Last week, the rumor mill went into full swing with what some perceived as a slip up on the part of Funcom developers in saying that The Secret World's open beta would start in December 2011. Contrary to these reports, Funcom has categorically stated that the open beta will not begin until after the start of 2012.

Open beta will not be initiated before Christmas, but will be a part of our strategy next year prior to our April 2012 launch.

Funcom has not yet made any official announcements regarding the business model or price points for The Secret World. This is still being discussed and evaluated internally, and we will make an official announcement when this has been finalized.

Try... they said they would try to have open beta before Christmas but it could easily be 2012, they also said they didn't have a date to commit to. Basically people heard what they wanted to hear and got all excited over nothing.

Well, as much as I'd love to give this game a try, I must admit that it's good news, considering the state the game is in currently.

Agreed,they never confirmed it.

You might even be able to speculatively write that there may be no open beta for Secret World from Funcom till 2013.

More like no open beta ever, no way Funcom will make a MMO thats not total garbage.

They'll probably just do the 1 week open beta right before launch or whatever it was with AoC again.

And you know the state of the game how?

If there will be an open beta at all then it definitely is several months off. Just consider how many people are still left that they promised closed beta access to but still haven't let in.

on another note, why would anyone think they would start any beta phase so close to the launch of SWTOR?  quite frankly i'm lookin forward to this more than i am star wars.  i hope to see as many people in beta as possible.(considering i even get in of course...) i say smart move on postponing.

They would want to get people to choose to participate in the beta rather than buy and sub to SWTOR.  If the game were ready, there's no doubt that they'd be doing it.

And what games do they have now that are total garbage? Have you even played AoC? AO? And was it before or after they fixed the launch issues? Both are solid games the had rough starts. No one remember the rough starts Ultima Online and Everquest had, or the hiccups that even WoE had.

Plus you're not taking into account it's a completely different dev team than either of those games. Funcom self-publishes, but they don't have everyone working on every game.
