The answer to that was in one of the early Dev interviews (before they stopped letting just anyone talk) how to gear up and get in the mood they watched the original movies over and over and wanted to bring the "iconic" moments & sounds to the player base.

The other characters would be as far removed from tthier ancestors as we are from the earliest human civilsations like ancient egypt . But to be honest if thats the case thier technology hasn't advanced much in 4000 years because a lot of the speeders and driods look like they were made around the time of episode 1 .  :;)

The wheel was invented over 6,000 years ago and the only real difference is they slapped rubber on it, and started making it out of metal. I mean, seriously.. we haven't innovated enough in 6k years to come up with something better than the wheel? Or look at camp fires. The only difference is now we put a puff of sugar and air on the stick, instead of cave bear entrails. We now live in caves of stone AND wood. Modern robots/ drones are still mostly just souped-up R/C gadgets like we played with as kids.  Seriously, where's the innovation?

Because Star Wars is not the galaxy we know, OF COURSE there should be suspended belief. I mean look at the fish aliens. How in the world could they survive without keeping their skin at least moist, much less that whole water breathing thing. And that whole planet exploding without damaging orbitng star ships? Seriously?

Lol, I loved that. 

Consider that the planets where the tech is most used arent the ones where it's manufactured. I can play with my blackberry, make calls ect. but I couldn't make one from scratch. Most of the galaxy seems to buy stuff from the main importers or criminals but if it cost too much for that speeder bike, get yourself down to Bob's Banthas and he'll HOOK U UP!
