Guild Wars 2 is targeting an audience that you are NOT part of, get over it and move on. There will be other companies/games that will target your style of play ArenaNet's Guild Wars 2 is not one of them. It's like complaining an RPG doesn't have enough FPS so it's going to "fail" and this is simply not true. Guild Wars has an audience and changing the game to the above will alienate that fan base.

 

The game you might be looking for is called ArcheAge but don't expect that to release in the next couple of years. Until then there is EvE or better yet (as they are closer to what you mentioned above) Mortal Online or Darkfall.

Community is built by striving to accomplish like-minded goals.

A few examples:

AC2 - folks would supply (build) a forge so that it could be used to craft.  Also, folks could find musical instruments from killing mobs and hang out together around a campfire and create songs.   Others would just sit around and listen and take a moment to enjoy the music.   There was collision detection...so you could use rocks and trees to hide behind or avoid being hit by mobs.  You could request and pay another player character for transports to other cities.  You could buff each other.   (many of these things changed because players took advantage of them or cried about them...BUFFBOTS being an example.)

EQ - folks would help each other out of the blue.  Max level characters would visit the newbie areas to give away old gear or advice or buffs.   From the first moment I played, I felt the community involvement.  Building a good or bad reputation had consequences and was important.

 

I believe that 'building' in an mmo gives you the perception of involvement and 'ownership' and builds community.   'Building' in this sense could mean reputation, a structure, a great guild (perhaps known for their involvement in the community), fame or fortune.

I wouldn't exactly call a game that has to merge servers a success. And I wouldn't call a game a month old a success either. And good features are not exclusive to sandbox games, they're standalone good features. Stop using "but its not a sandbox" as an excuse as to why GW2 is lacking key features.

As in League of Legends? Yeah, the Structured PvP does seem to appeal to the MoBA crowd, with the different game modes and maps to choose from. The setup is also kinda like FPS lobby games, although it's not a shooter.

Because he's not just talking about being able to 'build houses'. He's talking about being able to build them anywhere you want, provided there is space. He's talking about having a game that exists entirely on one server.

Please, show me a game this popular in the last 10 years that released with both of those features? Afaik the 2nd criteria stopped being physically possible once MMOs got more than 100k people playing them, and stopped being 2d. As for building houses anywhere, that is an easily exploitable load on the servers.

The reason this form of housing isn't themepark, is because themepark games rely on scripted events, and you can't have scripted events if people are building houses on them. While it would be cool to build a town and then have a dragon spawn to whipe it out, there is such a thing as limits when it comes to technology, time, and money. It would take a lot just to create that type of possibilty, for very little outcome as a result (aka inefficient use of resources).

Furthermore, when did this feature because so 'key' to an MMO, because I've only ever seen a very small handful of MMOs that have either of these features, and most of those are already dead.

It sounds to me like you are looking at GW2 and wanting it to be EvE. EvE is EvE, GW2 is GW2. Its ok that they are different. Variety is good.

I could actually get on-board with this. EQ2 had some really nice features that kind of got lost to other MMOs. I just wish SOE wasn't running that game.

While housing really isn't that essential to GW2, I'm sure they can expand on that feature in the future, and it would be a feature I'd love to see. Even if I have to buy an expansion for it. I also hope they eventually increase the ways in which you can customize a keep in WvWvW. It would be nice to adjust the layout somewhat, or add walls / reinforce doors / increase the number of guards and their patrol routes / etc.
