WoW's ranking depends on the yardstick used. As some have mentioned, from business or polish perspectives, it is at the top of the heap. However from a creativity and freedom standpoint it could be reanked fairly low. Personally, you would have to pay me to play it again. The popular model of the virtual materialism grind may be good for perpetuating subscriptions but it makes for tedious and repetitive gameplay. |

The only reason why WoW has survived for so long has been it's adaptability and probably to a lesser extent, its ease of access(stone age system requirements). In fact that game adapted and changed so much that most "vanilla vets" couldn't recognise what it had become.
I remember, back when the so-called WoW killers were beating their chests showing off their Tome of Knowledge (WAR) and Character Trait(LOTRO) systems or for that matter the ability to enter battlegrounds from anywhere in the world (WAR again).
What did Blizzard do? within weeks they rolled out their Achievement system. Though nowhere near as detailed or good as the ones in WAR or LOTRO it was simple and effective enough. They also gave you the ability to join battlegrounds from anywhere in the world. Why innovate when you can just copy the best features from other games and laugh while they fail to keep pace and end up going down the free to play model while you're still reaping the 12-14 bucks a month.
In this regard i really applaud Bioware for not showing too much of their game.
I dunno about best MMO, but i can certainly say it is the most resilient one ever made, specially when u consider it still uses a pay to play model.
