Originally posted by Kimmyboy Actually, plenty of people accent games without an AH, without phasing, and without the moronic anti social LFG tools of WoW.
Phasing, and cross server play RUIN the feel of virtual worlds, as does instancing. I had never met a person until today who actually thought the LFG tool was a good idea.
And I haven't seen an MMO use loading screens since 1999... are there some out there that do? LotRO and WoW are the only games I can think of with painted backgrounds. Maybe AoC.

Originally posted by Kimmyboy Er.. yeah never had an issue with having real life friends on a different server. And if I did, it wasn't hard to transfer over. Pretty much all my real life friends if we play the same game, we're on the same server. Was fixing such a small almost nonexistant problem worth shattering the already feeble and antisocial community WoW had going? No. But, WoW is pretty much a singleplayer game nowadays anyway. |

The game world might as well not exist because its all instanced now and you just warp from point to point. It's so far removed from what an MMO is how anyone can argue otherwise baffles me. Introducing anti social features like that LFG tool (and oh yes, its anti social) into a genre that is all about shared virtual worlds, is so backwards it shouldn't have to be explained. |

Originally posted by xion12121 It's funny you said that, I thought I was the only one. In fact it was 7 months since I unsubscribed from WoW, it took me a month of Swotor to relight my cravings for a good Themepark MMO, so I subscribed again to WoW for a whole year (and got Diablo 3 for free as a bonus).
I strongly believe that developers still don't get it. WoW is still the best Themepark around and it has 6 years content, which is a detail many seems to ignore. I hope developers finally understand that people do not want WoW 2 but something different, since WoW is still good enough that players do not need a replacement yet. |

It's hard to disagree with the OP and I'm in the same boat. To me, it feels like a mutli-player game but doesn't have teh MMO feel to it. Something just seems missing or maybe just a little off. I don't know. I'm still playing off and on but I've also picked WoW back up. I was telling a friend... the more I play other MMOs, the more I appreciate WoW. |

Then the same people go back back to WOW? yep this says no one wants another WOW, so very much so.. Seems many never learned that it's not about what you say, it's what you do that matters.

I only really played WoW when WoTLK released. I mean, I did try it out Vanilla and BC, but the Lich King lore is what made me actually stomach the quest grinding to get to max level. So I'm in no way a WoW fan, nor do I ever plan on going back to that game. However, when playing SWTOR I also started fantasizing about playing WoW. Mainly because of WoW's open world, and I missed that feeling while playing SWTOR. I'm not going to play WoW, because I can't stand that game, but it did teach me that I don't like multiple instances of the same world (ie. Coruscant 1 & 2). |

Originally posted by Distopia If you look at my posts back 1 year ago, you will understand that I am one of the few that actually knew Swtor was going to be a single player game with online features (against the thousands of Fanboys declaring Swtor the WoW killer). I also said I would have bougth it and played it for a month as if it was Kotor 3. So I did. So I knew more than anyone what to expect from Swtor.
Having said that, nothing stopped Bioware to surprise me and actually making a real MMORPG............unfortunately that didn't happen, for the reasons I explained many times. Which is a shame. Another great IP wasted (after Star Trek) |

The irony being WoW is much more linear, instanced (i.e. phased) and single player focused, since 4.0 than SWTOR is.
Try actually levelling a character in WoW (these days). You hardly see anyone due to phasing, even in the same zone, and you are given a hand full of quests at a time (usually with additional phasing occurring between them). Get out of sync with anyone, and you can't see them. Exploration is just as affected (i.e. you see next to nobody).
Also, yes I play WoW and like it. However I think someone needs to remove his rose tinted glasses.

Originally posted by ste2000 I basically bought it for the same reasons, (something other than the tagline of the game) I bought it for my guild (we hadn't been together since NGE in this capacity). That part was great, the story was decent so I don't feel ripped off. If you knew what you were getting, good on you, and you can be excused for the above if you understand regardless of your reasoning, you have contributed to another successful pay day for a WOW-like. Originally posted by grapevine Saying that WoW is better than Swtor doesn't mean having a rose tintented pair of glasses, in fact it just confirm how bad the MMO industry had become. I am aware that WoW is now super phased and what you said is true...........yet playing WoW ( 7 y/o ) feels much better than playing a brand new "MMO" like Swtor. To me that's worrying. And the fact that developers still insists in doing just that kind of game is just pathetic, after evidence that no themepark game after its first month has a subscription base that can reach the million mark (let alone the 11 million of WoW)
PS: I am not a WoW fanboy either since my favourite genre is Sandbox, but I am kinda forced to play WoW because there is no AAA Sandbox around and WoW is the best Themepark available at the moment. |

If you compare what is actually available, SWTOR wins over WoW, for a veteran WoW player. Its something new, its more polished than WoW was at release and actually has more end game content than WoW currently has. From my perspective I log in to WoW these days for two reasons: -
1) My friends and the character I've become attached to.
2) To play the single raid they currently have available for veteran players (i.e. DS).
Other than for those, there's nothing really to do.

As i suspected, some of you have no grasp of the english language, it's uses or a comprehension of "sensationalism". I fully understand why he returned to WoW. I understand completely that different people enjoy different things. What I don't get is how a game can "DRIVE" you to do something.
it's all about semantics. I really don't care what people choose to play, or not play, choice is great and enjoyment is subjective. |

I'm with you I played SWTOR for a couple weeks and was stoked, but after the cinematics/cut-scenes and it did end up feeling like like I was playing alone on empty worlds. I had a cold/lifeless feeling: no immersion and I went back to wow. Call wow old/been there done it/ call it a lobby game if you want, but wow works and you get that epic feeling like you are ina a world WITH others, things feel alive and I get the immersive feeling that SWTOR lacks. WOW can be a lobby game IF you want to play it that way, although you dont have to play it that way. I am leveling by quests alone on a paladin I started, I will do no dungeons/battlegrounds to gain experience. I am taking my time to READ the quests & taking my time to craft materials to sell and to use. I have no interest in PVP also. WOW gives you many different ways to play and thats the great thing. You can join guilds and group with people you know, you dont have to group w/ the dungeon finder. SWTOR's way of grouping is horrible.
At the end of the day I say to each his own: you should play the game you enjoy whatever it is.

On the bright side the honeymoon is over, all the wow players are going back to wow, and I am fine with that. Most of them claim they hate wow, go looking for the next best thing then go back. However I am fine with that if you don't like the game then move on instead of being a cry baby about it just move back. the amount of qq about swtor is the reason I only visit this site once or twice a week. I am firmly convinced that the folks who use this site now days hate all the games they play. |
