Originally posted by Charas I think people are getting a little confused about what ability delay is. This issue effects everybody, whether in pvp or pve. The ability delay is tied to animation mechanics of abilities. In SWTOR, abilities are triggered when the animation of said ability is completed. However, many of the animations are actually LONGER then the cast time of the ability, leaving a weird state of limbo a player cannot use his next ability until the previous ability animation is done. I will write up a quick example: Ability "A" takes 2.0 seconds to cast but has a 2.5 second animation. Ability B is an instant cast spell with a 1.0 cast animation. Player cast ability A. After 2.0 seconds, player wants to cast ability B. However, player must wait an extra .5 seconds before he can cast ability B because the animation of ability A is not finished yet. In WoW, cast time > ability animation. That causes some abilities to clip, but ultimately leads to a tighter, more fluid gameplay. Compare this WoW video with this SWTOR video to see how in SWTOR ability delay keeps the player from not mounting up despite the cast bar being complete. |

So......this bug forces players to not spam keys?? Amazing.
I hope they fix this to make no set global cooldown, but instead control but the length of the animation. Also the closer you activate the next skill within the end of the animation, say half a sec or so, you have a higher chance to crit. How much WoW could a WoWhater hate, if a WoWhater could hate WoW? |

Originally posted by TheHavok Why not just adjust the Cast times than? I rather have my animation to be done before i start a new action so the best way would be to give ability A a 2.5 sec cast time and all would be fixed XD |

I have to say this problem has been very annoying on my Sith Warrior. It's mostly noticable with retaliation and other instant abilities, either they get stuck and don't fire off (animation gets half done and just repeats itself no matter how many times I spam it) or they take up GCD in some cases. It's extremely noticeable when you are about to deal the killing blow, your abilities just stall until he dies (with the slow attacks of the juggernaut it's a bit more noticeable). |

Originally posted by TheHavok I see your point however i do believe it would be better that way after all your character is performing an action if its castin a shock throwing a granade or stabing someone in the back for me instant only means that the ability starts right aftyer i use it not 2 sec after i use it like a 2 sec ability would that i have to wait .5 sec or even 1 sec till the animation is done before i can use a new one only make it feel more real to me. Maybe i am alone with this feeling but i like the fact that animations mean something i cant just stop midway in my granade throw and still expect the granade to be thrown maybe thats why i didnt notice any ability lag so far couse i dont just smash my buttons but actually pay attention to whats going on well or i am just lucky for some reason and dont have any ability delay probs dunno |

Originally posted by paterah Try to stop spamming maybe?? I noticed on my sniper that i would stop throwing my granade halfway if i would spam the button for it its like the ability would start activating new every time i hit the button That of course isnt a big prob since just playing controlled without mindless spamming solved that prob for me np i would not call that an ability delay to begin with its more like a player mistake |

Combat with Jedi Consular felt more fluid than BH but delay was present in both cases. Main difference was that BH abilities would very often fail to trigger which almost never happened with my JC.

Originally posted by Doomedfox The combat is set up in a way, like most MMOs, where the basic instict is to spam the buttons so this an unreasonable expectation especially since similar games do it right. But since Bioware admitted to the issue I'm just gonna have to wait till it's fixed. |

I'm glad he posted this video because it really ruins PvP for me. I can't tell you how many times I've had those kinds of things happen. It's extremely frustrating. Hopefully they really do have a fix and aren't giving the typical PR talk. They also said that we were going to be blown away by endgame pvp - and we all know what Illum is like. |

I noticed this too I spam and nothing goes off but if I hit it once it does. I think everytime you spam it sends a new message and cancels the one before and as a result nothing goes off in the end.

Originally posted by paterah I never felt urged to spam my buttons knowing it would be on a colldown it seemed pointless to spam the button i will agree that in stress situations like maybe a heated pvp match it can happen to spam a button but after i realized it would only make me waste my abilitys i learned my lesson and refrrained from spamming the buttons. I do not say that they dont need to fix it but its just not as bad a problem as you make it out to be l2p controlled playing instead of wild spamming will solve your probs if you now say that you are not capabel of playing in a calm controlled manner well thats your prob and one of the reasons i hope they will fix it so that everyone will be able to enjoy the game regardless of there skill level. |

Originally posted by Doomedfox One workaround to this is sluggish playstyle. If you just sit back and press skills in a slow manner, you will never see any delay or unexecuted skills. If you play more intensively and try to use skills as fast as you should be able to, the gameplay changes drastically. For example, on my sorc I normally do following: 1. Target pet and cast Static Barrier on it 2. Target a mob and send pet to it by pressing ctrl+1, immediately after that start casting Lightning Strike 3. Once the Lightning Strike has executed, either Static Barrier (on-self), Force Speed+Overload multiple mobs or Affliction+Force Lightning When everything goes smooth and I manage to time all attacks right, the fight is really fluent and gives a great feedback. The thing is, it too often doesn't go well. Things that go wrong and ruin the feeling are: 1. Pet doesn't attack immediately, but after the Lightning Strike has finished and the mob targetted me 2. Lightning Strike delays and when I was supposed to be shielding myself I'm starting to cast the LS 3. Overload doesn't do the pushback 4. Affliction doesn't apply and/or Force Lightning doesn't start to channel It's very annoying and really takes away from the feeling. |

Originally posted by Doomedfox I'm sorry but as a hardcore PvPer I can't just not spam the buttons in hope of the abilities working. I want to beat the enemy with the highest health possible or have a chance to beat them in a situation I would otherwise lose. To do this I must ensure I don't lose precious time between attack intervals and the only way to do this is to spam the next ability. The ability queue in the options won't do for me either cause I might change my time on what ability I want to fire in the next 0.5 or 1 second. I'm not sure how to explain it better. |

Originally posted by RizelStar Actually you guys are wrong on several levels. During other clients that were used during the testing and beta, this ability lag was not a problem at all, nor did it exsist. When I beta tested the game before the November 24th client that we're now using, I did not have any ability lag issues, nor did abilitys on my JK's or SW's look like he was doing a double swing or a double smash ect. When the game released, these problems became aware to all, and they have announced that in the next patch or 2, there will be fixes. Its not a hardcoded issue, its something else entierly. I sincerly doubt they would have a issue like this that went on for years and not fix it, not with the money and time they have invested, and to think otherwise is sheer stupidity. These problems will be fixed fast, and its there main concern atm. Read this and see for yourself.. http://www.swtor.com/blog/georg-zoeller-gives-update-ability-delay |

Originally posted by TheHavok I have played the game for a couple of hundred hours, and in pve I don't have this problem. I have it severely in pvp, its one of the main reasons I stop playing pvp after 2 or so matches. However, in pve, I don't have any ability delay. As soon as I press the button I see my character starting to perform the ability. However, sometimes in pvp it doesn't even register when I press the button. Sometimes its up to a 3 second delay, but i've always thought this was just server lag in pvp, where something goes horribly wrong when more than 5 people get together..lol. The only thing I've ever noticed in pve that could even be considered ability delay is for the Trooper ability volley where after pressing the button you see your character change their stance and get set up for the shot, but the channeling bar is going the whole time and by the time the bar is at zero all the volleys have fired, so it doesn't really bother me. |
