be let go when the project/goal change directions.

Do I feel bad when I let people go, yeah I do. Would I keep them and pay them when they are no longer needed ? Nope I would not. It is not greed. It is how business work.

Just because some divisions are cut doesnt mean they are not doing well. All it says is ..the division is no longer needed.

The Panda xpac will take players to level 95? A good sized patch, which could already be finished could add 5 more levels which would give WOW the 100 levels that Blizz once said would be as far as they would take it. D3 could and should be close to finished. Laying off ,which I will clarify for the haters as being different than fireing people,  10% of the workforce isnt exactly a shock if the work is in fact near completion. Truth is, Blizz is till rakeing in the cash, but far be it from me to get in the way of a good doom and gloom thread.

Pink glasses are pink

Considering their revenues in 2009 where around 5 billion, 2011 was little over 3 billion. Yeah.. I gues you are right, Im jumping to conclusions asuming they are doing it to tighten the belt.

Lets sum this up  Revengues :

2009 : ~5 billion

2010 : ~3.8 billion

2011 : 3.2 billion

You really want to discuss the .. limited amounth of content they release in xpacks and how they keep on working on the missing content to patch into the game in future patches?  Im sure it has more to do with the 40ish % drop in revenue.

Where did you get the 2011 for 3.2 billion ?

Or even 2010 for 3.8 billion ?

For calendar year 2011, Activision Blizzard’s GAAP net revenues were $4.76 billion, as compared with $4.45 billion for 2010.  The company delivered record calendar year net revenues from digital channels, accounting for a record of more than 34% of the company’s total net revenues. For calendar year 2011, Activision Blizzard’s earnings per diluted share increased to 92 cents, as compared with 33 cents per diluted share for 2010.

If a majority of them are customer support related, it looks like Blizzard may join the other big companies at saving money by having contract support, instead of dedicated employee support. Probably the firs tthing a company of that size working in MMOs will do to try to lessen the expenses each year. So not a real cause for alarm, but it is unfortunate for all the people who have to find a new job in a very competitive field :(
