Originally posted by Yamota I don't care how technically savvy or highly awarded the engine is. I still think both AoC and Aion look like crap. Combination of color palettes, style, asethetics, etc. TOR looks like Star Wars and it looks like KOTOR, both of which things I truly enjoy. I also think LOTRO looks like crap because the avatars/characters look so out of place compared to the beautiful world, I think EQ2 is so ugly it makes me want to vomit, and I think of all of them Rift might have the best graphics, but the armor models aren't diverse enough. I'm not the guy who drools over tech specs. I'm the guy who hates 120hz TV's because it makes everything look so unnatural. So smooth it looks off. I also like film grain, lens flare, and old school plastic models and dudes in rubber suits in my Sci Fi (original SW trilogy) versus flashy CGI that always looks fake no matter how "good" the CGI is. This has me wondering about the future of "update for expansive space like JTL." If they add that in but with 1980's graphics... Maybe it will be high res. Besides, doesn't everyone expect high res for crying out loud?
Most of the time, due to the graphics being so bad, people just zoom all the way out anyway leaving the game to look like Mythos. Or worse? It's funny because of the "Decieved," video that set it off in the first place. lol. Like, seriously... who does not expect high res graphics this day and age? I mean, are the devs trying to set it up for play on moblie phones/tablets as well?
The game is nothing like I expected and a major letdown, bigtime bummer. Last time I felt like this cogDis was with the conan game. but at least that game had finishing moves/ bare breasts.
Also, I would like to add that the fanboism/ reluctance to admit we spent money and time, is waaaaay obvious! lol it is comical. it's OK though, because I will not go back to that CD of "but, Conan couldnt possibly do me wrong!" |

Not be able to have high res textures at this day and age...laughable to say the least. |

I like to bring back up the major concern of this thread... the major concern is not whether or not the gfx were garbage in the first place I for one thought that they were OK. The major concern is there we were deliberately decieved. BW/EA/LA planned to remove the high rez graphics before the game was launched. They DID NOTinform us of the change during beta. Pretty much anyone who applied to beta got in.... it was a demo plain and simple and in the demo the hi rez graphics were there The screenshots and gameplay videos they posted also showed the same hi rez textures. Therefore it is safe to assume they did not tell us of such a major change before launch because they knew it would hurt launch numbers Many of us feel this is deceptive, misleading and a classic example of false advertisement THAT is the main issue here. "Don't mistake a fun game for a good game... Checkers is fun to play but its not exactly the highest point of gaming design... and definatly not worth $60 plus $15 a month" |

I guess my hate for this game before it launched i was not aware of this. For me the game loads fast, solid and runs fluid. |

I honestly don't really care about the graphics. I think they look alright, but they are not the biggest thing for me. The graphics work for the game and it runs okay for me. Sure, Hi-rez textures would be nice, but I am not going to hack the code and complain like a baby on the forums about it to no end. Overall, I just wish the game lasted a bit longer. I will definitely get my moneys worth in play time out of it, but there is no way the current amount of content will hold my attention for longer than 2 months. It has just been SO EASY and brainless to level up and do just about everything. I am just dissapointed that there is literally zero difficulty in the game from what I have seen so far. Hopefully the end game stuff will be hard, but I have heard of PUGs clearing everything including the raids so far ... so that is pretty unfortunate. |

Originally posted by JeroKane Honestly, please get over it. You don't speak for me in this regard. I personally am not a graphic nazi and the game runs OK on my PC because I'm not rich like some seem to be and able to upgrade my PC every 6 months. This whole texture is moot for me. I care far more about the ability delays and any other bugs in the game. Crying about the graphics and getting on your high horse because you don't like EA for some reason, just stop. I'm actually impressed that they were honest enough to share with us the issue they found with this Hero engine. Most game companies won't say a peep about why certain things won't work or can't be done in their games, usually due to engine issues. So, Bravo EA/Bioware, bravo. |

And I obviously admit that the high res news baffled me. The company should have admitted that this was a tablet/phone game in the first place. |

I more or less agree with your concept. What I have an issue with is the decision here and its where I actually might cancel.
Why would I do that? There is this thing called an "option" and I believe it should be the most important concept to game design.
Take a game like EQ2 which launched 7 years ago... In its graphic options there was this setting as to how many characters around you would be rendered at high quality. Its kind of like options EQ1 had even earlier where you could limit spell effects to a certain quality level... or only display so many effects...
In many instances there are likely just not going to be that many people around you... so everything looks nice. As more people approach you if you have the option ... beyond a point you get the same result BioWare is forcing on you and it has the same effect...
Its the same reasoning they used with the unify chest piece color option. They removed it because as they rationalized... some people turned it on and thought everyone looked the same.
Well there are two factors here...
1) Paying customers should get to choose which option they take
and
2) Some people could simply turn off unify color to chest piece instead of taking it away from everyone... some people liked the option.
In this paticular case the developer is trying to blame render calls for a decision. Well as I said they could have simply added that "feature" as an option. Some people playing TOR probably have thousands of dollars into their gaming rig and could obviously handle much more processing than others.... there is absolutely no reason to force something on everyone by default when it could be an option.
It bothers me because it makes me think about game design in general. We used to get options... now they just decide for us. This is what makes me want to cancel suddenly... I don't need BioWare to decide what my machine can handle. I'm well aware of what my machine can handle.. and I can always upgrade it to handle even more.
The medium setting "bug" was in the game as far back as the play test I did in October of 2010... so apparantly that is one hell of a long duration bug there. So I don't really believe it was a "bug" but rather they decided to adjust their supported textures to support their decision.
Regardless there are plenty of MMO's out there with low / medium and high settings.. even ultra settings. I guess TOR for some reason just can't actually handle it...
My MMO mantra... give me options or go home. |

You toss out insults because you have no leg to stand on and whine louder about someone else expecting more than the people you call whiners expecting to get what they paid for. In short, grow up. The game was misadvertised, is anyone going to win a lawsuit? Of course not. Are people going to feel mistreated and lied to - which will make SWTOR lose even more people. Of course. |

Originally posted by Teala Incorrect, it's not that we're blinded, it's that it was never an issue for most of us. Since the analogies are flying, I'll give you this. I bought a car recently and didn't know it was suppose to have ass warmers in the seats. I didn't know because it really wasn't an issue for me. I don't need ass warmers in the seats... and frankly.. .they make me a bit incomfortable.
It wasn't until a friend of mine bought the same model and told me his had the ass-warmers that I knew anything about the ass-wamers. And furthermore, once I knew about it, I didn't care, cause I love the car the way it is and don't feel that I really need the ass-warmers.... can I say ass-wamer one more time? Nice!
Like I said, I'm no fanboy. I was playing WoW up until this came out and I'm waiting for FFXIV Version 2 and will be playing that. I just think that this game is fun and I don't find the textures to be an issue. Isn't it possible that some of us just don't care? I really was never lied to, I never asked as I didn't care and never read anything about the textures.
I think it funnier that people hate the game and company so much they're making a bigger deal out of this then it is. |
