Crafting system is not seen before. using your companions to craft and to sell your junk for you is new

The companion characters that can create or deny you story arcs based on what you decide.

the first sci fi MMO to have a different type of space combat

This is new for me, not sure about the industry in general. They've created a game where I follow the story line instead of skipping through it. *shrug* I don't think there are new mechanics that have never been done before in place. Bioware just implemented them correctly and not in a half-@ssed manner. < That might be new.

For every large, complex problem, there is a simple, clear solution that also happens to be absolutely wrong.

The premise of this thread is couched in a rhetorical fallacy.  The OP attempts to ascribe a claim to the game that the game itself never made, and then dismiss said game because it doesn't meet his made up claim.

Pure intellectual dishonesty really.

Oh yeah, and it's easy for games to be innovative (Dark Age of Camelot, SWG, etc) when they're literally the first of their genre.  That's like saying Henry Ford was innovative because he made automobiles with roofs.

100% different is very difficult to say but there's plenty of things it does differently from most other mmorpgs

- Companions: not only fighting for you but having a story and a voice, crafting for you, selling your grey items, having an affection stat, able to be decked out in any gear of the right kind, etc. i.e. the most fleshed out companion system in a mmorpg I ever played. (Even though I disliked the idea of needing to use companions before I played SWTOR I can only admit that it really works and is a very fun aspect).

- Itemization: gear inheriting stats from mods rather than fixed parameters (in the case of modable items) allows for a lot of customization and doesn't render your customizable gear obsolete.

- Crafting and re-engineering; to discover higher tiered versions of those recipes as well as having procs on individual crafting products adds a lot of depth and specialization to crafting.

- The extent of voice over content and story: biggest entertainment product ever made with this many lines of VO: no other mmorpg so far, not even movies, even comes close to that.

- Exploring for stat increases: datacrons & matrix cubes. And how some of them are hidden is simply brilliant world design.

- A space shooter minigame / alternative to fishing :P

- Vast amount of pve content; not only flashpoints (normal, hard mode and nightmare mode), bonus quests, dailies, EXTENSIVE individual class quest lines, operations but also hundreds of heroic quests; fun, mini dungeons intended for multiple players out in the worlds.

The last one might be the least outstanding compared to other games but there have been so many releases in the past years where the content simply wasn't enough. SWTOR is stepping up to that (even though it needs more and better fleshed out pvp content).

The biggest thing for me is the companions. I think the closest that comes to it is the mercenary in EQ1. While I tried to feel an affinity for them they were nothing but a piece of AI. Being able to romance and have sex with my companion and have her send me love notes and purple gifts in the mail in SWTOR is pretty awesome (Ashara). I like the crew skills system too, being able to craft, gather and make money while I'm in a warzone is the bomb.com

Also the alignment decisions and choices you make in game have a real impact on your story and the way people react to you. Almost in a Planescape: Torment type of way. never seen that before. Imagine consequences for decisions and personal responsibility in a video game.

I think the only thing is the crew skills system, where you send someone to do the work for you. Otherwise, I can't think of anything original in the game, but then I never expected them to do anything original, just polish the existing model a little more.

Original games don't come from AAA developers, they come from indie developers are usually terrible.

SWG PRE-CU FTW!

1/09/12 8:08:58 AM#27

I tell you what it has done actually,

Made peopls hate MMO's even more then they do now! Wow just wow is all I have to say. I hated SOE after SWG's demise but the hate thrown towards SWTOR is on another level. SOE messed up proper..but I dont feel BW or EA have. Yes its doesnt reinvent the wheel but myself and many others are enjoying it for what it is. Money well spent for me, but thats my opinion and doesnt mean you have to :)

Actually they nicked that straight from Torchlight (or possibly from somewhere else, but Torchlight is where I've seen it before)

I'm so glad they did!

MMOs get better by nicking the best ideas from other places and taking them to the next level (such as the interactives and companions as, has been pointed out above, have been done before in other games albeit in cruder forms), more than adding innovation, as innovative ideas can fall flat on their faces.

Did it ever claim it was innovative?  I don't recall, and I also don't think so.  If it did, then there's a point to this thread.  Because they didn't deliver.

Just to reinforce the point that Nykyrian is making.

Nyk is talking about the tired argument that SWTOR does "Fully Voiced Questing". Well, MOST modern MMORPGs do that now in their main storylines so it's nothing new. The only thing SWTOR did was simply "extend" how much voiced questing is done in their game. NOTHING NEW!

However Nykyrian, I'd like to point out that NO ONE has ever claimed that SWTOR does anything new. It's just a rehersed fully voiced version of WoW set in the StarWars universe. NOTHING new, and has NEVER been claimed to be new.

Additionally, everyone I know who was "Raving" about SWTOR has now quit. So I'm not sure how well SWTOR will do by June.

Sorry, I missed those MMOs that do full voice acting for their storylines all the way through....care to pass those on?

Yeah, was gonna post this myself. As a generally rule I hate themeparks because they are nothing more than doing random meaningless quests endlessly just so that you can start doing raids endlessly to get max gear for .... well no reason at all other than just to have it lol.

TOR is for me the first themepark MMO that actually included the RPG portion of the game. It's nice considering devs have been  treating RPG as just a few mechanics like level, stats and gear.

TOR for me is sadly the first true MMORPG.

Well crap, I hope you don t know alot of people that were "raving" about it. We re all doomed I guess. The game will still be Highly popular with or without the people "you know".

I don't know of any other MMORPG that places your character in voice over cinematics.  You could be naked and start the cinematic and be there naked talking to the NPCs, fighting some evil do-er, whatnot.  You are actually in the cinematic, not some other character pre-done for you that represents the race/class.  Cinematics in other games, such as WoW, are cut-scenes, you aren't participating in them, you are merely observing them like a fly on the wall.  You can choose to reply as some selfish money grabber or as a seeker of peace... which adds to the conversation or detracts from it.  So in essence, unlike other voice overs and cut scenes, the content you see and hear varies depending on what you choose to click.

Instead of running around looking for reasons to bash a game right and left, why not try to find a game you like and play it.  I know being a hater is 100% free because of sites like this that encourage it for profit, but really, you're contributing zero to the conversation by starting flame wars.  But then again, the rest of us are playing our games and having fun, so 99% of whatever is even posted on MMORPG never even see the light of day outside of the haters... and this is a place where haters concregate, because they can.  I for one have lost any resoect I have for this website and see it for what it is... a waste of time.

What many others have said.

Also, they provide ingame incentives for using a security key/phone app.  I don't know of any other game that does this.

Ugh, I hate how people think story = rpg.  Doom has a story, doesn't make it an RPG.  The story in SWOTOR pulls me by the ear through a world.  The story is the very thing that keeps me from playing a role, because it removes choice and sends me flying to my next "story" mission.

The only roleplaying part of SWOTOR is the moral choice system, which I loved for my first "by the book jedi" because every one of my choices built light side points, unlocking gear for me, I got to play a role.  My second jedi who I wanted to be "good natured and not held back by the facist jedi order" however was completely gibbed as every time I encouraged emotion I got dark side points, and every time I wasn't an ass to someone I got light side points, and thus I will never unlock any gear that requires light or dark side teirs, because they cancel each other out.

Wonderful, So I only get to play 2 roles (jedi angle or complete jerk) if I want access to what everyone else has access to, because someone thought It would be a good idea to make your force alignment another grind, like the stupid social points.

TOR is not an RPG, it is an interactive movie.  Fun? yeah sometimes.  Conducive to roleplaying? not at all.

Everything creates huge amounts of negativity on the internet, that's what the internet is for: Negativity, porn and lolcats.

Power without perception is spiritually useless and of no true value

1/09/12 8:45:07 AM#39

Another one of these stupid damn posts

I have one- Social points, Tor is the first mmo that you actually get something out of playing with friends besides faster leveling and XP, with social points you and your friends get points that can be applied to getting things from a vendor in the game. What does this mean, it means that the game actually does something that an mmorpg has not done in a long time. Encourage grouping, its also fun to see how people will influence the story with their choices. I had everyone laughing in a few dungeon runs with my choices because of my man whore of a Smuggler/Gunslinger who hits on everything movin.

Now I will be the first to acknowledge some of the bonehead things that this game does not have, but i will also acknowledge some of the good things it does have and if you played the Esseles you would know this already and know that NO game has ever done a dungeon like that before.

Also another thing it did right, using your skills to be able to navigate dungeons, a guy with splicers can turn back on the dead robots in a dungeon, or he can shut down defenses to make it an easier run, other skills like this can be used as well. Name one mmo where the guy with said skill x actually changes the way you progress through a dungeon by having a certain skill.

For lamens terms, imagine playing a game like Diablo and one of the members in your party has the skill mapmaking, and before you go out into a certain area your friend with mapmaking already has a map of said layout in this new area that none of you have been to before. Imagine how that changes things,. Its the same thing here.

Another thing Story I have never played an mmo that made people besides the rpers give a damn about thair characters more, and please provide the ones that do because I have been playing since the first EQ. No mmo has ever made people care about their characters more than TOR. Not one.

Now stop these damn posts already.

Any mmo worth its salt should be like a good prostitute when it comes to its game world- One hell of a faker, and a damn good shaker!
