Why aren't there more sandboxes with pasta in them?  Uncharted Waters Online has pasta in it.  You have to invest in Naples to be allowed to buy it.  But there isn't any pasta sauce in the game.  You can cook mushroom pasta, pork and turnip pasta, seafood pasta, and tonno pasta.  But people don't, because the first two don't recover enough vigor to justify using an inventory slot for them, the third requires mussels and I didn't even know that the game has mussels, and the fourth requires tuna.  And if someone is going to cook with tuna, he's probably going to make tuna olive steak, not tonno pasta.  Besides, having to get pasta from Naples and tomatoes from Merida or Guatemala for the same recipe means it would be a very expensive recipe to make, even apart from the tuna.

And so, if you can't find any pasta in sandbox MMORPGs that you like, then you don't like sandbox MMORPG pasta.  Which I don't.  Because I don't like sand in my pasta.

Quizzical is correct.

People claim they like a certain gender of gaming but in truth they only like the game they invision.

This applies to all games, in sandboxes it's just more clear since people expect sandboxes to give them the freedom to do whatever they please.

I thought the "Socialism" debate had potential, personally.. something along the lines that socialism does not work because you end up having a massive police state to enforce it, because it's human nature to envy what your neighbour has or "keeping up with the jones" it therefore needs enforcing, and hence massive corruption arises as a consequence.

Equality in mmorpgs seems to be one of the problems. Socialist themepark mmos where everyone's the same and the economy is a state hand-out. But an equal problem seems to occur in successful Sandbox mmorpgs where oligarchies eventually come to rule?

I guess you didn't look very hard, then.  I've spent $10, total, in five months.  And there's nothing more in the item mall that is of much interest to me.

I dunno, read another post in this forum that said you could buy ships that couldn't be attacked by pirates or speed boosts that let your cash shop heavy cruiser catch up to a light weight frigate.  If so, that's pretty much the definition of P2W even if you chose not to utilize it.

 

For $2/day, you can get a blue flag item that makes it so that you can't attack other ships, and can't be attacked by other ships.  That does let you opt out of PVP, but it's not exactly going to help you gank other people, since you can't attack them, either.  They're mainly for people who are paranoid, or for pirates who have good reason to fear that they'll be attacked anywhere they go.

Speed boosts can be useful.  But it's not like you're going to constantly get ganked if you don't buy one.  I've been attacked in PVP five times total in five months.  That's only been attacked, not lost.  In two of them, I ran away.  In another two, I could have gotten away if I had been more prepared and not botched the situation because I was so surprised to be attacked by another player.  And in the last one, I'm pretty sure that the player didn't use item mall stuff; at the very least, his ship wasn't an item mall ship.

So my total PVP losses over the course of five months of playing the game are about what I'll make in an hour or so of playing the game.  And that's when I'm not especially trying to make money, even.  That's an hour of sailing around exploring, while typing posts like this one.

Also, speed boosts don't necessarily let pirates catch you.  They're only active outside of combat.  If a pirate attacks you as soon as he's barely within range, you'll probably be able to run away easily.  He has to pass you and get in front of you to have a good chance of not letting you run away.  And if you see him coming, you can log off and leave the pirate chasing an open sea.

But, if you really think that the speed boost items are absolutely essential in order to play the game, then just buy them.  Even if you also buy all the special shipbuilding permits that you have any use for, it still comes out to cheaper than a $15/month subscription.

Thank you for taking the time to address the P2W issue in UWO.  I realize that the questions were really off topic, the payment model has nothing to do with whether or not the game is a sandbox. (though might impact people's perception's of whether or not its a good sandbox)

And with your explanation, it doesn't seem that bad.  Sounds like these are mostly defensive tools and at 2.00 per day that will limit many players from buying them long term.  (but a great idea if you need to move a large volume of goods safely for a short period of time)

Still might have to give this one a go sometime.

This thread made me tired, I feel like buying an AA account on newgameway and just playing that for the time being.
