I just think their whole approach to the game and the entire MMO genre was utterly wussified.  To quote the Joker -- I think their balls fell off.  They want a mama's boy MMO, that you could play with kids the age of Manakin from Episode I.

There seems to be absolutely no bite to this game.

i played wow for 6 yrs , i never once vistited a server forum. I dont see the need for them. I understand people want them. I just dont see why not having them is a big deal

Im not saying bioware can do no wrong,  i for think tor is alot of fun but has some flaws but wow has flaws after 7 yrs. I have never played a perfect game. 

That said all i care about is if a game is fun. i just dont see why u need a forum dedicated to a server, i even now when i visit tor forums i read the dev tracker, read the community blog, maybe check out a few posts, thats it.

That said bioware usually listens to there customers so if enough people want server forums eventually they will add  them.

Ill tell you what, Wows forums is the last place to look for how a forum should operate, I have a sour sour taste in my mouth from that POS forum, I never posted on it but it was so bad before I couldnt even read it without going into a rage fit.  Nope, if Tor's forums cant incorporate server forums well, then by all means spare us the pain and suffering by keeping them out that has plaqued Wows forums since I can remember.

The only reason I don't like this is due to guild recruitment. When I played WoW across the various servers I did throughout my account activity, I used the specific server forums quite a bit to locate the specific types of guilds I wanted to raid with. If they can come up with a solution other than lumping all guild recruitment posts into one forum, forcing users to endlessly bump topics and manage their threads, I'm all for it.

Server forums are great -- not on do they help establish communities and frienships, but they are great for trading cross-faction, trading in general, finding groups and so on. I'm not even going to touch on the myriad aspects of RP possible on RP servers.

 

Having a 3rd party site is so tacky... and potentially unsafe for the people that use their same e-mail/PW combo from the game.  I mean people were easily hacking into accounts through Trion's website; what will make it any harder for hackers to hack into moms', uncles', grandpa Joe's accounts when they have their SWTOR e-mail and SWTOR password of Lukerocks1964 ?

 

Not to mention the harrassment that can go on outside the game.

Ah, see... someone using some sense finally! Out of , lets say 1 mil theoretical subs, probably a full 25% of people (probably more but I am shooting low) will use their same info for their 3rd party fansite forum account that absolutely doesn't have the security EA is running on SWTOR. Insta-access for about 25% of the user base just because they are too lazy/greedy to pay a few more mods (don't really need 100 of them...sheesh) to host official boards for servers like virtually every other game ever in existence.

Poor time to strike out and 'blaze new MMO ground' Bioware/EA.

Just doing my part to make the internet a better place!

But yeah, that kind of forum system hosted on corporate servers is a bad idea - the best forums and communities for games spring up from user ran ones. For example, alot of the old Everquest forums communities are still kicking in one form or another.

Logic and common sense would dictate that it makes a lot more sense for the publisher to handle this, rather than expect the highly fragments player base to invest the time, money and resources into developing hundreds of seperate web sites, each devoted to a single server, then expecting players to be able to find said websites.

We pay a monthly subscription for a reason and that included some level of community support, which in the end is a good investment for the title, as well as a boon to players.

Yeah it's the same with SWG there are many private servers set-up to host the many communities that formed there (they can be a rather brutal lot). It's never pretty when they venture into public official forums. :p

I agree with Bioware. Resources for server forums could be better spent elsewhere. If players are actually concerned with having a community for their server, then let them have the responsibility that goes along with running the forums.

That they, or anyone, thinks that it doesn't benefit the publisher to facilitate community, then they are sadly mistaken. "Penny wise and pound foolish" is an apt metaphor here.

Well, that some people will defend even the most bone headed of decisions a developer they love makes is always worth a chuckle, at the very least. :)

Let's ingore the posts of Guild Recruitment, and Server Events, and corespondance between factions, and server inquiries, and just plain simple conversations on the server.

This is just another mistake on BW parts and they want to squash any negativity on the forums.  Whats sooooo hard with just having server forums and just let the servers do what they will with it?  Don't moderate it and just let it be a simple place for the realm to chit chat.  I don't see why they need to be anal retentive about it.

Forget about trying to find a guild on your server as the Guild Hall is a complete clusterfuck.

This game is already very player isolated and this just furthur does it.  Really don't even call it an MMO anymore...

Your first part makes a compelling argument for server forums. The second part is a compelling argument for moderation as those forums would devolve into a cess pool of discussion.

They are not being anal retentive, they are being a company that wants to have forums that are rated pg so that they can be viewed by a wider audience.

 

lol PG?  It's the damn internet, hell in-game is a whole crap load worse than any of what the server forums ever can do.  Also I would be betting game discussions would be taken place in general discussion forum grp.

Personally i would rather have the community controll the forums.

How they haven't explored this venue? I mean get some flame wars going on forums, ban forum account, ban origin account and ban swtor account -> more sales ;D Isn't that how EA does it?
