Much of the little english info on KTERA's upcoming patch talking about dynamic content unabashedly called these tears in space-time-whatever "rifts", as well as some of the artwork looking like something out of Rift itself, but it's official from En Masse (the team behind the english localization) that we Westerners will refer to it as a Nexus. It doesn't make the the ripoff of the idea, or the ripoff of the implentation of it, any less hilariously sad though. I'm playing this game for combat but still get a good laugh they'd blatantly and unabashedly copy it. Does a rift by any other name still seem as foreboding? Spec'ing properly is a gateway drug. |

lol I didn't mean to imply RIFT was the first but the inspiration for the implementation seems obvious ;). Spec'ing properly is a gateway drug. |

Originally posted by DeserttFoxx Um..no lol. I just find it humorous how they implemented it. If good features were entirely the property of their original creator, recent mmos wouldn't exist. I just found the implementation humorous and this cover image. It's almost like TERA is trolling Rift, that's all. No, as much as I love the combat of this game, there are other parts I don't like. I hope this game makes a splash big enough that other games are inspired by it's conbat. RIFT recieved so much praise at launch for its polish and everything else. If another game has a launch like that with all around features, respectable lore, and a combat system like TERA's, I think we might actually have a winner. I just look at this image and get a good laugh because TERA almost seems to be taunting Trion. Korean writing and studio stamp aside, that looks like a shot straight out of RIFT.

Trion had a good concept but it was poorly executed in their game, perhaps BHS can do a better job of it. I seem to recall Trion getting into trouble by using the copy righted name "Rift" also, so that makes this post a funny read.
~btw OP, its considered bad form to troll other game forums :/

Why would Rift have any cause to get ruffled feathers over someone copying them? Their entire game is WoW, only with easily changeable talent trees(D2, WoW) and dynamically spawning public quests(WAR). Who cares if Tera implements large scale endgame-only rifts(Rift)? Gimme a break. |

Originally posted by stayontarget Totally not trolling. I am completely invested in this game, including pre-order lol. I also despise RIFT above all else. Maybe TERA will do it better. Like I said above, all I want is TERA to be fun while I play it and to make a big enough splash that developers quit alt-tabbing to just WoW to see how to design a game. I just read your tag next to your name OP. TERA is for you, as a former FFXI player I'm psyched, and when I got in the last beta everyone in general was talking about ffxi and how this game had something that reminded us of its potential when we first started playing. Will it last? Who knows, i'm not a fortune teller. I'm just saying, this is the next game for you. Oh and RIFT had such potential (the rift part) I was very sad at its implimentation and I look forward to TERA's. |

I kinda feel the same way, but all game companies copy each other. Rift pretty much copied WOW. Even the Rifts from Rift were just PQ's from WAR. |

Ha! Ha! But actually Inven is the Korean version of Mmorpg.com, and they post lots of info on TERA, as they have close ties with BHS. You can check it out here |

Originally posted by Kumapon Apologies then :) Still, mostly this thread was meant in good humor. I find the brash nature of how they copied the idea funny. I don't know why, I just do :). Maybe they'll do it better, but I don't care if they don't because they've already done combat better. Also intended so that people know that EME intends for them to be called Nexuses. Originally posted by Deathofsage It's not sad when all companies rip off ideas from another. It has become the norm. Plus, I don't really care, not because it's Tera, but because i'm use to seeying things be implemented from one game to another ( or from one commodity to another). That's how the world works. For example, look at our phones and tablets .. One idea gets popular then everyone follows the idea ( in their own unique way, of course).. Imo, every game should have something like Rift and something like what Swtor has in terms of voice acting for every quest..It might not be the most popular idea to everyone.. but i'm sure, based on subscription numbers, the ideas where well received.
Just my 2 cents... |

If every game has questing like SWTOR I'm done with MMOs. What a ghastly concept. |

Originally posted by tavtav Not just that, but resource-wasting. That kind of thing costs wayyy too much for way too little. Yeah it's nice for big important quests to have nice voices.. even star voices... like the fall of an expansion's boss.. but every quest.. it's just silly. I do James Earl Jones from C&C though, and a few less notable stars they had. Spec'ing properly is a gateway drug. |

Originally posted by Kumapon Well, to be fair they did improve on the PQ quite a bit. They appear (semi) randomly, they can be closed, at least for a while, they have more stages, branching based on success and they spit out invaders. They took a good idea as a template and then iterated it into something better. Nothing wrong with that. I suspect that this and variations of it will become common and even expected for the next generation of MMOs. It is not the solution to every problem but it is a solid mechanic for adding dynamic elements to a game. The Law of Conservation of Stupidity: |

I have to admit my first reaction last week was "oh, snap" at the blatant copy followed by excitement that it was in TERA. I have a checklist of features I like in an MMO. The MMO with the most, or most important, checks wins my sub or time.
Hopefully they will implement the mechanics in other areas. Just not worth my time anymore. |

who cares if Tera calls their rifts, rifts or whatever they feel like?? copy or not its not like the greatest popular mmo out there today didnt copy from others. aka WoW. you think every idea in WoW was original? as long as they made it better, its all good. |
