MMO's and lack of jumping are usually a turn off for me. I'm tempted NOT to buy Kingdoms of Amalur over it too. |

1. The inability to jump. … It would look rather weird if you could jump in EVE-online or even Perpetuum online. But yes it is extraordinary weird human(oid) avatars can’t perform the most basic of our movements. Though this looks rather a problem of “realism” more then anything else. Thing is ... most of us would have expected that, while you could mildly forgive this in the past, what with the computers we had back then and so on, nowadays they would consider this the norm and not a feature. 2. Gender-locked classes. … basically there is no real gender in games. Female just “look” female, and sometimes they even look “more” female then real women, and that’s it. Sometimes the only reason there is a female “version” is to show of breasts and getting a +18 rating. The rest is unisex. Reason why I as male play much of the time a female character off course. Why would you be running around with overcompensated macho-types when you can run around being a beauty, huh ? 3. Lack of classes. Let me put a question mark here “?”. Not that what you are telling is not entirely true, but it is not so certain I can agree. It all depends how these classes are being build, what their progression is and how the other mechanics of the game are. I would rather have one class, which has a perfect progression with which I feel comfortable with, then 10 classes of uninteresting types which change only in minor things and were progression is only more of the same. 4. Classless, skill-based character builds. Yes … and no. It is as I wrote in “3.” all depends on how the game planned the progression. I have no recollection if or what games made the error of unbalancing the character. If this is true then off course you are right. But on skills I have my own idea:”players play games, computers should only let them play. So it should be the skill/style of the player which defines the class, not the computer.” 5. Limited options. LOL ! Isn’t this why the “console” system were invented ? To have all the same mediocre stuff ? Who said PC-games are dead ? The only sensible logic thing here is to make a graphic “layer” between hardware and software. DirectX was supposed to be the interface which would make an abstraction between the two. I think engine builders have a hard time building anything fancy around the mess created by MicroSoft and Xbox and PS3, mobile version, tablet version, … what is next ? Washing machines ? GUI Functionality ! Adaptable to your own preferences ! Easy to be used and without fuss ! After that it can be with ornamentation extra-ordinair, but make it usable first ! I’ll take it for granted this means that you can have any command anywhere on the screen, even if it does not make any sense, it is the player who will have to be using it. If he wants to control the keyboard with his feets, the mouse with his mouth or perhaps he wants to stick the joystick in his Controls/hotkeys You went very lightly over this problem, but actually, my remark here would be: no matter how you want to play, you should be able to do so. Interfacing as in connecting the human physiognomy to the computer is key to the comfort and in some cases even the health of the user. Camera control In real life, we humans have other sensor inputs from our body. Feeling, smelling and a sense of how our body is placed within the environment. Obviously, computers can’t give any of these sensation and sometimes it is a good thing too, especially the smelling. But for the feeling it is prerequisite the computer compensate for the lack of input, which for the sake of realism, is sometimes critical. Here camera control is paramount. 6. Private zones in "MMO"rpgs. What I personally dislike is how the idea of “quality” is lately being ( mis- ) used as an excuse to make even more instances, servers, “private” zones. Admittedly our current equipment, connections, hardware and drivers are not always capable of the most extensive play. They even use the argument “not everybody has highend stuff” against the consumer to get excused of building lesser graphic ! 7. Ugly character models. Players connect differently to the hero(ine) on their screen. They can look at it as an just an actor which they follow and lead on the way. Or it can become an alter ego, a “you” in the virtual world. Our imagination is here key to what you will become in this virtual world. What games should absolutely avoid is to work against any of this. 8. Uninspired content. LOL. There seems to be another common “confuse the player” thing. You know when you get to loot a weapon and you end up with one weapon who does say 30% physical damage and 70% “magical” damage, the other does 70%- 30% damage and the third one is the 50%-50%, 20-80, 10-90, 100-0, 44-66, 23.9-76.1, …. and that is only for your weapon, now for the armor … 9. Absent/Uncaring Mods. Yes, well, if everybody ignored the gold sellers, life would be so immense more simple. So why going trying to chase IPs and keep on banning any goldie-boy ? Most modern "RP" servers To RP or not RP that is the question. I have to think about the poster who reported “spiderman” in Star Wars (!) TOR RP-PVE server and got the remark “why did you report this?”. 10. CRAPPY, overly-complex chat systems. Bah, dunno, What do you call complex ? And is this the “easiest problem” a MMO will face ? It should be functional and help you to communicate. Rated M for Mature - May contain content inappropriate for children |

Hang on. Wait a sec. Uninspired content is a minor annoyance, but HOLY COW, IF I CANT JUMP THEN ITS GAME OVER, MAN! That just......sounds so wrong in so many ways. When did jumping become a feature and good content a tack-on mechanic? I mean, sure, your opinion is your opinion. Respect. But come on....... I wanted to type something really smart as a reply to this subject, but the Scarlet Blade ad got me distracted and I forgot what I wanted to type. |

I don't like having restricted movement of any sort. It's a pretty common complaint and a lot of people hate not having the ability to jump. Ask around... It may not bother everyone, but for quite a lot of people, it's a pretty serious offense. MMORPGs are supposed to be about immersion and not being able to take shortcuts or jump on obstacles for tactical combat advantage is really annoying for me. |

We're actually probably lucky about that; the fact that the production value of the games rates so importantly with so many players is why we get games with the production value of WoW and Rift and the like. @40Hz: Peace, Dude :) |

Yes putting in countless hours on real life graphics means less time on content and the crucial stuff that are SUPPOSE to be in a MMO. When I see a graphically enhanced MMO being release , the first thing that comes to mind is : "I bet this is gonna suck" or "I bet I'll max out in under a month without even trying" I've said it before and I'll say it again , Devs need to stop releasing real life graphics at launch and work more on content and playability. When those are well executed THEN they can start working on graphics. |

I just can't believe you would stick to playing an MMO because you can jump, even though the content is "meh" at best? More important for me is Can I change the gameworld like can I put my stuff on the ground? Collision detection is also something I prefer to have

Welcome back 40Hz, and what a great read.
I opened the thread with few expectations, but point after point I ended up nodding to myself.
Im a bit to games like Seinfeld is to dating women. Always notice the flaws that to some people are meaningless, but for me they can ruin everything. I get turned off and start look for something new.
Point 4 and 10 dont reach my top 10 list, but I fully understand what you mean. Instead I would go for:
4. CashShop with P2Win model (Buy the best armor and 200% xp potions for RL cash) 10. Games with Leet-kid-community where all you see in chat is WTF, LOL, ROFLOCOPTER, PWNZOR and you receive a duel request every 5 minutes. |

Nice post OP, i agree with all that, but from your 10 points the only ones taht kill an mmo for me are: - non jumping ability (taht kills it right there) - heavy instancing, ala GW1, dragon nest, vindictus, divine souls where only towns are the mmo part (major kill). - lack of races and classes (if theres a game with 4 races and 2 or 3 are humans with different skin color and size, i hope you plan to make it F2P because i wont pay for that lazyness). The rest of OP points are just disappointments but i do agree with them. Other very personal game killers and disappointments for me are: - (Game Killer); No open world pvp or almost nonexistent on PVP servers (i've tried instanced and dont like them so i dont do them). - (disappointment): There are gorgeous lakes and rivers and i can't swim? - (game killer): No WASD movement and choppy / clunky mechanics (2 birds in 1 shot here). - (big disappointment but not 100% killer): equipment limitations. Im a fraging hunter, dont force me to use only bows. Give me bows, crossbows, daggers , any 1 handed weapon or give me death. - (All time game killer): everyone regardless of race starts at the same place and do the same things to progress, i find that absurd and total lazyness from devs. I love rolling alts and see how each piece of lore fit together in the big picture). - (big killer): a big game and theres no capital cities or maybe just 1, that sux for me. I strongly believe each race should have a major capital city in its native land (even if the lore says it was destroyed, let us have the damned ruins with some survivors or other settlers trying to rebuild or something), Even non playable races should have a city somewhere or villages with merchants and maybe quests and stuck. Dont give me a game with tents surrounding a campfire in every map(quest hubs) and expect me to stay playing for long). - (50-50): Graphics. Ive said it before. I dont play crap games with good graphics, but i dont play good games with crap graphics either. some games have good graphics but the ground graphics are just plain textureless, flavorless, detail-less, flat.... mostly F2P and show some hay and grass but you torn the camara and its still flat lol.... i wouldnt pay monthly for a sub game like that, but i would play it as F2P. Thats why the 50-50...
i took my time getting that together although i think something is missing, but theres enough. Thats just me and my pickyness with mmos.
