Hi folks! I just logged into my account, as there were 2 of my 4 chars below 20 and i wanted to try their new F2P thing plus check some other stuff. As expected, i was able to log in on those chars and run around some, noticed that i still like the game despite not liking Trion that much anymore. Then i tried to create a new character, what to my surprise i couldn't do...hmm.Maybe a total of 4 is max. per server, i don't remember. So i deleted a lvl6 char to free up some space, but still couldn't create a new char. I switched to some other shard and could make a new char there. Is there any restriction on certain shards no allowing to create new trial chars? I thought that trials can join any server? I'm asking here since i can't post on the official forums. They should enable the newcomer-forum for trial accounts. |

I'm using Rift Lite atm and have no problems creating chars wherever I want, even transferring them.
Then again, I've had an active subscription in the past and that might change the rules of it, since there's one server dedicated to trial people and I guess the server would be kinda pointless if everyone could create chars wherever.
The only restriction I found until now is the inability to equip epic or greater equip (meaning purple or better). It seems pretty free to me, haven't seen any disabled feature past that, I can even use the Auction House and chat which is awesome.
Now if they added character combat voices... *drools* |

I was under the impression if you had characters prior to Rift Lite below level 20 you could play them on their normal servers. To create a new character it would have to be on a specifically designated one. |

Thanks for your replies. It's weird though, i can't create any chars on my previous server (=subbed at that time). But i can create chars on every other server and transfer them to my original shard.

There's some limits to the game if you don't want to pay. You can only have 2 characters per server with a maximum of level 20. If you play on an old account with more, you can't create another character on that server "Well, there was a time when I was quick to judge others based on what little I'd heard. But... traveling with even the worst, slimiest, smelliest of tieflings and no-honor tree-worshipping elves has taught me some of them are all right." -Khelgar Ironfist |

It's similar to the new Aion, though Aion won't have level limit.
I hope both Aion and Rift gain some playerbase with this move, they're both nice games (though I'm not big a fan of NCSoft), and especially Rift that's always updating and improving.
If only Rift would improve the combat feel (some animations, sounds)... |

well it seems to have an effect, population in the starter zones is booming (for a game that focusses on endgame) and the curves on almost all servers are quite a bit in the green (population curves that is) |

Yeah when you see games that say "Free to play" you need to look carefully because they aren't entirely free. A lot of games say its free but always end up having retrictions on it, so the way I see it... it isn't free. |

Originally posted by Mallen91 ^ LOL, it's meant to give new and old players a feel for the game, why would a developer offer people the game free and unlimited? Also if your playing the client and didn't pay for it = it is free, just not free your way. I'm taking a shot of vodka every time I see a reference to a game being a WoW or Diablo clone. |

You can experience pretty much everything in game (except raids and higher content ofc), so the 2 characters per server limitation (and you can transfer them after lvl 15 anyway) + inability to post in the AH + inability to use epic+ equipment don't really hinder you.
Also it's a protection against bots \ China farmers that would otherwise probably fill the low level market.
In Aion you still have the premium features that you pay for, if you don't have at least a veteran's account you're still a bit limited (although you can reach max level). |

No, thats a 'trial'. If you don't mean free to play then don't say free to play. Why do you support the industry in using lies? |

Originally posted by Vesavius As far as I know Rift isn't lying, it doesn't have "free to play" anywhere in the site. What's advertised is "play for free" and listing the level restriction right below, in http://eu.riftgame.com/en/lite/ Also in the main site it says "levels 1-20 free". There's no misleading there, so it's cool. Also, most new people won't notice the other restrictions anyway (maybe except the 2 chars created per server, but if they stick around that much to notice that they'll probably try a month sub). I'm playing Lite right now (leveling a couple chars) and I don't feel I'm missing out on anything. I'm also waiting for Aion free so I can try, TSW and GW2, but seeing Rift being developed \ improved this fast it might handle itself pretty well until then. |

1) Did you pay for Rift? 2) Are you subbed to Rift? 3) Are you playing Rift? No + No + Yes = Free to play
BTW check out Eve Online and it's 14 day Free Trial, that's a trial. I'm taking a shot of vodka every time I see a reference to a game being a WoW or Diablo clone. |
