Certain things are OK in Mortal, but you have to admit it is pretty bad.

First of all, there are giant seams in the terrain in Mortal that rip the world apart.  What's more - the artist often did not match up the corresponding meshes so you can see where the terrain should fit together but it is 10 feet off.  It's not a big deal for me, but it looks sloppy and it is immersion breaking.

Second, Mortal does not have proper bloom.  The Darkfall world is completely covered by bloom so that even though the graphics are not amazing, the world feels alive in _every_ corner.  Mortal is a relatively lifeless world that often looks like a giant golf course.  The terrain is covered by jagged polygons any time there is a hill or mountain, these look aweful and really need smoothing out.  There is no real forest even, the old colored forest feels like an orchard planted by people and the new jungle is a pale shadow of its former self.  It feels like the devs need to get out in the wilderness more, because it seems they have never been there.  The Darkfall world is much more immersive.

Third, plants and trees are not anchored properly in Mortal.  Who hasn't seen bushes floating in the air or too far under ground and grass springing from inside a house or keep.

Fourth, water graphics are really poor in Mortal.  The surface textures at high settings don't compare to Darkfall.  Water is murky when you are inside it, but from the outside you can see through the water like it is crystal clear.

Mortal graphics could be better than Darkfall, but they aren't due to lack of art development.  I'd much prefer fully immersive graphics that are not the best, over barren wasteland style graphics that look better but don't feel better.

I had the same issues when I tried to jump into Mortal, it really was like a bad version of Darkfall. The problem is that the Mortal Dev's seem to be light years ahead of the Darkfall Dev's when it comes to the community.

 

If you don't mind the wait I'd suggest looking into Archeage. While it may not have the best combat system, it does look pretty awesome in every other aspect. If you played SWTOR then you can deal with some of the more mainstream themepark elements that it has in the game. I think they're trying to attract the sandbox community as well as the large MMO themepark community.

Just watch this video in 1080p and I don't see how you can think this game isn't awesome.

Yeah, with other people here, I'm not sure if these posts are just trolling or not...

 

I'll bite I guess.  If the terrain and sky were the only thing that had to do with graphics... I'd say MO has DF beat.  The problem is that there are many other things to consider when talking about a graphics engine.  The buildings, cities, objects within the game look as if they were just thrown down.  Going into a city, nothing looks as if it's actually meant to be there.  There's little to no artistic talent with their design team in my opinion.  I've seen better world design with NWN player servers.  Characters glide, twitch, and warp all over the screen at times.  The animations are some of the worst in modern MMO's.  The prediction is still horrendous in my opinion.  There are still flying pigs.  There are cheaters everywhere, and the GM's aren't much better.  The UI, which is part of the graphics system, is also poorly done and incomplete in some areas.  It's horribly unfriendly to new players.  Well, I'm getting off topic.. so I'll stop.  When using an engine that TERA uses, you should get TERA like graphics out of it.  Problem here is, they have a bunch of 12 yr old kids designing their world and UI.  Or, at least that level of talent.

 

Most of what I said has something to do with the graphics though, as terrain and sky, quite obviously, does not tell the entire story.

Indeed. When i played the trial, i was in a starting city called...Toxai or something. However, most of what i was looking at was really ugly and poorly made. While some of the assets are nice, also the mountains far away, other stuff is just plain ugly. The terrain itself is poorly sculpted, also many textures seem to be painted in a hurry which results in ugly  and illogical looking roads, rivers, etc.

This has not really something todo with the capabilities of the engine or something, more with the amateurish use of the tools at hand. 

I also looked at screenshots and i am willing to believe that other parts of the world are better made and look better, but what i saw so far ---> not so good :/

Seriously,  MO is as close to the perfect sandbox game as exists.   Does it hve minor flaws. Sure.  That is why we get free expansions!  If it had no flaws there would never be a reason to patch or expand the game.  Personally I am glad to get regular FREE expansions. 

 

The last time I played I was walking through Fab and it was so crowded I almost could not get to the banker!  More people are trying the game every day and the future looks bright.

Ack, see, you're doing it again, over-exaggerating the positive and downplaying the significant shortcomings this title has.

You can't point at the negative posters and say that you're going to counter them by being all positive, makes you look sillier than they do.  

You need to take the high road and admit to the flaws where it is appropriate to do so, otherwise you come off as a wide eyed fanboi, which no one takes seriously.

This may be the case in most other games, but in mortal online, there are people talking to each other in town, looking out for reds, discussing trade, crafting stuff, helping new players out, players chasing thiefs who steal from people in town, and usually most people just hang around in towns while talking lol, even butchering is done in towns.

Don't see how that's a flaw. You SHOULD be safe inside guardzone as MO should not be a game based solely on PvP and should not be a games that is only for the hardcore few. It should be a game in which several gamestyles should be enjoyed. Of course for the hardcore pvper, as you are, you would probably view the safety of guardzone as a flaw and it is quite possible that the average Mortal Online player views town safety as a flaw but that is not saying much. I think what speaks volumes is the current state of Mortal Online and it's lack of a diverse community and numberous player base. Even with certain bug fixes that have caused a number of players to leave the game still would not flourish because it still only caters to one style, possibly two, but a game where there is debate on if the sub levels are at 2000 a dismal 2000 should not be viewed as anything close to being successful.

The only reason I post even make a post in this thread is because of the quote that I have taken from Cyde. I think this is one of the many current issues that MO has, the current playerbase makes many suggestions to the small development team and they try to listen to them. While that sounds like a great thing, is it really? When the subscription numbers are so low is that the voice they shoud listen to? My two cents... Flame me if you would like.

I totally agree with what you are saying here Energyo. SV needs to open the game up to more  playstyles and get more noncombat type things in game.

Even though I never had a problem with AQ(untill the last little thing), I think that some of this may change with them gone. I seen lots of post from people who where in the focus group that made me wonder why SV would have ever picked them.

Hopefully they will fill the spots with a better mix of players with differnt ideas and playstyles.

Agreed, reading some of their posts makes me wonder what the hell SVwere thinking - you think at the very least as Testing Team they would have to conduct themselves with a little more professionalism, they should have signed up to something liket hat before they got the tag and the additional weight that would go with their posts, I think they all need kickin'.

The fact that you had to give SV your personal ID info to get into the focus group kinda limited the number of volunteers, I'd wager...

Only a "special" and not very sensible person would provide a company like SV with both ID and CC details.

I'm beginning to realize why they asked for id's though, at least then they can have some kind of measure of maturity level. You wouldn't want a 14 year-old kid in there calling the shots.

I realize age in this group of people is no sure measure of maturity, but...

Are you sure that's an issue? Some of their GMs are like 14 y/o.
