Nothing has changed, other than the number of people playing now is less than what it was back when you were playing before.

I'm thinking of coming back too !...RL situations are holding me back from playing any mmo for now. If I had time to play an mmo it would be Vanguard at this time in history.  Everything now is real crap including SWTOR with it's play 5 minutes watch a movie for 5 minutes style, yet people are eating this crap up !

I would play Vanguard no matter how large the population is, it would not matter to me. Why ? because no one knows how to USE THE TOOLS GIVEN TO THEM !!!!!!

Wrong :

Spam chat for players. This is stupid, it rarely works for anyyyyy mmo. Many don't watch the chat as they are playing, others don't know what your talking about when you name something specific in what your trying to do.  Add to this that most have a short term agenda, and don't like to break away from what they are doing.

Guilds.  Bull crap, 200 players 25 Guilds. Now what kind of population of players would you expect to find at your level in any single Guild ?....Sure join one, but don't expect roses !

Right :

Use the Social panel.  This is how you find friends.  This is how you find groups.  THIS WORKS FOR EVERY MMO. Yet, no one ever ever uses it, every mmo has it, but people ignore it.  Back in the Vanilla WoW days was the only time you did not need it.

How ? Click on Social panel, type the level range you are looking for....Whammm...You have everyone playing the game at your level range.  IMPORTANT, Ask nicely if you can help them with their stuff.  YES, THEIR STUFF.  Go to them, don't be selfish with your own agenda, play with them, even if you don't have their quest ( does it always have to be about you ).  Play, make a friend, chat some. Now you have a friend !....Add him to your friends list....Work off a friends list instead of a Guild !

So now you playing an mmo, filled with nice friends !!!

Theres quite a large number of guilds out there, and it seems that after new year, there is a new stack of people coming in who level up new characters (either as new players or as new alts).

Did you ever think that the reason no one uses a social panel is because it's antithetical to how people actually communicate? That most people are probably wired for more direct communication and that people who are advertising groups are sort of priming the pump.

I would much rather someone put out feelers for a group and if I'm interested I respond over someone contacting me out of the blue.

It's not "spamming chat" it's advertising the availability for a group. Those who are interested will be looking at the chat for these groups and those who are not won't.

I disagree with your assessment. Heck, last night in SWToR people were advertising for groups and lo and behold, people were responding.

What might be a better solution is just a standard LFG channel for people who are looking for others. This way general isn't used. But usually people advertise in general because they don't think people look at LFG channels. Having an online gm would help with this.

QFT

I simply will not spam random people with group queries via tells. Making inquiries over channels is perfectly acceptable, I find groups this way all the time.

Err ... what ? Using the social panel followed by /tell is pretty much the most direct of all communications.

Think about it.

Someone says "I'm looking for group for x". A person is interested and they say "yes".

or

A person looks up the social panel, finds people and sends tells. Some may be looking for a group and some may not. That then put the onus on the person playing to either make sure he/she has taken any flags off themselves if they dont' want a group or in some games you have to actually make yourself anonymous. Problem there is that if a someone is just browsing the "who's on" you won't show up.

I"ve had many people contact me from browsing the "who's on".

IN addition, the person who is being asked for the group, if using some sort fo social panel might only be interested in a certain type of group.

Now they have to make sure any notes that are associated with their name are changed or they have to fit whatever they are willing to do in whateer space is given.

Sometimes a person might be on the fence and they are just logging in to chill. they could very well be prompted to join a group if they see someone asking in chat.

I know several times I"ve seen people looking for a group and they've seemed nice and I've just decided "what the heck".

Over me being contacted by some stranger while I"m trying to do something. And if I'm in the middle of another conversation or in the middle of a fight i now am distracted until I can finish up.

And of course the worse for me is being contacted out of the blue, i usually say no, and they keep at it trying to convince me.

I think for my taste I'd rather just look at chat and make my decision based on how the person comports themselves in chat.

I'm really surprised to read that from you. I see no rude side of asking someone via private message chat if he or she wants to form a group. Vanguard is MMORPG, all players are or should be acknowledged that they might meet, interact, i.e. possibly even chat with other players. And if they do not wish to participate in a group, how is a single line "Hi, are you up for this or that" in their chat window abusive? If they feel so intruded, they can always just make a separate window for PMs.

Twighlyte Song is still going strong as far as I know, I'm playing a bit on and off with them, and they have been around for a year or so I think. And even if im EU there is always someone around to play with. Seems to guild to join if you are jumping back in. Its a good mix of old and new players.

I think it mostly is where you are coming from.

For me It feels more natural for someone to advertise for a group and for those who are interested to express their interest.

If I'm in the middle of doing something then I don't want to be disturbed (for the most part) for grouping "for the sake of grouping". I'm supposed to be an extrovert but I'm also a New Englander so it seems that we like to be "extroverted" on our own terms.

Oh sure I'm always willing to help a person in need but the few times I've been pm'ed about a group that was just supposed to be a quick jaunt (me helping them) suddenly started to evolve into something larger and without my consent.

Essentially, my helping this one guy to kill some mobs starting turning into a much larger group to do all these quests. I just basically bowed out as soon as my partner started saying "hey I'm grabbing these guys to do x". Whereas someone who advertises what they really want to do gives me a better idea of who they are and what I can expect. It then feels more natural for me to start a conversation with them and say "hey, I'll help you out for this one thing". Someone pm's me and I suddenly have to start grilling them on what they want to do and what they need.

to That end, in LOTRO (and I've told this story before) some people advertised that they desperately needed help with Tomb of Elendil and I not only joined them but stayed with the core group of people for over 4.5 hours (we didnt' have a healer for most of it) so that these guys could finish the quest. PUG people kept joining and then quitting because it was hard. But we did it.

If there was a way to turn off pm's then I would do it when I didn't want to be bothered. Having another tab for pm's to channel into and then be ignored is not my way as I think it more rude to ignore a message.

In any case that's why I like people to advertise what they are doing and then if I'm in the mood I'll join.

I also can get a sense of someone from their advertising for a group. I generallyy will help people who seem like decent people to me. I absolutely avoid grouping with people who seem like asses or who seem selfish. Someone pm'ing me out of the blue and me not knowing them, gives me nothing to go on about them. I then have to resort to the aformentioned grilling. Me seeing their personality in chat gives me much more to go on.

It's important to note that I'm always available for guild mates as I come from the old Lineage 2 idea that your guild is your family and you should be willing to cross the map for them on a moment's notice.

but Thillian, if I'm ever in Vanguard and you see me and need help you have carte blance to ask if you are willing to do so. I'll help you for as long as the quest takes, even if we die a lot.

There was a decent amount of people (Twylight Song) on last night and pretty late at that.

Yes.  Do this and you will really enjoy Vanguard. You will barely notice a population problem.

A few months back, I had at least 10 people on my friends list close to my level at any given time. It's very important to be nice, start a conversation, explain how you found them, and your just looking for friends. Vanguartd is a duo or more game, most everyone is looking for friends here.

A little example, I was getting a group for Kreggers End ( levels 13-19 ). First rule find a Tank first, I was a healer. Sure enough, I had a Tank is less than 5 min using the social panel.  She told me, I'll never get a full group. I sead give me 10 more min., and sure enough full group is less than 10 min. I DID THIS WITH EVERY DUNGEON UP INTO THE 40S, USING THE SOCIAL PANEL !!!

Rude !!!!.......Bull crap !!!!!....Be nice, your intentions have to be good. Put others before yourself " Have you ever played an mmo that way ". Well very few do, everyone is for them selfs.

I had morning friends, evening friends, weekend friends. I would get /tells from them even before my game would even load. Am I great ?....No, I even kind of sucked, but just really good intentions !!!!!

Twighlyte Song   is a good guild, definitely join it. I did. But you know what, Often people in the guild did not see my advertisement.

1) Find a tank first. Use the social panel.

2) Ask in open guild chat second.

3) IM everyone using the social panel.

People will be so impressed at how fast you can get groups they will add you as friends. EVEN IF YOU SUCK !!!

I usually ignore direct tells to me.  Advertise in chat like everyone does in every other MMO.  Ever walk into a store and have that employee run over and pester you or ask if you need anything?  Yeah, I go into a store knowing what I want and when I need something I'll go to the employee.  It's just how I am wired.  Can't stand being sent tells from complete strangers.  UNLESS, the player is standing right next to me, because at that point I can assume he is probably doing something similar to myself and they usually are.

Well you can do it this way, then two weeks you can come back and say Vanguard is dead, and I have no one to play with.

Or

You can come back and say that you have 10 active players on your friends list, and WoW am I having fun !

"WoW" means World of Warcraft.

From context I assume you wanted to write "Whow"

I almost always ignore tells for teams because they are nearly always thinly disguised pleas of "come help me do XXX" rather than genuine team requests. I get so tired of stopping what I am doing to go help them (and it's always me helping them, never the other way around. Not once has one of these people ever asked me what I needed help with) only to have them say "thanks" and leave the team the second we are done with whatever quest they were having a problem with. I don't mind helping people if they ask (assuming I am not really busy ofc) but a request for help and a request to team are two different things.

Well I don't play selfish as most do in mmo's.  I'm not saying I watch the chat and play batman and go running to everyone's aid, infact I ignore most of this stuf like everyone else.

But what I will do is find someone using the social panel, and say " Hay can I play with you ?, I found you using the in game tools and I'm looking for someone to play with ". In Vanguard this works 99% of the time. Even if I don't have their quest I made a friend. Do this ten times make ten friends :)

How many times I came here to see the hundreds of players complaining, no one to play with..... I feel bad for them. Like most every mmo players, they are doing the same stupid shit everyone else is doing. such as :

- watching the chat, thinking they will get the once in a life time player that is doing the same thing they are doing.

- spaming chat, LFM Kreggers End.....Half the people dont even know what that is !!

- Do you think walking up to someone at the auction house is gonna yield a group ?

- Thinking that joining a Guild will yield a large player base for your level.

All the above does not work, and never did.

Are you new to Vanguard ? Do you like to group and Dungeons ? Don't have a clue what your doing ?...Well let me help.

First play the Trial Isle, best way to learn and get the best equipment for up to level 10. Don't expect to really group here as everyone is learning or working fast to get a new toon off the island.

One you get off the island, it's best to call Veskal's Exchange your home on the island of Thrstra.  It's the social hub of the game.

At around level 15 or so search out the town of Three Rivers.  Close to their is a place called Thelmwars Shield, pick up most all the dungeon quest for Kreggers End their, Then search the area for the entrance to Kreggers End, and play around near the entrance get to know the area.  Becuae next your gonna find your first group EVEN IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOUR DOING !

Now...Open up your Social panel and click on defensive then type 14-19 then click search. Ask every tank if they would like to do Kregers end. I'm sure you will get at least one. Do the same for a healer and a few dps. explaining to everyone that messages you back, what it is, and what you are doing.  Then have everyone meet in Three Rivers....Lead everyone to the entrance, thats all your responsible for, and have fun !!!

Now you just made a group full of friends to add to your list, and you had only played Vanguard a few days :)

These are my thoughts exactly.

Right down to employees running over to me in a store! I think people prefer joining groups on their own terms as opposed to directly being confronted. Unless of course they are next to you. That gives a sense of an already shared experience and perhaps shared goals.

I'd much sooner offer my help to someone in the area, probably doing the same quest or just needing my help, over a "hey, let's group up because I want a group" request.
