You know, I think this phenomenon is really just the "Revese halo effect" in action. In other words, we see one poor representative of the community and assume the whole thing must be terrible. I've had a few bad experiences as well, but by and large, folks on the game don't seem that bad. It's not fair to judge everyone as horrible because some idiot was spamming obscenities in a BG match. The only game I've played that honestly, truly, 100% had a terrible community was Heroes of Newerth. Are you team Azeroth, team Tyria, or team Jacob? |

All due respect but what kind of people did you think this game would bring in? If you looked at the forums at any point it would have shown the type to migrate here. Its not just WOW folks either as their are a ton of new folks to the genre playing. It is what it is though and you are correct in the fact community in all newer MMO's is a joke. |

On The Jekk Jekk Tarr server I can't remember seeing really any childish or rude chat messages. The server has a lot of older gamer guilds and lgbt friendly guilds. It's probably in the top 20 busy servers. Every server is not filled with the same types of people.
Actually, now after reading this, makes me wonder just how bad some of the other servers are. O______O
And is it me or is almost every sing post in the current forum activity about SWTOR? Did WoW, Aion, DCU, and GW2 all fall into the ocean? |

Its not that WoW specifically produces these idiots but rather that, because of the huge populations that more popular games obviously produce you end up with a greater number of idiots in a given channel. And since these idiots are both louder than normal people and encourage each other in these antics, the result is a type of force multiplier of stupidity. A virtual Lord of the Flies scenario. Where do these kids (and by kids I also mean adults that act with all the mental capacity of the socially stunted adolecent life they apparently never out grew) come from? They come from parents who don't bother to raise kids capable of normal social interaction. They come from parents who park their spawn in front of a TV or a computer and somehow hope that it will substitute for the more challenging activities of substantive interaction, caring, dicipline and interest in the lives of these little people. Now, masses of these uncivilized, bepimpled, neo-barbarians find their way onto and into our games and forums and what little civilization might have existed there gets overrun and razed to the ground by Chuck Norris and arrow to the knee jokes. The Law of Conservation of Stupidity: |

I don't know if it's a wow thing, but there's sometihng different about this community than what I was used to in SWG. Back when I played SWG, if I said something like "this grind is killing me! I'm so bored!", I remember people asking me if I wanted to do stuff with them, like go after some hard to kill mob, or PVP, or JTL--or offer up some suggestions to break the monotony. Whatever, you do, don't say anything like that in this game! Man I got some hateful comments because I said "I'm trying to enjoy this game, but I'm sooo booored"....which was how I felt standing at one of the outpost on Alderaan, looking at all the missions I had to complete. Usually when I feel that way, I start doing something else, like wandering around looking for imps, or send my companions on missions, or I'll try warzones, or even the ship missions...didn't feel like doing any of that--and I definitely didn't get any suggestions other than: "so quit already" "don't let the door hit you in the ass on your way out" "<insert some WoW troll comment I don't understand because I never played it>" "go jump off a cliff" "nobody cares, quit whining in general chat" etc... A few people just said something like "welcome to MMO games", and "take a break and go outside"--rather reasonable reactions. No one said, or asked if I had tried anything they found to be fun or anything like that. Reading their reactions, I knew what had to be done...whatever MMOs once were, and I'm no expert--just going by my only other experience--the community aspect has changed...and in my opinion it's not for the better. I have a sneaking suspicion that reactions like that are meant to sabotage the genre, because no matter how great a game is, we eventually tire of doing the same things over and over, but if it's got a great community of positive and helpful individuals, people will stick around until there's something new to do. Alas, I'm out for now. |

I make an effort to talk to people and find like-minded people who I join up with. That way when I complain that I'm bored, they offer suggestions :) I know it's just a band aid solution to a bigger problem, but at least you can avoid some of the negativity.

Originally posted by gekkothegrey It's pretty much the same in most MMO's you go to. I have even found it in EQ2, albeit just in the general chat channels which I tend to avoid anyway.
Even in Guild Wars, where I find the community to be fantastic, there have been trolls and immature people. It just comes with the territory of the internet and being able to be anonymous. People can be anyone they want to and they can hide behind an anonymous user name with no fear of the consequences or reprecussions of being a jerk. I just roll with the punches and ignore those people. I also try to seek out like minded people and just stick in that niche.
Would I rather be able to enjoy myself out in public chat? Sure. And sometimes I do go into a public chat when I want to talk to people other than my guildies. Sometimes it's a great experience and people surprise me...sometimes, it's awful. But I've found out that a lot of the time, you get out of it what you put into it. If you are nice to people and try to just talk to them like they are human (even if they don't seem like it), a lot of time they will surprise you :)

I didn't encounter much asshattery during the beta weekend. I know live can be different. I did however encounter one extremely annoying player, but I'll refrain from describing what he was doing lest others do it.
Not too bad considering.

Originally posted by gekkothegrey I don't see how voice chat and a guild bank improve your perception of the community? That said, "WoW Community" is an old and wrong term. I think most of us have experienced by now that the so-called asshats aren't restricted to World of Warcraft, or even Themepark MMO's for that matter. Get over yourself and actually try to find the right people to play with, rather than depend on the developers to do the work for you (aka social features). 0___x "I'm afraid I can't do that, Dave". |
