Skyrim's graphics is very sub-par compared to today standards - ie. Battlefield 3, Crysis 2.

Skyrim is using same engine used for Oblivion. Yes, it was heavily modified but most modification were made not on the graphics part. The graphics engine was tuned to provide great landscape views and along with amazingly well crafted game world it creates deep immersion and is good looking.

However, that's is not an actual technical graphical performance. When you study the graphics closely, you will find out that the game looks good only at distant views but is severely lacking in 'details' - low resolution textures, poor modeling, no depth, etc.

Did Skyrim devs got more punch for the buck? No, the graphics is just simple and narrow focused.

yea i dont get why people are getting all wet over skyrims graphics, i dont think they;re any special. you mentioned afew, but i just hate it how enchanted items dont even get a particle effect, they get that same terrible oblivion colour overlay with alittle shine added to it. thats and its so poorly coded. MEMORY LEAK!

In terms of graphics, Skyrim is pretty much top dog for the genre.  Comparing it to Battlefield 3 or Crysis is very misleading because those two games are designed to do a few very specific thing well, where as Skyrim is doing a lot of various things graphically.  It's like saying a truck is better than a van because it can haul trailers, without mentioning that a van can haul more people.

I am pretty sure it is the same engine, in the core. It was just so heavily modified they call it a 'brand new'. Some people were even reporting exactly same bugs/shortcomings as in Oblivion(could be same devs making same mistakes though..) I will look for a link to provide more info about it.

Witcher 2 blows away Skyrim graphics with ease. Skyrim is definitely NOT a top dog. Skyrim is good looking, yet the graphics is poor.

There is nothing misleading in comparing the graphics with Crysis 2 or BF3, you compare the technology used - those games use latest technology, Skyrim does not. Plain and simple.

Check other links in discussion below the article. They just changed the engine name for PR as in earlier articles they describe the engine as 'inspired by technology we have' and 'starting point - Fallout 3'.

With no doubt it is the same engine they used for older games. I am not implying that it's bad or anything, just pointing out facts and one reason for graphics limitations.

Witcher 2 has great graphics, but it's rendering entirely different stuff, just like Battlefield 3 and Crysis 2.  None of those engines can do what Skyrim does (just like Skyrim could never do what they do) because they are entirely different engines.  One example is in rendering distance.  Skyrims Creation Engine can't be matched by any of the games you mention.  Not because they are inferior, but because those games didn't require the vast render distances.  Skyrim does, and it does it very well.

Saying the graphics are "sub-par" really just makes you sound like a random hipster wannabe who's just trying to be contrarian for the sake of having a different opinion.

You were wrong with the engine, you are wrong on all other things but this you got right - Skyrim graphics is so poor it can't be matched with modern graphics engines.
