I think you're behind in info: next to SWTOR, also GW2 and TSW will have more VO and cutscenes than any MMO before had.

The main difference is that, unlike in SW:TOR, in those games VOs and cutscenes are used to add some flavor to the GAME rather than adding some game to the almighty STORY which is what BW's design philosophy seems to be.

I can recall a GW2 dev's intreview where the guy said that yes, they will add a lot of cutscenes and VOs but never to the detriment of the game flow. In fact he said that while they are nice to have, they can become annoying and that's why they, as a rule, won't have many cutscenes lasting for more than 10 seconds at most, especially in group content.

Decline in what? That gives no data on sales. subscriptons, or anything with any meaning whatsoever. They've discovered people play a game less the longer they've had it. Especially during the first month. There's an earth shattering revelation for ya. Do people really expect everyone who buys a game will play it five hours a day for eternity?

Add to that factor that people started playing the game DURING THE FLIPPING HOLIDAYS, and the almost 40% seems even less important.

In my not so humble opinion, the VO questing is the meat of this game. In fact I have to say that as an MMORPG SWTOR is one of the best single player RPGs out there. Once people burn through the VO content I don't feel the actual MMO content is good enough in the games current state to keep a lot of gamers enthused for a great length of time.

However I do think that the single player VO content will last quite a few players longer than a month. Most of the people that leave on the 21st will be the same MMO locusts and lookie loos, you get when every game comes out. I'd recommend waiting three to six months to see what impact this game has made on the MMO world.

I saw a guy wearing a t-shirt that read "I'm with Stupid" . . . he was alone.

Why are TOR fans so scared of putting TOR in the 2012 catagory for competing with those games? You guys got the game released in December by a pure technicality and judging from the bugs and completely unfinished GTN and piss poor state of pvp it was too soon.

Where do you see people being scared of TOR competing with other games in 2012? All MMO's are competing with eachother in 2012, regardless what year they were launched.

TOR fans have this bad habit of pulling out server numbers and hype and thinking that equals success. I doubt EA has broken even yet on their money invested because even they said they have to maintain 500k for 6 months which has not happened yet.

I'll call it a success when the game has more then 4 servers after 12 months.

I think that both critics as fans have used server info to support the point they're trying to make, from what I've seen so far on these forums. 500k for 6 months? This is the first time I hear about this, is this a new, recent statement? If so, do you have a quote?

I don't know much they need to have recovered their initial costs, but I think what the initial sales will end up to be has also a large influence on it, and what their projections of it were.

The 21st is not "D-Day" for sub numbers, simply because a huge group of players only got into TOR once they'd unwrapped their xmas presents on the 25th of December. Their "free month" only ends on the 26th.

If anyone wants to predict "the day the world ends", rather pick a date like 30 January. By then it will be much clearer as to how many of the initial rush will not be subbing.

Some people believe the Mayans predicted the end of the world on 21st December 2012.

But perhaps of equal concern is the death of MMOs on 20th December 2011 :D

Or 'MOIST's' as i have just this second thought of calling them
(Massively Online Interactive Story Teller's) lol :)

Don't spoonfeed em', you are only encouraging laziness.

1/13/12 8:40:24 AM#46

That first assumption is a doozy, coming form a hardcore raiding guild, number one on Rexxar for many years, absolutely nobody in guild uses Xfire. You mention Xfire in guild chat and the response is something like..."what would we need that for?"

And then the others, the crowd being marketed to, the new to mmo/causal base certainly has no loayaties to using the program either.

All and all using numbers from a singular application such as Xfire is subjective at best.

Those are all just words, really, people should start to be more sceptical of all statements made by devs, not only of the devs of a game or company they hate/dislike -_-

My point wasn't even about that: VO and cutscenes are used to a far larger extent than any former MMO's in 3 of the top AAA MMO's this year. VO/cutscenes are here to stay, people should get used to it. Which I guess they will in the game(s) they favor.

Some might not acknowledge it when it's used in a game they dislike, but personally I see it as an improvement upon the traditional, textbased quest delivery.

I'm not the biggest fan of SWTOR, but it happened that I got some free time, so i'll be playing 2nd and 3rd month... Nevertheless, all those "naysayers" will be surprised to see how many people will keep playing the game. It's not the great but definitely has something in it. And considering there is nothing good on the market (aside from some niche MMOs) right now, I doubt there will be any fail. At least, unpolished SWTOR is better than polished WoW...

why do people make polls and leave out the most logical answer?

But really Jan 21 doesnt mean anything, if people dont like swtor they have stopped playing it already.  There are probaby some fencers waiting until the first patch, but for the most part what you see now is what youll get, minus 10% or so.

uhm, maybe there is the third group of people who enjoyed the game but get bored come Jan. 21 and does not feel they want to keep paying for what is essentially a co-op RPG?

But its not like Jan 21 is some magic date.  If they are bored, they have stopped playing.  Very, very few people play a game they arent having fun playing just because they can.

SWTOR won't die in a single month, WAR died in 3 months so don't expect any less here. I'm sure they will lose ~50% of their current players in the first month and the 2nd month they will lose another 50%. The real key to how long it takes to die will be the patches. They are releasing a new patch next week(?) in attempt to keep people playing. If in the 2nd month they can produce another content patch that will again help keep some people for another month. The game is just too mediocre when you're not doing a class storyline and the amount of class storyline they can produce in a month will be completed in a few hours. It is an unsustainable MMO model and we knew this for years.

I wonder how many copies were given away as xmas present and how big the drop will be on 25th Jan and just after?

As to the title I think it'll need more than a month to decide

What can you answer to a poster saying the game is going to lost 100% of its subscriptions in two months?

Free to play next week!!!

In any game it doesent take to many people leaving for more to join. It is an MMO after all and if there is less people to play with then there is less to do. PvP, and raid content get less and less. Auction markets get smaller. All which start to bore people and they head to another game. Theres a reason why some of the best MMO games have a very low population. People arent going to sub into a game dont matter how good it is, if there is no one to play with.

Even if they can add new content quickly be it endgame or more class quests (tho I agree this is something i feel will be a huge time sink for the devs) the fact so many of the more basic MMO must have features need work is not going to help any.

The game needs alot of spit and polish done on the likes of its LFG/LFD tools, Auction house, choice of PvP arena, crafting, loot system along with way more level 50 daily missions. Not to mention the huge amount of work the Hero engine looks to need so players can not only run the game without there systems shitting itself but can run in with the real high graphics setting as seen in all the marketing screenshots and videos.

WAR died because it was a shittily made game.

SWTOR will do just fine because A. it is Star Wars. B. It is Star Wars C. Refer to points A and B. It may not be the next evolution of MMO's (wtf that ever means) but it is a solidly built game (troll bait) with proven mechanics.

Does anyone remember the first year of WoW? I do and boy was it rough. SWTOR is already doing better than Blizzard in comparison.

I hope millions are entertained. I hope you, fan of SWTOR, are having fun.

Oh come on, this is hardly the truth and showing respect for MMO history. Themepark MMO model has been the most successful one for many years now, with the top themepark MMO's having larger number of subs than most of the MMO's had before WoW. If it wasn't sustainable, people would have left after the first month or 2, yet what you see is large amounts of gamers staying for longer periods of time than just a few months, sometimes even for years. This sounds hardly as 'unsustainable' to me.

I get that you're probably sick of themepark MMO's and in a wishful thinking kinda way want to regard them as being unsuccessful. This hasn't been the reality though.

On a sidenote, you think that TOR will lose about 50% of its current playerbase this month? That's easy to track, and will be interesting to watch, see if that'll be the case.

But you can keep moving the goalposts back indefinitely, as long as people will pay any attention to your forecasts.

World of Warcraft should not be brought into this.

"Do you remember the first BMW ever made, wow I mean so many issue."

"Ya the new 2012 Kia had no issues on release"

See what I did there.

Wow was something new to the genre, same as EQ, but SWTOR is not new one bit and this could have been released 8 years ago. If it was released 8 years ago it would have been a pretty decent game, but at 2011-2012 standards its a fail.
