It certainly looks given the amount of interest this game is getting that its possible a huge number of people who currently play an mmo are going to give it up to play StarWarsTOR . So assuming it is a great game and its something you many end up wanting to play for a long time what game you currently subscribe to will you be giving up ? or maybe you have the time and can afford to subscribe to multiple mmos . This is a hyperthetical thread aimed at seeing which game could be potentially be hit hardest by TOR for people intending to play it (so please don't post saying none if you have no intention of buying TOR ).

Don't expect great artwork from a coder. It just doesn't happen. |

None. I'm sort of in between games at the moment... mostly spending my time working. Currently in development Wizards and Champions (formerly ActionMMORPG) |

The title of this thread is grammatically flawed. It's you're, not your. Just saying.
I personally won't be dropping any games. I'm patiently waiting for SWTOR to come out. |

I frankly only have time for one MMO, and I will get the best. If TOR is the best I will give up all other MMOs, but I frankly needs to try it, TSW and GW2 (possibly TERA as well) before I decide which one I will keep. I can't decide which game to play before trying them, can I? Right now does it sounds like it will be GW2 I play, but that might change when I get my hands on these games. :) |

I did think however I was clear that the thread was hyperthetical and that it is about those the potential amount of people that could leave their current mmo if it turns out to be a great game with longevity . I think maybe you misunderstood the nature of my opening statement . I did try and make it as clear as possible . |

Originally posted by Loke666 It is hyperthetical and pertains to the assumption that TOR will be the game you want to play . I used StarWars because its release is only a few months away and has huge interest in it . GW2 doesn't require a sub so it makes it less likly people will give up a sub to thier current mmo for it and TSW is more likly to be a niche game that attracts a smaller audiance and Tera as far as I know still has no release window . |

See this is why I dont like the sub model much anymore. I always feel like I do have to give up, well, pretty much every other game in existence or Im wasting my sub fee playing something else.

Originally posted by OkhamsRazor Yeah, and in that case as I said I will be giving up on all other games. I will try it in the open beta (or the free trial if something messes up), if I like it I will play it but I will try the other games as well and if I like any of those better I will change. But right now do I play Guildwars, if TOR is better then I will change from it if that answers your question. |

Originally posted by Corehaven I know how you feel there .I'm quite enjoying Rift at the moment but thats the game I would be giving up if TOR turns out to be something amazing . I wouldn't have the time to play two games at once so it would be a waste of money for me to play two at the the same time that I paid a regular monthly sub for . |

Currently playing LOTRO, and will give that up when TOR comes out. When GW2 comes out, I'll probably buy that and mess around with it just to give it a shot, but I doubt that will hold my interest for too long. It will most likely just be a diversion from time to time. |

The game of real life. For about a month. Then back to normal programming! He who keeps his cool best wins. |

Won't have to give anything up!
LOTRO is paid for until next June (I'll re-evaluate then, but at $8 per month I'll most likely just keep it)
Just left WoW in September (Don't hate the game - just after 7 years, I"m ...tired? of it)
Since I don't play games 'obsessively' I have time for whatever games I want to have time for ;P |

Originally posted by Corehaven +1 Don't expect people to agree with you, though. Most MMO players have shown themselves to be chumps who will defend their broken systems to the end (eg. Subscription model, generic raid-raid-raid endgame, grinding, trinity class system).
On topic: I won't be playing SWTOR. That being said, I can answered your hypOthetical question. I am guessing that games like RIFT will be the hardest hit. "Never argue with a fool; onlookers may not be able to tell the difference." I need to take this advice more. |

Originally posted by empyros I give a thumbs up to this, but it's hard to break precedent. New systems are also hard to get accustomed to, and people are more willing to spend 15 a month to raid repetitive, dull content than spend much less yearly in an in-game store or something similar. I also believe that the people who desire to play generic style games will stick with it until the end. Therefore, I don't believe these games will be largely affected by SWTOR's release. RIFT may lose some players, but not enough to make a noticeable impact on their community. |

Originally posted by empyros Give me a fucking break. Subscription users are chumps because they like to pay a flat, no hassle fee once a month, rather than being advertised or forced to spend money on consumables, or other miscellaneous bullshit, to actually compete or play a game to the fullest extent? I like subscriptions because they allow me to play games unhindered, and I'm fine with paying monthly for that. The people who are chumps are buying items or cosmetics via microtransactions, either in their subscription or F2P's. Grinding, carrot-sticking, raid based endgame: these are all things that have become standardized in MMO's, as much as it may displease me. There are other games that offer differences, but if you're playing MMO's, you're probably going to run into this shit all the time, so get used to it, don't buy those products, or design your own game. Those are (realistically speaking) the only options available.
As for my vote, I won't be quitting any games when I subscribe to TOR. It may take time away from other titles, but I'll still be playing them. Originally posted by ruiner12 I honestly don't know what pricing model is truly better, or next-gen. Cash shops are the devil in that they are often P2W; of course, you end up spending more than needed and a lot of the stuff that could have been in-game to begin with is taken out only to resurface in the cash shop.
So obviously, cash shop isn't the best model either (?). As I said, I don't know what is the best solution.
But it is very apparent to me that there are many things that are absurdly broken about the MMO genre. For instance, doing something else (watching TV) while playing to alleviate boredom. WTF??? You're paying to play, and you're not even focusing on the game? I do that when I'm doing my CHORES, like folding my laundry or dusting. At least I don't have to pay $15 to fold my underwear. Or not being able to play a game you truly enjoy because all your friends are in another game.
Perhaps a lovechild between monthly sub model and cash shop? Sort of like AoC's, but the sub wouldn't be $15 and the cash shop would be more lenient in how purchases work. "Never argue with a fool; onlookers may not be able to tell the difference." I need to take this advice more. |

I feel like this thread is missing an option: "none." On this site, at least, I get the impression that no one really has a serious MMO they are playing atm (which is probably why there is so little to talk about outside of TOR atm). This thread could really just be chalked up to "which temporary MMO are you playing right now?" since it seems that most people are either playing / searching for an MMO to hold them over the wait, or aren't playing anything. Personally, I've been taking a break from MMOs. None of them really hold my interest anymore, and the sense of community that I used to get from the older games is almost entirely gone. Everything feels like a lobby game of some form another. Even the persistant ones. |
