Too much of their budget went towards voice acting, storytelling and cinametics. Almost seems like they turned a blind eye on other areas like justifying the "mmo" part of the mmorpg.

imo, it's not a game made by gamers for gamers, just another money grap thats all, the starwars label could sell and there were indeed a  huge amount of take-in, having  100+ servers,  woot all those sheeps for the slaughter roflmao.....

Your loss.  Doing Heroics and FPs in groups and doing the grouped dialogues is lots of fun - especially in the more "story oriented" FPs like Esseles and Jedi Prisoner (and BW say there are lots more of that type to come).

eHug: I did a few group runs at the start and wonder why it's more fun for you if you read what others clicked when it makes everything so easy that there's no challenge at all, but if you do, I am happy for you. Tastes differ and I prefer to not sleepwalk through a game instead of having shared dialogues that all lead to the same results anyway.

You start to get a taste for the roll of the dice (will my response be chosen?) and it's fun to see the people you're playing with - i.e. how they've chosen to customize their characters - close up, speaking their lines. 

eHug: I get that taste on every item drop, not sure why doing the same thing with parts of the dialogue is such a special thing. Until now when something funny happened I just told the ppl I played with and it had the same effect without making the game too easy.

You know how chatting and lol-ing about in-game stuff is one of the things you do in MMOs?  Well grouped dialogues are another dimension of "thing" about which to chat, and lol - in both a postiive and negative sense - but the point is it's a legitimate multiplayer thing, and it's a totally new experience in MMOs, and in about 90% of the groups I've been in, people actually enjoy it a lot.

eHug: I do group just not anymore for quests that are so easy to complete that I can solo them without compagnion. I group up for pvp, where it's actually helping. PVP is one of the major weak points of the game though, just like all MMO related elements. SWTOR only shines with the single player parts - and that's why I play it.

Try it, you might be surprised at how moreish it becomes.

eHug: I tried it, I didn't like it and to tell the truth you are the first person that I heard of enjoying it after doing it after the first few times.

At any rate, it's a genuine innovation in MMOs, an experience you can only get in SWTOR, and of course it's an MMO innovation that could only exist because dialogues and cutscenes are BW's "speciality", so naturally they've brought it to the MMO genre.

So, while I agree that some of the "standard MMO" aspects, BW haven't really done anything original, here they truly have, and it's obvious that this is one of the things they've spent their money on, and it's well spent.

eHug: Yeah, it's a rather new feature and I am pretty sure they implemented it to make this single player oriented game a bit more group oriented - and since you like it, they succeeded for some players. Not for all though, as you can see from my case (;

And, the critics are understimating the power of it (and the power of the solo storyline dialogues).  It's not something you can pooh-pooh as "just VO".  It's the main "hook" for people who HAVEN'T BEEN INTERESTED IN MMOS UNTIL NOW.

And this is the point that's eluding the critics.  Many more people have tried WoW than have subcribed.  Why didn't they subscribe?  That's the question BW have obviously asked themselves, and that's the market SWTOR is aimed at - gamers who don't normally like MMOs.

eHug: They kind of succeded bringing non MMO players into a mostly non MMO title, true.

And why?  Because of the results you see: MMO players are all jaded, and nothing will ever satisfy them.  There is absolutely no point in making MMOs for the "MMO community".  It's a complete waste of time.  Better to seek new pastures.

eHug: That's why SWTOR often feels like WoW in space with cutscenes, true. But I don't think generalizing the mmo community in the way you do it really helps your arguments. There's not much that the old school mmorpg croud that prefers choice and freedom in gaming can play right now, so what reaction do you expect when they get the 232th loveless themepark pseudo mmo into their hands and they are not SW nerds like me? :P

I'm not a GW2 fanboy, but after comparing the two videos I'm beginning to wonder how much money BioWare spent [mod edit]

  You link these 2 videos to prove that GW2 looks better visually?  Are you serious?  GW2 looks cartoony as hell.  Look at the way your character runs.....it doesn't even look natural.  And have you even played SWTOR?  I'm playing a Sith Warrior at the moment.  The storyline is amazing.  The voiceover work is top notch.  Overall, I love SWTOR and plan to play for as long as the game is fun to me. 

   Did Bioware piss me and a ton of other people off with their crappy patching system?  Bigtime.  But they seem to be fixing issues like that...and as long as things keep getting better, I'll keep playing. 

  I really don't understand all the SWTOR hate.  I seriously doubt the OP has even played it.  If he has played other MMOs and finds SWTOR subpar, then I am stunned.  I have played WoW (since Day 1), SWG, CoV, CoH, EQ, EQ2, and DAOC.....and SWTOR makes them all look silly.  It's a great game.

I feel the same way. The games that flamers on this site hold up as the gold standard were pieces of sh*t in my mind, so it's no wonder they don't like this game. Some of them griped about this game for many months before release yet still bought the thing, which makes me question whether or not they suffer from a gamer's version of battered wife's syndrome.

I do have to ask you about that last part. I'm having too much fun in TOR to give a rat's *ss about another game's development, so could you explain what you mean by  the pedophilia nature of the GW2 devs?

Man, I made a female toon. A few of them, and they're quite attractive and awesome but.. Elin or whatever they're called? I just feel...it feels wrong.

I heard they made it so all their outfits were far more conservative and less skimpy, which in my opinion is a good thing, but at the same time its like.. how long are you going to spend on this really?

I agree its not exactly my thing, but some people like playing with little girl dolls, and for non creepy reasons, or so I have to believe...  I mean I see people with strawberry shortcake stickers and dolls in their cars when I go shopping, i'm assuming some of those people would be the ones who are rolling an Elim, as they are probably "really freaking cute" in their eyes.

I think it only applied it to Elin but honestly I didn't strip any of my characters down and think EME is ignoring those threads as much as most players. There's more important things to be done for Westernization then caring what characters look like topless, bottmless, or gearless.

What I dont get is the pvp part of the game. Honestly go and play for half an hour Team Fortress II which is f2p since a while and you have more fun and more variety than in swtor. You have even 12v12 instead of 8v8 and bigger Battleground maps. 

This is what I dont understand with such a budget.
