No. I am often, if not usually, primarily a priest, cleric or paladin character. I like to heal, I like to support. I like to help my allies out. I like to focus on more than just killing the mobs. I like to orchestrate strategies and help my party execute them. I don't want to either mindlessly DPS something or mindlessly click heals. I was a priest first in WoW, and I ended up just clicking health bars and clicking whichever heal was best. It ended up being a game of rock paper scissors with which heal was best. I was very good at it, but it was very satisfying. My main is almost certainly going to be a guardian. There is so much for me to do with that profession. I can kill, certainly, and I do like that. (One problem I often had with MMOs was that the class I liked best for healing was severely gimped in solo PvE. Not so here.) I can heal allies. I can keep the fight going. I can protect us all from the enemy. I can hit both enemies and allies with great buffs and debuffs. I can give us all a damage boost at just the right time, or save us all from a single powerful attack. I can stop the enemy in its tracks for just long enough for us to all reposition. If you like supporting your party, you are going to love this game. There is so much more proactive work for you to do. There is less reactive help, but there is some. If all you like to do is watch health bars go up and down, then no, this is not the game for you. Though I doubt you fall into that last camp. Few people really do. I think you'll love the game. Give it a shot. "There are two great powers, and they've been fighting since time began. Every advance in human life, every scrap of knowledge and wisdom and decency we have has been torn by one side from the teeth of the other. Every little increase in human freedom has been fought over ferociously between those who want us to know more and be wiser and stronger, and those who want us to obey and be humble and submit." — John Parry, to his son Will; "The Subtle Knife," by Phillip Pullman |

You cant play a traditional healing class..
But you can play kind of a support role with some classes where you heal your party somewhat and prevent them to take damage... It might even get close to AoC healing the way you would be playing ..... Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) |

Yes... you should avoid this game. If you enjoy having a set role and assignement that is never gonna change no matter what content you take on then no... this game is not for you. This game is for people who hate that... Lucky for you there are MANY trinity based MMO's on the market "Don't mistake a fun game for a good game... Checkers is fun to play but its not exactly the highest point of gaming design... and definatly not worth $60 plus $15 a month" |

Originally posted by Monorojo In most games with holy trinity combat, healers do more then just raise hp bars. They also remove debuffs, sometimes provide buffs in the form of wards etc. So its not only about being reactive when a lot of hp is lost already, but also about being proactive. Buffing a (in those cases) tank before the encounter starts. In GW2 you can take on this role too with the right skills equipped. Though not a hp bar watching healer, but a Guardian or Water Elementalists that places AOE healing , wards etc both in a proactive and reactive way. It will just be more situational and dynamic and not just tank and heal. So with the right skills equipped you can still be mainly support instead of dps. This setup is just not limited to a specific profession. I also suspect that for exploration mode dungeons itll be necessary for some players to switch to a more supporting role within their profession. |

Each one of those came from descriptions of a single ability and of course those abilities are based off of the kits you choose but that's the great thing about this game, you can change the needed role on the fly in coordination with other people you are with so that you're teams are more successful. No more of this, waiting crap to find the right person, and no more of this teamed content failed because a single person didn't work out or left due to not using the correct mod or whatnot or being spec'd like a cookie cutter. I think it's fantastic oh and while being able to do these things, the engineer still has the ability to lob grenades, use damage turrets, poison attacks, use mines, it's all in the choices you make and what you switch your skills out to be. Edit: I've looked up three professions now, every profession seems to give the user a set of choices that do similar things when breaking down the abilities into HoTs, Cures, and AOE heals so basically yeah you can be a healer, the only differences are the people aggroing can dodge to reduce damage now and you don't spend all of your time looking at bars. Edit2: Apparently i was wrong, i looked at the thief and warrior and while some of their abilities do provide buffs and remove conditions from allies, they don't have a clear healing role. it appears that the only professions with healing abilities are Engineer, Elementalist, Necromancer with some minor abilities with the Ranger, Mesmer. |

@OP: Everyone who has played GW, knows that healing and the role of dedicated healer are vastly overrated, and that there are more elegant alternatives, esp if you've played roles as earth elementalist or protection monk. Smart damage prevention & deflection > whack-a-mole healing.
That said, GW2 offers enough options for healing/support roles, only not as dedicated or in the same way as in classic trinity focused games, seeing how mob attention isn't based primarily on aggro level, tank roles aren't built around generating aggro and increasing an overall aggro stat and most healing is AoE based and not target or group based. |

Originally posted by DannyGlover GW1 had multipul expansions, none of which increased the power of items. So unless they've had a massive change in their design philosophy its unlikely they will follow that vertical style of progression. Future content expansions will focus on new skills, classes and potentially new weapon options for existing classes when it comes to power options. I'd be suprised if they suddenly change to a gear treadmill design. |

Originally posted by DannyGlover Incorrect. Anet already stated that max stat gear will be easily achievable when you hit max level. They don't want that sort of power progression, because it isolates people who play casually and doesn't really fit jump-in playstyle. Closest thing to power progression may occur on level cap increase, and even that is uncertain (considering the fact that GW1 had none of it). |

On the bright side.....noone can blame the healer anymore for letting the tank die now can they? You can finally tell them to go heal themself. hehe

I have my doubts, without any sort of progression, since that tends to be a central pillar of what draws people to the content of RPGs, and especially MMORPGs. I'm wondering if maybe there's more to it, that ANet hasn't let on about, or if maybe it'll just be simply fun enough that I'll be flat out wrong about this.. guess we'll see :)
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world. |
