Originally posted by Serenes Because of the work he has put down over so many years for free for the community. I dont know what you would call mechanics, but introducing a vast amount of heroes, items, map changes etc. and balancing all these is a big deal. Blizzard provided the bricks, all kudos to them, but dota is a result of the work and enjoyment of the community. To secure the future of the game and the name i would rather have it given to a freetime modder than a Blizzard. As a long time dota player i want dota to be dota... guess that doesnt make sense, but if Blizzard gets to use the trademark dota isnt dota anymore. |

This just shows how pathetic Blizzard have become. They aren't the old company I knew and loved. They have no claim to the name of DoTA. They may have claim to the ASSETS used in the original DoTA, but DoTA itself is not theirs. Valve have this one easily. Besides. DoTA2 looks better than 'Blizzard DoTA' MMO's played: Ragnarok Online (For years), WoW (for a few weeks only), Guild Wars, Lineage 2, Eve, Allods, Shattered Galaxy, 9 Dragons, City of Heroes, City of Villains, Star Trek Online (Got someone ELSE to pay for it), Champions Online (Someone else paid), Dofus, Dragonica, LOTRO, DDO and more... A LOT more. I've played good AND bad. The bad didn't last long. :P |

You are the only patethic here! Blizzard does not want to register the name of DOTA! They want to stop Valve registering DOTA name. Blizzards want the name DOTA to be used freely , without any trademarks/copyrights/etc issues over someone who uses the name, while Valve is trying to make the opposite. If till now you could create Tyroki DOTA, a browser game ( just an exemple ) , you couldn't do this anymore ( In case Valve will win ). Got it? Well blizzard owns everything and anything created using their editors, its in their eula. So the creators have 0 claim to anything. They are just prevent anyone from claiming the trademark, blizzard has its own dota but made it distinct from the fan versions. |

Erm, they never said they want DOTA to be registered under the Blizzard company! They are talking about who has the most rights for the DOTA name. And yes, Blizzard has the most rights to use the name, but even so , they didn't tried to registered it! Well, this untill Valve jumped in and if Valve does not win, I hope Blizzard will take it. Years of promoting and supporting DOTA does not give them any rights? And now someone else come and take the already known name and start making use of it just to make a big profit because of Blizzard? Wouldn't you be mad if you would promote a *1)free service for the paste 7 years and then someone comes and take it? 1) Free service subject to W3 and Blizzard policy. You can play DOTA mod for free if you own a W3 game copy. True, Blizzard did won money with DOTA , but so did the creator! DOTA has a name associated with W3 Blizzard and that's saying alot. Give me an already promoted mod/game/name by Blizzard, and I will win alot of cash. Who wouldn't? But it is fair? Reporter: What's behind Blizzard success, and how do you make your gamers happy? |

Originally posted by Aori I know Blizzard is making its own ''Blizzard Dota'', but it is as similiar to the original dota as LoL is to the same game. Dota 2 (Valve) is a continuation of the original dota game, while Blizzard Dota is gonna be a different game. EDIT: This is why i want Icefrog, and therefor Valve, to be able to use the Dota name. As would any dota player that wants to continue to play the game in the future. |

valve is greedy when trying to take DOTA for themself. i'm on blizzard side this time. DOTA is simply a mod/copy of warcraft 3. you can deny it all you want but 90% of everything in DOTA is identical to WC3. games might have some point similar, but not 90% similar. if this is allowed, then maybe i'll start making private server of all great MMORPG games and name them differently to make them MY OWN GAME. could be Defend of Warcraft , Defend of The Old Republic, Defend of Rift , Defend of .....Quest 2. some of my friends in china really good at this. |

cant the maker of the dota mod just rename the warcraft 3 dota mod to something different, so there wouldnt be any trademark infringment, cant sue for dota 2 if dota1 isnt named dota.... |

HAHA, are those guys at Blizzard kidding or what? Dota is a genre by itself, at least a sub genre of RTS, and is definitely not attached to Blizzard in anyway. First it was a mod, but was so different than an rts game it gain his own reputation as a genre... It would be as if RG tomorrow decide all the mmo belong to him, that would be ridiculous. And if i'm not wrong the guys that invented the mod work for valve now, and never worked for Blizzard to begin with since it was player made mode. Sometime you really wish the law could turn against the people using it in such an abusive manner, just to make people understand law is not made to offend people but defend them. |

Valve is stupid if they didn't think this would happen.
Next we'll see Valve creating an MMO called "World of Portalcraft."
Big companies are usually smart enough to avoid even risking copy right infringement. |
