come to think of it, are there any games with large scale instanced PVP? To me large scale is more than 100 players, I can't think of any instanced PVP games with that? |

The funny thing is that after DAoC, every other developer decided that instanced PvP should become more like random mini-games. I still havnt figure out why this has occured. An instance that you can log in when you choose and partake in a war vs other factions for control of a Castle or capture the flag. hmm.... its funny how I constantly hear people say " You dont want to play this mmo, you want to play an FPS". The irony of it is that WoW led the charge in taking the current MMO's of its time and turning them into FPS mini-game hybrids. |

not alot of large scale instanced pvp. Usually its smaller scale. Like in Leage of Legends or Guild Wars: Both are instanced to fight one team vs another team. You don't have alot of instances that are one raid group of like 24 vs 24, usually at most its 6 vs 6. I think the main reason is that there isn't alot of added benefit to having more people in the instance, and having more people makes it easier to get ganked.
Battlefield 2 and 3 are about large scale instanced PVP, but those games aren't a mmorpg but a FPS.. ========================== |

100% Small scale. Only here does your performance matter. Only here does your actions change the outcome of the game. For esports oriented players large scale battles are a no go. There are just too many variables to control, too many bad players to compensate for. In large scale fights you are a drone, a statistic. Your skill does not matter, your gear does not matter. Alll you have to do is stay with the pack and focus fire on any fool who leaves the enemy pack. This is not PvP, its just a chaos where all players independend of skill are given the illusion of being more important than they are (which makes it more popular for casual gamers). You want heroes? Professional PvPers? Clans you can follow as a fan? Replays of insane tactical moves and flashes of brilliance? Then you need a game format where the skill of a single player can win or lose the game. Look at starcraft / counter-strike. Thats what I want from my PvP in an MMO. --- |

I don't like instanced PvP large or small. I don't mind it being in a game for the e-sports people. |

Personally, I like a combination of both. |

I prefer non-instanced non-balanced (in terms of population) PVP .... if you add a third realm that would be icing on the cake. makes fights more dynamic. instead of knowing exactly how many are on the other side. |

I don't see the problem with MMORPGs having small scale PvP, because that is where teamwork thrives. However it is a shame that devs seem to have given up on a good large scale option, but I guess that's because it's incredibly hard to develop. Since most MMOs can't even have 100 players in an area, fighting, without players sufering immense amounts of lag and disconnects.
However I did find it interesting when someone quickly asked such a question, during Guild Wars 2's "Ask Me Anything" session with the devs. Us fans found out a lot of things about what the game is planning to achieve regarding large scale PvP and how the devs feel about it in general. |

I played WoW WIntergrasp (40 vs 40) and it can be fun. But the main problem is that nobody likes to be crushed like a bug when there's a tidal wave of enemies, also when you're in a tidal wave and crushing the enemy, you lose your sense of individual victory (which is always more satisfying). One idea that I have that could improve the fun in large scale PvP is that you could play as a "boss/god's avatar" for a few hours, killing enemies by the dozens, it would be fun for defenders as well, especially when their god's avatar enters the fray. This one and other ideas explained here: |

Not crazy about instances altogether but if I am going to play instanced battlegrounds that I will enjoy myself much more with smaller scale because the large scale battles rely too much on other players and its faster to find a good random team for the small scale. Guildwars Random Arena is my favorite in that game by faaaaarr! I have played it almost 20 minutes a day since it came out. The rest of the game sucks in comparison but I guess HA is okay and I enjoy AB if my girlfriend is playing with me because its so easy we seem to win it for our team lots. Small scale is more challenging since you are less likely to have your team carry you along and win for you. If you take a look at guildwars its a great example because the elite PVP spends most of their time there it seems and it has the poorest community because of all the noob calling and stuff like that. AB is totally not like that at all in comparison but nobody really watches you play nearly as much. It feels more epic to win in smaller scale too imo because if you are winning it for your team for the larger scal people dont even notice most of the time since they are too busy dying. NEWS FLASH! A bank was robbed the other day and a man opened fire on the customers being held hostage. One customer zig-zag sprinted until he found cover. When questioned later he explained that he was a hardcore Darkfall Online player and knew just what to do. |

Originally posted by MMOExposed I prefer large scale PvP like we use to have in UO. 100 vs. 100 was an average conflict between waring guilds.
If I have to choose between these two though it would have to be the one that actually requires a bit of skill and tactics. Small scale instanced PvP. Large scaled instanced PvP is the farthest thing from tactics and skill as you can get. Sure it's a lot more new player friendly and more friendly to those that don't deal with tactics or skilled opponents very well but lets face it it's mainly a bunch of players trying to Zerg each other. |

However none of them should take over a few hours of coding. |
