Then wait until the NDA is removed or until retail release when people can tell how their machines run it. An $800 build will probably run it well. A $500 build probably  wont.

Half-way decent PSU  $60

Cheap case $30

Decent MB $120 / Cheap MB $60

Decent CPU $200 / Cheap CPU $150

8GB ram $80 / 4 gb ram $40

< 1TB HDD $100

Cheap DVD $20

Decent GPU $200 / Inexpensive GPU $150

64 bit OS $100 / 32 bit OS $100

$910.00 / $690

Because the OP didnt state if he had an OS or not, and because you kind of need it.

Read an article on Destructoid earlier today concerning 3 PC builds under $1000 that would run Skyrim.  Based on the specs, and having played the SW:TOR beta, the 2nd and 3rd builds would run SW:TOR well and are in your price range{not on max, but high at least!}.  The 1st build would probably run it decently, but not as well as you'd probably like, so stay clear of that one.

Do take a look at them, and remember you can switch out parts if you want too...

If you can play WOW with 50 FPS minimum then you can play SWTOR. It wont need a powerful PC.

You know OSses are free all over the internet right? if he wants to pay fine...but with so many people dying everyday from hunger better grab those 100 bucks and give them to who really needs them...

If you can play wow with max settings, shadows at minimum with 30+ constant fps then ur fine dont worry

I know there is a section here, but if you want some serious help not only deciding on what parts to use for your build but also how to build it, then your best bet is to head on over to  www.maximumpc.com/forum

Help me Buy/Help me build is the section you want.

The process of picking out parts, ordering and tracking the shipment--as well as the building is a lot of fun.

Enjoy :)

I'd rather keep my current and future industry certifications. They are worth a whole lot more than a lousy OS install

GPU- radion 6870 180$   or 6950 2gb 265$

CPU- 2500k http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115072(future proof as well) 219$

the AMD phenom II x4 965 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103727 is nice (100$$ cheaper 130$) but pound for pound will not out muscle the 2500k or last as long for higher tier performance.

You could however, get the Phenom IIx4 and get the radion 6950 2gb GPU instead, or rather than the GPU upgrade grab a small SSD for your OS and a few games.

Motherboard depends if you will Crissfire or SLI later on, with that budget I would assume no. you can get a fine one for ~100$$ Make sure it is compatible. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157253 this is a dandy for your situation. 119$

Coolmaster HAF 922 is a decent Midsize tower case. 89$

I would shoot for 8gb of ram (4gb x2) anything over 1600mhz is a waste really http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231314  46$

PSU - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151088GPU 129$

roughly 950$$ You will also need a nice heatsink ect. maybe another 50$$ depends

All of these are just suggestions to give an idea of what you should be looking at. This set-up I would assume could run it on high easy. I would strongly suggest a SSD though.

roughly 950$$ You will also need a nice heatsink ect. maybe another 50$$ depends

If you want a pretty generic computer that a lot of people have but will run SWTOR with greap performance it will look similar to the post above me or ill just clarify some...

Make sure you grab a good certified PSU first, get a inexpensive AMD Phenom II X4 CPU (Under $200), grab 4GB or 8GBs RAM (Both can be found under $50) and pick up a 6850 or 6870. Both can be easily found for under $200 brand new and will do the job just perfectly fine. You should be able to run Max settings at decent FPS such as 30-40+ and if you lower like the shadows and GPU intensive settings just a little, youll be capping 60FPS.

Hope this helped, it was just straight forward info. If you want more in depth lmk.

So are you telling the OP to go steal a copy of Windows, or to go grab a copy of Linux and pray Wine will run SWTOR at release? Because neither sounds like a particularly good suggestion.

I tend to agree here with the CPU suggestion. Try as I might, I couldn't fit reasonable components into an $800 budget with a core i5, even scaling the CPU back to a 6850. After shipping and OS things just didn't fit in.

With a Phenom II X4 based system, you could do something like this:

As an aside, I'm suddenly seeing really good reviews in Newegg of Asrock motherboards (as came up in another thread). For $15 less than what I was finding from Asus and MSI, it made things fit in more comfortably, and has a nice feature set. I was even able to get the GPU up to a 6950.

I'm sure better deals can be found on some of this, and some components could be toned down a notch for a cheaper build (go to a 6870 if all you're doing is running TOR, and nothing else; that'll shave off some money). It's a rough sketch though.

Also, note how expensive hard drives are right now. No telling when they'll come down, so I just tried to fit in something on the very low end of price that could still fit a semi-decent amount of data (the 160GB drives really weren't much cheaper).

The Critical Hit Pretzel!

11/05/11 11:51:10 AM#14

Specific specs are needed. Graphic wise, the game doesn't seem to be very demanding (its graphics are meh) but it doesn't nessisarily mean it won't be demanding either. Its best to wait for specifics to be released to judge. Your best bet right now would be to simply to shoot for the $800 mark to best ensure you get the most bang for your buck so to speak with performance. Its not a very 'accurate' way of making a system, but my point is being that you will want to spend more rather then less to ensure a system that runs the game.

I'd stay away from radeon or ati anything for videocards, to many issues with games, and you'll need to constantly install special patches and crap just to get half the games that come out to run half-properly on a ati card. Problem with ATI cards is while the hardware is excellent, the drivers are some of the worst you can get. To put it in perspective, its like having a Formula 1 race car body, but having some 100 hp no-name piece of crap engine inside it that makes it move...barely. But if you don't mind needing all these special things to make ati work with games properly, be my guest, otherwise i'd spring for a nvidia card insted, since pretty much everything runs flawlessly on it compared to ati cards.

Before you call me a nvidia fanboy, I used to love ati cards, till I replaced my ati card with a geforce 8800, ever since then I never touched a ati card again, since I never had any of the performance/feature issues in any games, even future ones, compared to all the problems my ati card used to give me, with needing special patches to run this game and that game on a ati card.

Its a bit rare that this happens now a days but it still does happen with ati cards. I do wonder if the fan made ati drivers still get made, they tend to be better than the offical ones in many cases.

for 600 bucks I got a i5-2310, 8gb ram, 1.5tb hdd, and a geforce 240gt 1gb, or well the vid card that came with it was a lesser ati card i believe i repped it with my nvidia. Its a gateway though but I have never had any issues with a gateway pc. Would have prefered to order parts but due to it being a gift purchaise I couldn't wait for parts to be shipped, since the one buying it was going back home halfway across the country in less than a week. With my luck something would have arrived defective.

Graphically (and actually gameplay wise too since its just bascally just "yet another wow clone") swtor is nothing special, it just looks like your run of the mill x360 game, maybe a little lower graphically. Shouldn't need a high end system to play it. However we don't know how optimized the engine is. A poorly coded graphics engine can massivly increase the system req's.

Being a pessimist is a win-win pattern of thinking. If you're a pessimist (I'll admit that I am!) you're either:

A. Proven right (if something bad happens)

or

B. Pleasantly surprised (if something good happens)

Either way, you can't lose! Try it out sometime!

This hasn't been true for a long, long time, if it ever was. In 2007, Nvidia drivers were responsible for more than twice as many Windows Vista crashes as Ati drivers, almost a full 30%, as I recall. Besides, on a more anecdotal note I never had problems with my Radeon X800 Pro, not in any game until SM3.0 support became necessary. On the other hand, I could easily list half a dozen Nvidia-specific errors I ran into on my Geforce 8800, often game-breaking issues (issues that all magically went away when I got my Radeon HD 4870), but what happened years ago is neither here nor there anyways.

These days, both companies have small issues here or there, but otherwise good drivers, and both have frequent releases on a similar release schedule to keep those drivers up to date. Nvidia and AMD are both more or less equivalent here.

This idea that AMD drivers are somehow a mess whole Nvidia drivers are the Second Coming, and will do your dishes for you, is little more than an urban myth these days.

There's a decent chance that the optical drive is the only sensible part in the whole system.  The video card you got certainly isn't.

Nvidia and AMD both have good drivers.  ATI hasn't existed as an independent company for several years now.

For the original poster:  are you able to assemble your own computer from parts, or do you need to hire someone else to do it for you?
