Hi, this week I started playing EVE online and finished all the tutorial career agent missions and found it pretty entertaining. Though after finishing these missions I'm totally clueless about what to do. I understand there are several careers you can specialize in: industry, mining, exploration, combat (PvP) and of course all the side branches in these specializations. Though what I don't get is the main goal of the game? Making ISK? I joined a very friendly corp and I asked them several questions concerning careers and found out I'm the explorer type player. So what do I do? Just random scanning systems for signatures and clear them out, grab the resources and sell them for ISK? I guess mining is even more boring, just sit there and bring in some ores, dock and repeat. What I'm implying is that EVE seems like a very repetitive game with lots of grinding, and I'd like to ask you your opinion about this statement and tell me what the goal of the game is. I know you can set your own goal in EVE but if your goal is to become the best explorer in EVE, what do you do all day? (i.e. scanning systems all day and clear out signatures or wormholes with your corp, divide cash and repeat.)

It's understandable, if EVE is your first sandbox, you might be at a loss of where to go and what path to follow. This might help for a start http://www.tentonhammer.com/eve/guides/politics/30-things and this table has often been used to assist players in determining what path to pursue. http://swiftandbitter.com/eve/wtd/ Now to clear up a few misconceptions. EVE has no grind. You can level up your skills without ever logging in other than to set them to training every now and then. You might be arguing that accumulating ISK is a grind, and to some extent that's true, ISK is power and the key to bigger and better things just like in real life. With more ISK you can fly progressively bigger, more productive or combat capable ships. It allows you to Build your own POS (station), contribute to building a Base for your Alliance, or build up a fleet and attempt to dominate all of free space. You might decide to dominate the marketplace, some folks make (and lose) billions of ISK trying to drive the market in their favor. Others decide a life of piracy is for them, demanding ransoms from those brave or foolhardy enough to get caught out in low sec space trying to eek out a little extra profit. Scamming is a viable career, many folks thrive on the tears of their victims as billions are taken from the unsuspecting, and there probably is no bigger fun than to somehow infiltrate a corporation and work your way into their confidence and then steal them blind once they give you control of the assets. (assuming you're a sadist of course) Back to your exploring example, yes, you probably want to work your way up to better scanning skills, and then work with people to find the treasures located all over the EVE universe. But truthfully, exploring is more of a side bar occupation in my book, keeps you entertained while you're waiting for your next big combat operation. I could go on further, but probably lost your attention shortly after the 2nd link. Good luck and I hope you figure out the path that best suites you in the EVE universe.

Don't subscribe just yet. For the first month you'll be mostly reading about the game. No kidding. |

OP, my advise is to read up on 1-3 aspects of the game that appeal to you most. Take in consideration of this game and its vast ability to do so much more then other MMO's lack and -enjoy- the learning process as you see fit. This has depth, delve into the game, get into a corp (which you seem to have already done, gj!), and start with what sounds good to you. Early game days aren't much of time-sinks due to low skill-up times. Kyleran pretty much has it right though, exploring is more-so a 'side' thing that people normally would do. I understand you've joined a corp, but if you still want some help, message me through the PM and I'll give you my in-game character name. (I'm also in a very knowledgable corp/alliance). |

My advice is just find a short term goal. You want to be able to do X, can I do that in a month or two? Head towards that. By the time you get there you will have learned a lot about what you like and where you want to go. Also try to find people to play with, this game is much better with friends. However, be careful are eager to scam. Never trust someone completely, but don't be afraid to take a risk with someone. Eve is all about knowing what and when to risk. Sent me an email if you want me to mail you some pizza rolls. |

Instead, join EVE-University and talk to your current corp about it. It'll tell you 2 things. 1. If they say 'no'; you do not want to stay with them as unless they are Goonswarm, EVE-Uni has the largest resources (not just in-game assets but teachers/classes) for new players. 2. if they say 'yes' then you can join Eve-Uni without guilt. I would strongly advise against listening to pseudo-vets and pseudo-elitist as they are clueless.
No worries about join high-sec corp, do not let anyone bully you with crap like above, make your own opinions. |

Originally posted by jpnz Eh I went into it with a friend, we both tried multiple times.. I think if it was twitch based it'd be more entertaining for me personally, but all the piracy, scamming and pvp sounds very entertaining, its the gameplay for me I think that is dull. I could be wrong though, IDK |
