I think you are right... I imagine that I'm still 'bitter' about the fact that I'd aranged to play TOR, with my buddies back on Fridayl... these are friends that live far away, and we really aren't able to get together often, so I was really looking forward to this play time on the weekend, that we'd all planned for... so, I have all my caffinated energy drinks out, Head set out, in Ventrillo, we are running along doing flash points and havging a blast, and 'boom' 

 "15 minutes for a 5 hour down time" 

 So, I logged out mad, threw a tizzy fit, and have been acting quite immature since then... canceling my account (on a game that I love) and looking for other things that might be 'wrong' with the game...  hense this thread.

 

Yep, I can understand that!  It's similar to an issue that LotRO folks on the other side of the pond tend to have even some 5 years out:  scheduled downtime during the morning/day here in the state really cuts into their prime time!  They pay just as much as we do, yet, they usually lose an entire evening every time LotRO goes down for maint.!

In all fairness, the 80% retention rate was being tossed around by goobers on forums not BW.

1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.

2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

The problem is that whenever they want to take down the server, they can just give an announcement  "maintenance starting in 5 minutes" and then consider it to be scheduled . That's the problem with how "scheduled maintenance" is defined and it gives a wrong picture of how things are unless you exactly know the technical definition of "scheduled maintenance", which I doubt investors do.

That's not a problem, it's the way things are.  If they decide to take the servers down to patch an exploit then it's scheduled and not counted.

If you want an example of what they're talking about I was able to get into the Tera EU beta test last weekend.  1 min after the servers went up they crashed and they were never able to get them back up that weekend.  THAT is what they're talking about. 

Taking down the servers for a maintenance or a patch is not unexpected downtime, even if it's done to fix an unexpected bug in the last patch.

Yeah, servers surprisingly never seemed to be down when I played, except for scheduled maintenance. They certainly know how to keep their servers stable.

The game has only been out what... 2 months? So I'd be surprised if they were below 99.5% already.

I have to agree this really does feel like overreaching. The servers do seem really stable to me.

I have no clue if their percentage is true or not and frankly I don't care. Haven't seen any issues that would make me want to take them to task over it anyways.

Really? And those were also game servers in the first month(s) after their going live catering to 2 million+ people ? Hmm, interesting.

 The game has had 7.2 hours of downtime since launch?  When did this happen?  They must be overstating their downtime just to make sure it's not inflated.  I have not heard of a single minute of server instability since December 13th.

By this chart, WOW's uptime at launch was close to 80%.

Yeah, 99.5% is definately NOT anything to write home about Operations wise. Probably not all that unexpected given the kind of massive scaling issues their infrastructure must have and the kind of complicated archetecture that MMO's tend to demand....but not really the sort of figure any Network Engineer would actualy WANT to have on his resume.

I can confirm directly that most SLA's call for a MINIMUM 99.9%....and for critical systems it's usualy 99.99% or higher.

WOW's launch problems were notorious. Definately not a bar to measure anything by. Though you do have understand that High Availability services have come a VERY long way since WOW was launched. Your options and costs for implimenting High Availablity are way different today then even just a few years ago.

Given the complexity of archectecture that TOR likely has and it's scale of use....99.5% is understandable....but it's definately NOT something any Network Engineer should expect to win a blue ribbon for, either.

The servers themsevle are up outside of maintaince times. I will say that is pretty true, the server is stable and doens't crash every 10 or 15 minutes.

Now the actual turn-around on their maintaince to up-time is the big tell. How many patches are you guys putting in on week?

They sometimes can put 2 to 3 and even 4 seperate patches out in one 7 day week. Not schedualed stuff, not even "Oh we didnt expect that to happen..", but more "Ohshits" type of patching. Absolutely absurd..

PM before you report at least or you could just block.

I just had to call BS on that little tidbit - it cracked me up, that they wanted to 'float' that little factoid accross their leader board of 'positive' points to look at.  

I'm sure it made a nice power point slide, but still C'mon, ask any of the players if they think that it's fair to call 'scheduled maintenance' something that happens at (what seems to them,) a drop of a hat.

Scheduled maintenance, is that time on Tuesdays that you try to do your patch in... THAT is scheduled maintenance, all that other down time, that happens durring the week?  that's doesn't get to count in your metric.

 

Your investors should really clarify what they mean by 'scheduled maintenance' because by golly I doubt it's %99.5 up time, by their standards.

Or at least have just a 'how much Down Time' was there this week / month stat, and measure the improvments that way.

I'd write more, but I need to logg in and do my daily Space missions... inspite of the claim of %99.5 uptime outside of scheduled maintenance, the game is EXTREAMLY fun to play!

 

I love ToR, I just dislike such rediculous 'spin' on the stats.

this isn't even good, its amazing how a bunch of so called nerds actully know squat about the actual IT industry.

 

Its called the 5 nines of reliability, a mission ciritical device should be up 99.999% of the time. 

 

google is your friend, IT encompasses a hell of alot more that your ability to install a video card.  there is a reason there is a term config monkey.
